Mental Telehealth Utilization Patterns Among High School Students from Racial and Ethnic Minority Backgrounds Affected by Violence and Substance Use.

BACKGROUND: Recent data show high school students from racial and ethnic minority (REM) backgrounds in the United States confront a twofold challenge, marked by the highest rates of firearm-related homicides since 1994 and increased youth substance use. The pandemic increased online and telehealth usage opportunities for at-risk REM youth. Therefore, this study investigated (1) the frequency and prevalence of co-occurring youth violence and substance use among REM adolescents, (2) racial/ethnic, age, and natal sex (as gender data was not collected) differences in patterns and trends in co-occu

Intentional traumatic brain injury in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Violence and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are two major public health concerns. This violence-related TBI, however, has not been studied in Canada and there is little literature on a profile of risk factors and injury severity regarding TBI because of self-inflicted/suicidal and assault/homicidal injury compared with unintentional TBI. METHODS: Cross-sectional study using the comprehensive data set (CDS) of Ontario trauma registry (OTR) from 1993 to 2001. SETTING: Data from a large trauma registry were used to assess demographic and injury-related characteristics, injury severity

Gender differences regarding barriers and motivators of HIV status disclosure among HIV-positive service users.

There are inconsistent findings about the relation between gender and HIV status disclosure. We conducted a facility-based crosssectional study, using qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, to explore gender differences in HIV-positive status disclosure among service users in south-west Ethiopia. Among 705 participants, an equal number of men and women (94.6% men v. 94.3%, women) indicated that they had disclosed their result to someone, and the majority (90.9% men v. 90.7% women) to their current main partner. 'It is customary to tell my partner everything' was the most frequen

Neuropsychological Impairment and Its Association with Violence Risk in Japanese Forensic Psychiatric Patients: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: In Japan, the legislation directing treatment of offenders with psychiatric disorders was enacted in 2005. Neuropsychological impairment is highly related to functional outcomes in patients with psychiatric disorders, and several studies have suggested an association between neuropsychological impairment and violent behaviors. However, there have been no studies of neuropsychological impairment in forensic patients covered by the Japanese legislation. This study is designed to examine the neuropsychological characteristics of forensic patients in comparison to healthy controls and

Are people who use methamphetamine at increased risk of physical violence? Results from a nationally representative sample.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The association between methamphetamine use and violent behaviour has received much attention in the research. The risk of violent victimisation among people who use methamphetamine is comparatively underexplored. People who use methamphetamine appear to be at a high risk of violent victimisation, but no studies have examined this association in a population-based representative survey. The aim of the current study was to examine the association between methamphetamine use and violent victimisation using a nationally representative sample of Australians. DESIGN: Observati

Adverse childhood experiences and mental health of sexual and gender minorities in Canada, USA, and Japan.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minorities have an increased risk for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and worsening mental health. However, cross-country research on varying levels of social acceptance remains limited. We compared the impact of sexual and gender minority status on ACEs and poor mental health between Canada, USA, and Japan. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 50,628 adults in 2022. Sexual and gender minority individuals included those identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or non-binary. Poor mental health was defined as experiencing not good mental he

Opposing Forced Displacement and Nuclear War is a Professional Obligation for Healthcare Workers and Public Health Advocates.

Forced displacement and the looming threat of nuclear conflict are now among the most potent, preventable drivers of global morbidity and mortality. This editorial argues that health professionals, bound by ethical mandates to promote and preserve life, bear a positive duty not only to treat the downstream consequences of war but to confront the policies that generate them. We outline the cascading public-health harms that accompany mass displacement, including communicable-disease outbreaks, interruption of chronic care, gender-based violence, and intergenerational trauma. We contend that sil…

A quasi-experimental effectiveness evaluation of a nurse-led Hospital Violence Intervention Programme in the United Kingdom using linked routine health and administrative data.

BACKGROUND: Emergency Department (ED) care of people injured in violence is increasingly seen as an opportunity to address patients' psychosocial vulnerabilities as well as their treatment. These vulnerabilities include alcohol, drug use, mental health and social vulnerabilities that are also associated with high levels of unplanned ED attendances for reasons other than violent injury. Since evidence of the effectiveness of interventions designed to reduce these risks is weak, we evaluated the impact of nurse-led Hospital Violence Intervention Programmes (HVIPs) across two sites in Wales, Unit

Evidence and knowledge gaps on the disease burden in sexual and gender minorities: a review of systematic reviews.

Sexual and gender minorities (SGM) include individuals with a wide range of sexual orientations, physical characteristics, and gender identities and expressions. Data suggest that people in this group face a significant and poorly understood set of additional health risks and bear a higher burden of some diseases compared to the general population. A large amount of data is available on HIV/AIDS, but far less on other health problems. In this review we aimed to synthesize the knowledge on the burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases, mental health conditions and violence experience

Creating opportunities through mentorship, parental involvement, and safe spaces (COMPASS) program: multi-country study protocol to protect girls from violence in humanitarian settings.

BACKGROUND: Violence against adolescent girls in humanitarian settings is of urgent concern given their additional vulnerabilities to violence and unique health and well-being needs that have largely been overlooked by the humanitarian community. In order to understand what works to prevent violence against adolescent girls, a multi-component curriculum-based safe spaces program (Creating Opportunities through Mentorship, Parental involvement and Safe Spaces - COMPASS) will be implemented and evaluated. The objectives of this multi-country study are to understand the feasibility, acceptability
