Rapid and highly selective dipchecking for cyanide ions in aqueous media.

This article reports a simple dipping method for the detection of cyanide ions in water and biological samples, such as blood, using chitosan-gold nanoparticle (CH-Au NP) composite films prepared using CH-Au NP colloids. Here, gold nanoparticles were generated by heating (to ~80 °C) a solution of chitosan and gold chloride, where chitosan plays the dual role of reducing and stabilizing agent. The well-known chemistry of leaching of gold by cyanide is exploited here to detect cyanide ions. The CH-Au films showed the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption, similar to the CH-Au col

Fabrication of gold nanodot arrays on a transparent substrate as a nanobioplatform for label-free visualization of living cells.

Two-dimensional gold (Au) nanodot arrays on a transparent substrate were fabricated for imaging of living cells. A nanoporous alumina mask with large-area coverage capability was prepared by a two-step chemical wet etching process after a second anodization. Highly ordered Au nanodot arrays were formed on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass using very thin nanoporous alumina of approximately 200 nm thickness as an evaporation mask. The large-area Au nanodot arrays on ITO glass were modified with RGD peptide (arginine; glycine; aspartic acid) containing a cysteine (Cys) residue and then used to immobi

An approach for fabricating self-assembled monolayer of gold nanoparticles on NH2(+) ion implantation modified indium tin oxide as the SERS-active substrate.

In this paper, an approach for fabricating an active surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate was adopted. This approach was based on the assembling of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) film on NH(2)(+) ion implantation modified indium tin oxide (NH(2)/ITO) substrate. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the surface morphology of the active SERS substrate, which showed that large quantities of AuNPs were coated on the substrate. Rhodamine 6G (R6G) was used as probe molecules for SERS experiments, showing that this new active substrate had sensitivity to SERS response.

Synthesis and characterization of thiosalicylic acid stabilized gold nanoparticles.

We report the synthesis of photoluminescent Au nanoparticles of varying sizes stabilized with a carboxylate group terminated aromatic thiol, thiosalicylic acid. The formation of Au nanoparticles and its stabilization with the thiol has been characterized by different spectroscopic and thermal methods. The water solubility, along with the low degree of aggregation and photoluminescence, enhances their suitability for biological applications. The photoluminescence may be due to charge transfer of the Au core with the stabilizing ligand.

Investigation of perfluorooctanoic acid induced DNA damage using electrogenerated chemiluminescence associated with charge transfer in DNA.

An electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL)-DNA sensor was designed and fabricated for the investigation of DNA damage by a potential environmental pollutant, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The ECL-DNA sensor consisted of a Au electrode that had a self-assembled monolayer of 15 base-pair double-stranded (ds) DNA oligonucleotides with covalently attached semiconductor CdSe quantum dots (QDs) at the distal end of the DNA. Characterization of the ECL-DNA sensor was conducted with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), ECL, and cyclic voltammetry befo

Biobar-coded gold nanoparticles and DNAzyme-based dual signal amplification strategy for ultrasensitive detection of protein by electrochemiluminescence.

A dual signal amplification strategy for electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor was designed based on biobar-coded gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and DNAzyme. CdSeTe@ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were chosen as the ECL signal probes. To verify the proposed ultrasensitive ECL aptasensor for biomolecules, we detected thrombin (Tb) as a proof-of-principle analyte. The hairpin DNA designed for the recognition of protein consists of two parts: the sequences of catalytical 8-17 DNAzyme and thrombin aptamer. Only in the presence of thrombin could the hairpin DNA be opened, followed by a recycling cleavage o

Patch test materials for mercury allergic contact dermatitis.

The objective of this study was to define adequate patch test materials to evaluate mercury allergic contact dermatitis. We applied 0.1% and 0.05% mercuric chloride, and 0.5% and 0.2% mercury in petrolatum to systemic eczematous contact-type dermatitis (baboon syndrome), and gold-dermatitis patients. All baboon-syndrome patients reacted not only to mercuric chloride but also to metallic mercury. In gold-dermatitis patients, significantly more patients reacted to mercuric chloride than to metallic mercury (21 of 35, 60%, versus 2 of 19, 10.5%, p < 0.0005). We speculated that sensitization to me

Analysis of the active site of the flavoprotein p-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase and some ideas with respect to its reaction mechanism.

The flavoprotein p-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase has been studied extensively by biochemical techniques by others and in our laboratory by X-ray crystallography. As a result of the latter investigations, well-refined crystal structures are known of the enzyme complexed (i) with its substrate p-hydroxybenzoate and (ii) with its reaction product 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate and (iii) the enzyme with reduced FAD. Knowledge of these structures and the availability of the three-dimensional structure of a model compound for the reactive flavin 4a-hydroperoxide intermediate has allowed a detailed analysis of

Perspectives for the pharmacological treatment of overactive bladder syndrome.

It has been found that antimuscarinic drugs, viewed as the "gold standard" in overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) treatment, have an unsatisfactory tolerance profile and limited clinical effectiveness. This fact has given a clear impetus to search for new options in OAB pharmacotherapy. The conducted pre-clinical trials have led to the development of new solutions for the treatment of OAB, which stand a good chance of being applied in clinical practice. The said compounds are characterised by higher receptor and organ specificity than currently used medications.

Label-free electrochemical aptasensor for sensitive and selective recognition of N6-Methyladenosine: Applicability in human urine.

The specific and accurate detection of ultra-low levels of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) in biological samples holds great potential in the clinical diagnosis of various cancer types and neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, a cost-effective, label-free electrochemical aptasensor was developed by self-assembling a thiol-modified aptamer onto the surface of a gold electrode (AuE). Target recognition was measured by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) using [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- redox probe. The biosensor demonstrated superior selectivity for m6A determ

Benchtop 2D multi-pinhole x-ray fluorescence imaging system using a high energy resolution pixelated cadmium zinc telluride detector.

BACKGROUND: X-ray fluorescence (XRF) imaging is a promising modality for quantitative molecular imaging that allows for the in vivo biodistribution detection of specific elements within biological systems. Despite its potential, challenges such as detection limit and scan time have hindered its widespread adoption in preclinical in vivo imaging. PURPOSE: This study aims to address these challenges by developing a benchtop 2D multi-pinhole XRF imaging system with an up-to-date cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detector system without tomographic reconstruction. METHODS: The benchtop 2D multi-pinho

A g-C3N4-stabilized Au nanozyme-based sensor with AI-powered "recognition-extraction-interpretation-report" for bias-minimized in-field monitoring of mercury ions.

Mercury ions (Hg2+) pose serious threats to human health owing to their toxicity and bioaccumulative properties, requiring timely and accurate in-field monitoring. Although laboratory-based analytical techniques can offer excellent detection performance, they need expensive instrumentation and professional operators, making them unsuitable for on-site self-detection; existing portable optical approaches still rely on manual operation, inevitably introducing underestimated biases arising from operators' subjectivity and hardly meeting the demand for reliable monitoring. To fill this gap, here w

Host-guest recognition-based fluorescent probe for ultrasensitive detection of free bilirubin using β-cyclodextrin-functionalized gold nanoclusters.

Bilirubin is a bile pigment widely present in the human body. At appropriate concentrations, it functions as an antioxidant, reduces obesity risk, and helps prevent cardiovascular diseases. However, excessive levels of unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) in the bloodstream can cross the blood-brain barrier, potentially causing kernicterus and irreversible neurological damage. Therefore, the accurate detection of bilirubin concentrations in human blood is of great significance for evaluating liver function and metabolic health status. Herein, we synthesized fluorescent gold nanocluster (AuNCs) probes

Expedient Access to Gold/Quantum-Dot Nanohybrids Mediated by Poly(ethylene Glycol) Ligands of Distinct Macromolecular Architecture.

We report a straightforward methodology to access structurally well-defined hybrid assemblies of plasmonic and excitonic nanoparticles (NPs). The developed strategy is based on the incorporation of quantum dots (QDs) coated with zinc-sulfide shells into poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) brushes at gold NP surfaces, without the necessity of incorporating specialized functional groups to drive the supracolloidal assembly. Based on control experiments involving PEGs with distinct polymeric architecture and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, we attribute the structure formation to attract

Photoelectrochemical detection of microRNAs based on target-triggered self-assembly of energy band position-matched CdS QDs and C3N4 nanosheets.

An ultrasensitive photochemical biosensor based on the target miRNA-triggered catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) reaction between Au nanoparticles (AuNPs)/C3N4 nanosheets and CdS quantum dots (QDs) was developed for the determination of miRNAs. Firstly, AuNPs/C3N4 nanosheets were immobilized onto a working glassy carbon electrode. Then, the hairpin probe 1 (H1) was loaded through Au-S bonding. Afterward, the unbound sites were blocked with 6-mercaptohexanol to avoid nonspecific adsorption. In the presence of the target miRNA, the CHA reaction between the H1 and hairpin probe 2-CdS QDs (H2-CdS QD
