INTRODUCTION: Nifedipine is a relatively new and increasingly used medication for treatment of all kinds of angina pectoris and arterial hypertension. The principal action of nifedipine is to inhibit the influx of extracellular calcium ions across the membranes of cardiac and vascular smooth muscle cells, without changing serum calcium concentration (1). Oral gingival epithelium (OGE), oral sulcular epithelium (OSE) and junctional epithelium (JE) were examined histochemically by using different lectins as markers for epithelial differentiation. The staining pattern of gingival epithelia was compared with that of the buccal and palatal epithelia. Binding of WGA had a uniform distribution in all the epithelia examined. A positive reaction was found in all the basal and spinous layers, but not in the cornified layer of the epithelia. BPA binding was seen in the lower spinous layer of OGE, OSE, buccal and palatal epithelia, and in most of the JE.

Frequency severity of gingival recessions was studied with Stahl and Morris indices. The results showed that the localization of gingival recession was more important on the mandible (37%) than on the maxillary (27.6%) it, also demonstrated the importance of various etiologies and particularly the association of trauma - tooth malposition (81%).

The hyperimmunoglobulin E recurrent-infection syndrome is considered a primary immunodeficiency syndrome characterized by recurrent staphylococcal infections both cutaneous and pulmonary, chronic dermatitis, otitis and sinusitis. Our case report can be interesting for the age of the patient (39 years old), for the absence of visceral lesion and for the development of a peculiar gingival hyperplasia. The review of literature has shown that this kind of gingivitis is not usual but not extraordinary.

Bilaminar procedures represent an evolution in the treatment of marginal tissue recessions. A connective tissue graft removed from the palate and over which a pedicle flap is sutured, is used in these procedures. A case of histoplasmosis presenting as ulcerated, hyperplastic gingiva and with no other systematic signs and symptoms is reported. The clinical presentation and the rarity of this condition led one of us to the differential diagnosis of a malignant lesion. The correct diagnosis was made after histological examination and tissue culture which yielded Histoplasma capsulatum. The patient was successfully treated with ketoconazole.

Cicatricial pemphigoid (CP) is found almost exclusively among middle-aged and elderly persons. This article describes a rare case of CP in a 14-year-old girl; it appeared on the mandibular anterior gingiva as desquamative gingivitis. Histologic examination of the lesions showed a subepithelial bulla. Immunofluorescence of gingival biopsy revealed immunoglobulin G, protein C3, and faint immunoglobulin A deposition along the basement membrane zone; results for normal skin were negative. A case of gingival fibromatosis with hypertrichosis is reported in a 3-year-old girl. Partial recurrence was observed 6 months after surgical treatment. Psychological benefits resulting from the cosmetic improvement may outweigh the probability of recurrences in this rare condition.

This study examined gingival crevicular polymorphonuclear leucocyte function in periodontosis patients. Cells were examined for viability, function and ultrastructure. Eighty percent or more of the cells in each sample were viable as assessed by the fluorescein diacetate technique, but the test organism, Candida guillermondiae, was not phagocytosed. The isolation and characterization of cyanogen bromide peptides derived from the human gingival collagen of patients with chronic periodontitis revealed the presence of both Type I and Type III collagens in this tissue.
