The multiple thermal decomposition channels of glycerol are calculated at the M06-2X-D3/6-311+G(d,p) level. In addition, the CAM-B3LYP and ωB97X-D functionals are used to show the functional influence on the free energy barrier. For the highly competitive primary channels, the DLPNO-CCSD(T)/CBS method is applied for the energy calculations. In North America, red blood cells (RBCs) are currently cryopreserved in a solution of 40% glycerol. While glycerol is not inherently toxic to humans, it must be removed prior to transfusion to prevent intravascular osmotic hemolysis. gamma-Glutamyl L-dopa, a renal pro-drug for dopamine, was administered to rats before and after injection of glycerol, and to a control group which received water in place of glycerol. A third group of rats was given glycerol but no gamma-glutamyl L-dopa.
