Factors influencing glove use in student nurses.

BACKGROUND: Gloves can prevent infection but their use among student nurses is inconsistent. AIM: To explore pre-registration student nurses' views of non-sterile glove use in clinical practice. METHOD: An online survey was conducted and focus groups carried out among third-year student nurses. RESULTS: The online survey showed that gloves were often worn inappropriately, while the focus groups revealed students conformed to their mentors' use of gloves. DISCUSSION: Student nurses' decisions on wearing gloves seem to be based on the culture of the clinical care environment rather than trus

Knowledge and Practices of Infection Control Among Healthcare Workers in Kazakhstan: Survey of Healthcare Workers From Accredited and Non-Accredited Hospitals.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are one of the main causes of morbidity and increased length of stay in hospitals. Infection prevention control is one of the main areas of accreditation standards that ensure the implementation of processes to prevent the spread of HAIs. We sought to determine the impact of implementing accreditation standards on knowledge and practices among health care workers that can prevent the spread of HAIs. METHODS: From May 2022 to July 2022, a cross-sectional anonymous survey was distributed to a total of 613 health care workers from 4

Factors associated with internal contamination of nurses by antineoplastic drugs based on biomonitoring data from a previous study.

Internal contamination of healthcare professionals by antineoplastic drugs (ADs) remains a current occupational health issue, particularly because these compounds are classified as dangerous to handle by the NIOSH. In order to improve preventive actions, a study of the factors associated with this internal contamination was conducted among nursing staff in health care institutions. This study is a statistical analysis of metadata from a cross-sectional observational study conducted among nurses in two French hospitals. The internal contamination of each nurse was assessed in a previous study a

Beyond Blast Injury: Occupational Hygiene, Safety, and Toxicology Considerations for Mixed-Metal and Energetic-Chemical Exposures to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Personnel.

Explosive ordnance (EO), including AXO (abandoned explosive ordnance), IEDs (improvised explosives devices), and UXO (unexploded ordnance), are widely recognised for their blast and fragmentation hazards, but they also represent a persistent and under-addressed source of occupational chemical exposure for explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) personnel. EOD core activities liberate mixed metals and energetic chemicals, resulting in exposures that are multi-route (inhalation of dusts and fumes, dermal loading amplified by sweat and glove occlusion, and ingestion via hand-to-mouth transfer during ea

Latex allergy: a model for therapy.

Allergy to natural rubber latex products emerged as an important clinical condition following an increase in the use of latex gloves for barrier protection in the early 1980s. In addition to latex glove users, other high-risk groups with different latex exposure include spina bifida patients and others with multiple surgical procedures. Subjects with fruit and vegetable allergy are also at risk due to cross-reactive allergens. Following the significant advances in the identification and characterization of common aeroallergens, latex allergy was well placed to become an excellent model of ther

Community eye-health and vision center guidelines during COVID-19 pandemic in India.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (COVID-19) pandemic has disrupted our society on an unprecedented scale since its inception in December 2019. As the health-care system is finally re-organizing to mitigate the impact of the pandemic, it was necessary to re-structure primary eye care (PEC) activities as well on the same lines. A consensus meeting was held with leading eye-care experts on 2nd May 2020 to prepare a roadmap for PEC in the days to come. Guidelines are needed for PEC activities like vision testing, refraction, optical dispensing, counseling, etc., Some of the acti

Potential risk of viral transmission from flying foxes to domestic animals and humans on the southern coast of West Java, Indonesia.

Flying foxes have been considered to be involved in the transmission of serious infectious diseases to humans. Using questionnaires, we aimed to determine the direct and/or indirect contacts of flying foxes in an Indonesian nature conservation area with domestic animals and humans living in the surrounding area. We surveyed 150 residents of 10 villages in West Java. Villages were classified into 3 groups: inside and/or within 1 km from the outer border of the conservation area and 1-5 km or 5-10 km away from the reserve's outer border. Data were collected by direct interview using a structured

[Occupational risks among public safety and security forces].

The present paper tries to identify the occupational risk factors (physical, chemical, biological, psychological), variable depending on jobs and tasks, to which the heterogeneous public safety/security workers are exposed. The fight against criminality and public order maintenance imply (sometimes fatal) traumatic risks, and expose to psychophysical and sensorial tiring, unfavourable macro- and microclimatic conditions, the risk of baropathy (air navigation, underwater activities), noise (generated by firearms and several other sources), vibrations and shakings (automatic weapons, transport v

Agrichemical safety practices on farms in the western Cape.

In order to study agrichemical safety practices in a rural farming area in the western Cape, an audit of 45 randomly sampled farms was performed over 3 months in 1992. A response rate of 87% was achieved, and the survey results suggest that approximately 9% of permanent and 14% of seasonal farm workers are employed in jobs with potential exposure to agrichemicals. While protective equipment was widely available, gloves and masks were seldom used, with little enforcement or commercial support from the suppliers of the equipment. Farm workers receive little training on pesticide safety, but inte

Bite by bite: Exposing hidden tick-borne disease risks among Nigeria's ruminant livestock workers.

Tick-borne diseases pose a significant global threat, with individuals in livestock-related occupations at high risk. This study assessed the risk factors for tick-borne viral diseases among pastoralist herdsmen and abattoir workers in Kwara State of Nigeria, a critical region for livestock movement. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 374 livestock workers (125 herdsmen; 249 abattoir workers), using structured questionnaires and observational assessments. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression. We identified a high prevalence of risky pra

Influence of filament loading technique on surrogate active pharmaceutical ingredient particle emissions during material extrusion 3D printing of tablets.

3D printing holds great promise to revolutionize pharmaceutical manufacturing, so for widespread clinical application, it is imperative to evaluate its safety and maximize its benefits. Herein, for the first time, particle emissions of the printing process of a model drug (fluorescein) were monitored in a test chamber to evaluate release. A filament extrusion-type 3D printer was used to make tablets from filaments loaded with fluorescein prepared by hot melt extrusion (HME) or diffusion (passive loading) techniques. Surface contamination of the printer was qualitatively documented. Average con

A multistate outbreak of sporotrichosis associated with sphagnum moss.

In the spring of 1988, the largest documented US outbreak of cutaneous sporotrichosis to date occurred, with 84 cases among persons from 15 states who were exposed to Wisconsin-grown sphagnum moss used in packing evergreen tree seedlings. In New York State, 13 cases occurred among 109 forestry workers. All 13 cases occurred among 76 workers who had handled evergreen seedlings and moss (attack rate = 17%). For those exposed to evergreens and moss, the risk of infection increased as worktime exposure to moss increased (attack rates: less than 10 hours, 8%; 10-19 hours, 12%; greater than 19 hours

Increase in occupational skin diseases of dental personnel.

Occupational diseases of dentists and dental nurses were compiled from the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases. The cases were recorded during 3 3-year observation periods, namely 1982-1984, 1986-1988, and 1992-1994 (i.e., 9 observation years). The relative risk of developing occupational allergic contact dermatitis in different occupations was calculated from the statistics of the years 1986-1991, and was expressed as the age-standardized rate ratio (SRR). During the 9 observation years, the majority of registered occupational diseases of dentists and dental nurses were skin diseases (2
