Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) may be synergistic selected during bio-treatment of chromium-containing wastewater and causing environmental risks through horizontal transfer. This research explored the impact of self-screening bacterium Acinetobacter sp. SL-1 on the treatment of chromium-containing wastewater under varying environmental conditions. The findings indicated that the optimal Cr(VI) removal conditions were an anaerobic environment, 30 °C temperature, 5 g/L waste molasses, 100 mg/L Cr(VI), pH = 7, and a reaction time of 168 h. Under these conditions, the removal of Cr(VI) reache

Acinetobacter baumannii is a major nosocomial pathogen worldwide and, specifically, in Latin America. Genomic epidemiology has been instrumental in determining the transmission dynamics of A. baumannii in many countries of the world, yet some Latin American countries have conducted no genomic epidemiology studies. Here, we conduct the first genomic epidemiology study about this pathogen in Paraguay. We sequenced 43 isolates from a big tertiary hospital in Paraguay collected from different wards in 2021 and 2022. Our genomic epidemiology analyses, including almost 200 genomes and considering th

Large cointegrate plasmids recruit genetic features of their parental plasmids and serve as important vectors in the spread of antibiotic resistance. They are now frequently found in clinical settings, raising the issue of how to limit their further transmission. Here, we conducted evolutionary research of a large blaNDM-positive cointegrate within Escherichia coli C600, and discovered that adaptive evolution of chromosome and plasmid jointly improved bacterial fitness, which was manifested as enhanced survival ability for in vivo and in vitro pairwise competition, biofilm formation, and gut c

Population genomic studies have the potential to address many unresolved questions about microbial pathogens by facilitating the identification of genes underlying ecologically important traits, such as novel virulence factors and adaptations to humans or other host species. Additionally, this framework improves estimations of population demography and evolutionary history to accurately reconstruct recent epidemics and identify the molecular and environmental factors that resulted in the outbreak. The Lyme disease bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, exemplifies the power and promise of the applic

The widespread dissemination of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) and its drug resistance transfer poses a global public health threat. While previous studies outlined CRKP's drug resistance mechanism, there is limited research on strategies inhibiting CRKP drug resistance spread. This study investigates the potential of Bifidobacterium longum (B. longum) FB1-1, a probiotic, in curbing the spread of drug resistance among CRKP by evaluating its cell-free supernatant (CFS) for antibacterial activity. Evaluating the inhibitory effect of FB1-1 CFS on CRKP drug resistance spread inv

Antibiotic resistance is a major public health concern due to its association with the loss of efficacy of antimicrobial therapies. Horizontal transfer events may play a significant role in the dissemination of resistant bacterial phenotypes, being mobilizable plasmids a well-known mechanism. In this study, we aimed to gain insights into the genetics underlying the development of antibiotic resistance by Piscirickettsia salmonis isolates, a bacterial fish pathogen and causative agent of salmonid piscirickettsiosis, and the main target of antibiotics used in Chilean salmon farming. We studied six species of lice from three of the four suborders of lice. These lice were infected with Wolbachia bacteria from supergroups A and F. This is the first report of an infection of supergroup F Wolbachia in lice. To date, Wolbachia from supergroup F have been found in filarial nematodes, Mansonella spp., and, rarely, in insects. We inferred the phylogeny of the Wolbachia from lice and representatives of all Wolbachia supergroups, with nucleotide sequences from the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rRNA). There was no evidence of congruence between the taxon of louse and the Wolb

Maize produces pre-formed secondary metabolites with antimicrobial and invertebrate anti-herbivory properties. Fusarium verticillioides, a mycotoxigenic maize pathogen, detoxifies the maize phytoanticipin 2-benzoxazolinone (BOA) through gene action of FvMBL1, which encodes a putative metallo-β-lactamase within the FDB1 gene cluster. This cluster is also present in other maize-colonizing fungi, including the pathogen Colletotrichum graminicola and, as reported here, the protective endophyte Sarocladium zeae, which exhibits antagonistic activity against mycotoxigenic fungi. The role of the FvMBL

The in situ polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results revealed that mouse type A and type C retroviral sequences were transmitted horizontally from the host to schistosomes. The signals to these retroviral sequences were observed in the nuclei of the mesenchymal and reproductive cells of 8-week Schistosoma japonicum. These signals were also detected in the nuclei of the mesenchymal and reproductive cells and in the cytoplasm of the tegumental tubercles of 24-week S. mansoni. Furthermore, mouse type A retroviral sequence was detected in the DNA extracted from the cercariae of both species. Howeve

Some Brucella spp. are important pathogens. According to the latest prokaryotic taxonomy, the Brucella genus consists of facultative intracellular parasitic Brucella species and extracellular opportunistic or environmental Brucella species. Intracellular Brucella species include classical and nonclassical types, with different species generally exhibiting host preferences. Some classical intracellular Brucella species can cause zoonotic brucellosis, including B. melitensis, B. abortus, B. suis, and B. canis. Extracellular Brucella species comprise opportunistic or environmental species which b

The heat-stable nucleoid structuring (H-NS, also referred to as histone-like nucleoid structuring) protein silences transcription of foreign genes in a variety of Gram-negative bacterial species. To take advantage of the products encoded in foreign genes, bacteria must overcome the silencing effects of H-NS. Because H-NS amounts are believed to remain constant, overcoming gene silencing has largely been ascribed to proteins that outcompete H-NS for binding to AT-rich foreign DNA. However, we report here that the facultative intracellular pathogen Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium decreas

Plasmids play a critical role in bacterial evolution and represent major drivers of the emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance. As primary mobile genetic elements (MGEs), plasmids facilitate the horizontal transfer of resistance determinants alongside genes associated with virulence, metabolic functions, and broader adaptive advantages. Recent studies have further highlighted the importance of conjugative plasmids, such as IncI1-like elements, in mediating the spread of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes and other clinically relevant traits across diverse bacterial pop

This study was performed to investigate the prevalence of rectal colonization with multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli in dogs hospitalized at veterinary hospitals in Korea and to assess the molecular epidemiologic traits of this organism. A total of 63 unique E. coli isolates obtained from the rectal swabs of hospitalized dogs were analyzed. Genes encoding CTX-M extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and AmpC enzymes were detected in 21 (33.3%) and 15 (23.8%) canine E. coli isolates, respectively. Twelve canine E. coli isolates harbored both the genes encoding the CTX-M and AmpC enzymes. Six

The generational effects of antibiotics are well-documented within the field of pharmacology, but their specific influence on the enhancement of plasmid-mediated conjugative transfer remains insufficiently understood, although plasmid-mediated conjugative transfer represents a crucial process for the horizontal dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). We pioneeringly investigate the effects of eight tetracyclines (TCs) across three generations on the conjugative transfer of RP4 plasmid, utilizing Escherichia coli strains isolated from typical wastewater. Results indicate that TCs e

UNLABELLED: The global dissemination of the carbapenem resistance gene blaOXA-23 is partly facilitated by plasmids, yet a comprehensive characterization of these vectors is lacking. This study analyzed the blaOXA-23-carrying plasmids selected from the National Center for Biotechnology Information RefSeq database to elucidate their general characteristics and genomic diversity. The blaOXA-23-carrying plasmids were predominantly hosted by Acinetobacter baumannii (94.06%), and their sizes varied widely, from 8.22 to 336.05 kb. Replicon typing revealed that the majority belonged to the RP Rep fami

Acinetobacter baumannii is a short gram-negative bacillus, notable for its intrinsic multidrug resistance and genomic plasticity, which facilitates the acquisition of additional resistance genes via mobile genetic elements. Due to its increasing carbapenem resistance, the World Health Organization has classified it as a critical priority pathogen. This study performed a comparative genomic analysis of 20 carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii clinical strains isolated from the Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez (CRAB-HIMFG), alongside 11 genomes from other Mexican strains. The pangenome was

We present the first complete genome sequence of an aviadenovirus Oriolus adenovirus (OrAdV) sequenced from the cloaca of a Oriolus chinensis (a passerine bird widely distributed in Asia), which was collected from an island off the east coast of China. Thirty-one protein coding genes were predicted in this 40425-bp-long genome. OrAdV genome is highly divergent and has only 57% average protein identity compared with other aviadenovirus genomes. Comparative genomic analysis indicates that this passerine virus is a new species of aviadenovirus. One unique thymidylate kinase gene was discovered in
