BACKGROUND: Listeriosis is a severe food-borne infection caused by the Gram-positive rod, Listeria monocytogenes. Despite the low incidence (3-8 cases per million), Listeriosis has a case fatality rate of 20-30% as it occurs predominantly in immunocompromised individuals at extremes of age, diabetics and pregnant women. Listeriosis classically presents as a febrile gastroenteritis, isolated bacteremia, meningitis, or maternal-fetal infections. Focal bone and joint infection are rare and primarily involve orthopedic implant devices. Here, we present the first case of Listeria-associated spondyl

Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) remains one of the most important healthcare-associated infections of the last two decades. The pathogen is a Gram-positive, toxin-producing, anaerobic, rod-shaped and sporeforming bacterium; it is ubiquitous in the human environment. Transmission occurs by the fecal-oral route. The consequence of the action of bacterial toxins is initially a local inflammatory reaction, which then goes into systemic inflammation. Clinical presentation is varied; some patients are asymptomatic, in symptomatic form the main symptom is diarrhea of varying severity, which is

The Gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming, rod-shaped Clostridium perfringens is widely distributed in nature, especially in soil and the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals. C. perfringens causes clostridial myonecrosis (or gas gangrene), enteritis and enterotoxemia in humans and livestock by producing numerous extracellular toxins and enzymes. The toxin gene expression is regulated by a two-component regulatory system and regulatory RNA VirR/VirS-VR-RNA cascade. The VirR/VirS system was originally found in a type A strain, but a recent report showed that it is also important for t

Clostridial myositis is an acute, generally fatal toxemia that is considered to be rare in pet animals. The present report describes an unusual canine clostridial myositis that was diagnosed by a new multiplex-PCR (mPCR) designed for simultaneous identification of Clostridium sordellii, Clostridium septicum, Clostridium perfringens type A, Clostridium chauvoei, and Clostridium novyi type A. A ten-month-old male Rottweiler dog, that had displayed lameness and swelling of the left limb for 12 h, was admitted to a veterinary hospital. The animal was weak, dyspneic and hyperthermic, and a clinical

Bacillus anthracis, a gram-positive rod belonging to the Bacillus cereus group, has an extremely monomorphic genome, and presents high structural and physiological similarity with B. cereus and Bacillus thuringiensis. In this work, the new molecular methods for the identification and typing of B. anthracis developed in the last years, based on variable number tandem repeats or on genetic differences detected through sequencing, are described. The molecular aspects of traditional virulence factors: capsule, protective antigen, lethal factor and edema factor are described in depth, together with

Bacillus cereus is an aerobic or facultative anaerobic Gram-positive rod which is ubiquitous in the environment. The incidence of neonatal infections is very low. The clinical course is serious, usually life- threatening or permanently damaging the central nervous system. The immature immune system, subjected to invasive procedures, increases the morbidity risk in this age group, especially in extremely low birth weight infants. Diagnostic difficulties and insusceptibility to ''first- line'' antibiotics can delay effective therapy and increase the risk of its failure. We report a 730 g preterm

BACKGROUND: Actinomyces is a gram-positive rod, some of which organisms are anaerobic and others which are facultative anaerobes. Most species of Actinomvces cluster together, forming a structure resembling a fungal colony. The organism is an opportunistic pathogen most commonly seen in the oral cavity but may also infect the gastrointestinal tract, lungs and uterus. Actinomyces is also a part of the normal vaginal flora and can result in infection independent of intrauterine device (IUD) use. Abscesses and swelling are common at the site of the infection. The organisms are grossly apparent by

A strain isolated from pleural fluid of a patient with suppurative pleuritis (strain GTC 3021(T)) was characterized in terms of its phenotypic and biochemical features, cellular fatty acid profile and phylogenetic position based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the isolate was a member of the genus Prevotella. The isolate was related to Prevotella enoeca ATCC 51261(T) with about 92 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The strain was an obligately anaerobic, non-pigmenting, non-spore-forming, non-motile, Gram-negative rod. Although the phenotypic a

We report a bacterial isolate (Marseille isolate) recovered from the blood of a patient hospitalized in an intensive care unit, presenting with severe trauma, fever and mechanical ventilation. Colonies appeared at 37 degrees C on blood agar after 72 h incubation. This isolate was a strictly anaerobic, Gram-negative rod phenotypically related to other Prevotella species described to date: non-motile, catalase-negative, oxidase-positive, non-glucose fermenting, resistant to vancomycin and susceptible to kanamycin. Cells exhibited a trilamellar membrane under electron microscopy. The fatty acid m

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a small gram-positive rod bacterium that causes erysipelas in swine and a variety of diseases in other animals and humans. Although live-attenuated or bacterin vaccines are effective in protecting against erysipelas, the genetic construction of their active antigen has not been identified. To clarify the surface antigen(s) involved in protective and arthritic response, using monoclonal antibody I2A against the surface proteins of E. rhusiopathiae, we identified a protective antigen, which consists of 606 amino acids. Analysis of deletion derivatives of the gene,

Bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus are microaerophilic or aerotolerant anaerobic Gram-positive non-spore-forming rods. They are considered essential members of the human gut microbiome; however, recent studies have revealed that these microorganisms are less predominant in the gut microbiome than initially thought. Lactobacillus spp. is mainly known for its use as a probiotic in foods and supplements to prevent and treat specific issues such as infectious diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, and diabetes mellitus. However, Lactobacillus spp. may occasionally cause infections such as bacteremia

Nocardiosis, a rare infectious disease in dogs and cats, is caused by Gram-positive aerobic actinomycetes of the genus Nocardia. A one-year-old castrated male Great Dane was presented with clinical signs of an ulcerated nodule on the right ear, which was observed after two weeks of treatment with cyclosporine and prednisolone due to idiopathic hepatitis. Cytological examination revealed pyogranulomatous inflammatory cells and blanched filamentous rods. To detect infectious agents, serosanguinous discharge of the nodule was subjected to bacterial and fungal cultures. For phenotyping of the infe

The Gram-positive thin rods of a Bacillus species were identified and designated as Bacillus coagulans RK - 02 through the standard microbiological and biochemical characterization procedures, followed by data analysis and comparison with the characteristics given in Bergey's manual of systematic bacteriology. The culture was further characterized and confirmed as Bacillus coagulans by 16S rDNA sequence analysis wherein about 755 nucleotides of 16S rDNA was amplified and cloned in pGEM-T vector and subsequently sequenced. Sequence was blasted against the nr database of NCBI. Multiple alignment

Helicobacter pylori gastritis usually manifests as recurrent abdominal pain but is sometimes discovered upon evaluation for digestive tract bleeding with severe anemia. An 11-year-old who was not under medication and had no history of pain was admitted for isolated regenerative anemia (5.6 g/dl) due to digestive tract bleeding. Laboratory tests showed only low serum iron and ferritin levels. Endoscopy disclosed hemorrhagic inflammation of the duodenal cap and antritis with a hillocky appearance. The diagnosis of H. pylori infection was established on the basis of the finding of curved Gram-neg

Schaalia canis is a Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium originally isolated from the mucosa and skin of dogs. While it is a part of the normal canine oral flora, it has rarely been implicated in human disease, with only one prior case of cellulitis reported following a dog bite. Case Presentation: We present the case of a 57-year-old immunocompetent man who developed osteomyelitis of the left index finger following a delayed presentation after a dog bite. Despite initial conservative management with empirical oral antibiotics, the infection progressed, eventually requi
