[Amblyopia treatment of unilateral and bilateral cataract with visual acuity result].

Treatment strategies of congenital cataract provide evidence of recent improvement in the visual prognosis. This trend is likely to be accounted for by a combination of improved management of amblyopia occurring in parallel with advances in surgical techniques, instrumentation, and materials. Compliance with occlusion is the factor most strongly associated with visual outcome: to support, to encourage, to comfort, to explain, to require (demand) to put in front of the responsibilities, here are the other missions of the therapist which are not less important than the surgical gesture. Progress

Profile of the prelinguistic intentional communicative behaviors of children with profound mental retardation.

The prelinguistic intentional communicative behaviors of 10 noninstitutionalized children with profound mental retardation were analyzed according to five profile parameters: communicative rate, communicative function, discourse structure, communicative means, and syllable shape. Subjects used a predominance of regulatory communicative functions, initiated discourse structure, gestural communicative means, and nontranscribable vocalizations/vocalizations without consonants. Findings were compared to previously reported data from children without mental retardation and institutionalized childre

Apraxia and Alzheimer's disease: review and perspectives.

Apraxia is one of the cognitive deficits that characterizes Alzheimer's disease. Despite its prevalence and relevance to diagnosing Alzheimer's disease, this topic has received little attention and is without comprehensive review. The review herein is aimed to fill this gap by first presenting an overview of the impairment caused in different clinical situations: pantomime of tool use, single tool use, real tool use, mechanical problem solving, function and manipulation knowledge tasks, and symbolic/meaningless gestures. On the basis of these results, we then propose alternative interpretation…

Social interaction experiences of adults with Moebius Syndrome: a focus group.

This focus group study explored the social interaction experiences and strategies of 12 adults with Moebius Syndrome, a rare congenital condition characterized by facial paralysis. Content analysis revealed five themes of social functioning: social engagement/disengagement; resilience/sensitivity; social support/stigma; being understood/misunderstood; and public awareness/lack of awareness of Moebius Syndrome. Participants used compensatory expressive strategies such as vocal tone, gestures, and humor. The combination of being unable to express oneself with the face, having a facial difference…

Opportunities to say 'yes': rare speech automatisms in a case of progressive nonfluent aphasia and apraxia.

We describe the investigation of speech automatisms in a man with progressive nonfluent aphasia and apraxias. Occurrence of the automatisms yes and right, were analysed across a range of speech tasks varying in length, propositionality, lexical and articulatory complexity, whether tasks engaged internal generation or external triggering and articulatory distortions, and while completing pantomimes/gestures. No differences were found in occurrence across most tasks but there was a significant interaction between automatism production and apraxic speech errors and during limb praxic tasks, sugge…

Perception of human motion.

Humans, being highly social creatures, rely heavily on the ability to perceive what others are doing and to infer from gestures and expressions what others may be intending to do. These perceptual skills are easily mastered by most, but not all, people, in large part because human action readily communicates intentions and feelings. In recent years, remarkable advances have been made in our understanding of the visual, motoric, and affective influences on perception of human action, as well as in the elucidation of the neural concomitants of perception of human action. This article reviews tho…

The focal dystonias of cranial-nerve innervated muscles are described. They include the ocular dystonia, blepharospasmus and other facial dystonias, mandibular dystonia, pharyngeal dystonia, spasmodic dysphonia, external laryngeal dystonia, spasmodic torticollis and lingual dystonia. They share similar clinical aspects such as the inadequate co-contraction of antagonistic muscles, dystonic overflow of muscle activity to muscles not normally involved, similar facilitating and inhibitory activities and various "antagonistic gestures". Genetic, imaging, neuroanatomic, physiologic and pharmacologi…

[Cerebral dysfunction and disorders of sexual behaviour (author's transl)].

The effects of epilepsy and focal brain lesions on sexual behaviour are described. Fits may be provoked by hypervenilation in epileptics during sexual activity, but also by orgasm and other sexual stimuli. Epileptic auras consisting of tactile genital sensations and sexual feelings, including orgasm, also occur. Post-ictal sexual automatisms consist of masturbation or other poorly structured activity, imitating the gestures of sexual intercourse. Focal brain lesions most commonly produce a reduction in sexual activity. However, frontal lobe lesions may produce disinhibition with inappropriate …

Space to Act, Think, and Create.

My career began with the exciting beginnings of cognitive psychology. It took me to memory, mental representations, categorization, spatial cognition, language, event cognition, stories, discourse, visualizations, comics, gesture, joint action, creativity, design, and more. On the way I enjoyed collaborations with friends and students in many areas and many countries. I am slowing down just as brain, AI, computational models, and big data are taking over the field, bringing new methods and new ways of thinking and, with that, new talent and inspired minds.

How reading works: considerations from prehistory to the present.

Reading is not a "natural" human ability. Because reading was invented only 6,000 years ago there cannot have developed any central nervous system structures specifically for the purpose of mediating reading. The anthropological concept of preadaptation, which states that the evolution of a structure for one purpose can enable that structure to perform another, must be true for reading. The research discussed in this article looks into the functions that preadapted the brain for reading. Findings suggest that the ancient skills of gestural comprehension and animal tracking were the underpinnin

Dramatic resolution of an immediate postoperative distortion of the circumflex artery during mitral valve surgery.

Injury or distortion of the circumflex coronary artery can occur during mitral valve surgery, due to its proximity to the mitral valve annulus. We present the case of a 72-year-old male patient with symptomatic mitral regurgitation, who underwent minimally invasive mitral valve surgery. The initial reparative gesture was complicated by intraoperative infarct due to a distortion of the circumflex artery (CX) caused by the rigidity of the ring used; the mainstay of the treatment was the removal of the previous device implanted in favor of a flexible one with restitutio ad integrum of the CX pate

Swallowing recovery following anterior tongue and floor of mouth surgery.

Videofluoroscopic and clinical data are presented for postsurgical recovery of tongue and hyoid activity during swallowing. Comparison is made to normal controls. Postsurgery, but prior to radiotherapy, both the lingual propulsive gesture and hyoid velocity were slower than normal. These features of the swallow had returned to the normal range following radiotherapy. The general sequencing of swallowing events, and the relationship of the end of the tongue propulsion to anterior hyoid motion were normal in those patients able to swallow. In this patient group, postsurgical radiotherapy did not

The two types of motor apraxia.

Ideomotor and ideational apraxia are higher motor disturbances at two different levels. In ideomotor apraxia the execution of simple and complex, meaningful and meaningless movements with the orofacial musculature and/or with the limbs, is impaired in a very distinct way, as has been described in detail. The parapraxic distortions of movements occur, when the movement is required out of context. The recognition of movements and gestures is intact. In ideational apraxia, in contrast, there is a disturbance in the conceptual organization of complex actions requiring the use of various objects. T…

Characteristics of upper limb movements in a sample of meningomyelocele children.

This study examined the movement characteristics of 41 children diagnosed at having meningomyelocele to whom 13 items from the Southern California Sensory Integration Test were administered. From factor analysis three factors of movement ability emerged. The first factor accounted for 40.1% of the variance and described a pattern representing both constructional and gestural apraxia. Factor II accounted for 16.2% of the variance and was indicative of bilateral coordination. The third factor accounted for 8.2% of the variance where it was observed that some subjects had ataxic-like movements wh

Cognitively aligned pattern learning: a knowledge-sensitive adaptive framework for multi-class pattern recognition in sEMG systems.

Multi-class surface electromyography (sEMG) gesture recognition systems frequently suffer from persistent and structured misclassification patterns, particularly among closely related gesture classes, which limit long-term stability and adaptability. To address this challenge, this paper introduces Cognitively Aligned Pattern Learning (CAPL), a hybrid adaptive model based on implementing Stacked One-versus-One (SOvO) multi-class decomposition with knowledge management and agile learning conceptualizations. CAPL explicitly represents recurring misclassification instances as structured knowledge

Simplifying Prediction of Intended Grasp Type: Accelerometry Performs Comparably to Combined EMG-Accelerometry in Individuals With and Without Amputation.

The adoption of active upper-limb prostheses with multiple degrees of freedom is largely lagging due to bulky designs and counterintuitive operation. Accurate gesture prediction with minimal sensors is key to enabling low-profile, user-friendly prosthetic devices. Wearable sensors, such as electromyography (EMG) and accelerometry (ACC) sensors, provide valuable signals for identifying patterns relating muscle activity and arm movement to specific gestures. This study investigates which sensor type (EMG or ACC) has the most valuable information to predict hand grasps and identifies the signal f…

Electromyography-informed musculoskeletal modeling provides new insight into hand tendon forces during tennis forehand.

Lateral epicondylitis, also known as tennis elbow, is a major health issue among tennis players. This musculo-skeletal disorder affects hand extensor tendons, results in substantial pain and impairments for sporting and everyday activities and requires several weeks of recovery. Unfortunately, prevention remains limited by the lack of data regarding biomechanical risk factors, especially because in vivo evaluation of hand tendon forces remains challenging. Electromyography-informed musculo-skeletal modeling is a noninvasive approach to provide physiological estimation of tendon forces based on
