Comparison of the Structural Characteristics and Functional Performances of Chitosan-Based Active Packaging Films Loaded with Three Varieties of Water Chestnut (Trapa bispinosa Roxb.) Shell Powder.

Water chestnut (Trapa bispinosa Roxb.) shell is an underutilized fruit processing by-product. Here, three varieties of water chestnut shells (green, red, and black) were pulverized into powder and individually loaded into a chitosan (CS)-based matrix to develop active packaging films via solvent casting. The structural characteristics, physical and functional properties, and minced pork preservation effects of water chestnut shell powder (WCSP)-loaded films were systematically compared with those of the CS film. Results showed that WCSP was rich in lignocellulose and polyphenols. Green and red

Infrared camouflage in leaf-sitting frogs: a cautionary tale on adaptive convergence.

Many cryptic green animals match leaves in invisible near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. This observation is an enduring puzzle because animals do not see NIR light, so NIR background matching is unlikely to contribute to visual camouflage. Two alternative explanations have been proposed-infrared camouflage (i.e. matching the temperature of the background) and thermoregulation-but neither hypothesis has been experimentally tested. To test these hypotheses, we developed bilayer coatings that mimicked the reflectivity of green leaf-sitting frogs with high NIR (HNIR) or low NIR (LNIR) reflectance. U

The use of diffuse laser photonic energy and indocyanine green photosensitiser as an adjunct to periodontal therapy.

Light-activated chemical therapy - generally known as photodynamic therapy (PDT) - has been developed within medicine, to allow the use of an applied agent (photosensitiser) that could be activated using laser photonic energy, leading to the destruction of target cellular structures. In clinical dentistry, PDT has been utilised within a wide scope of topical application in endodontic, periodontal and oral epithelial pathology where specifically, anti-bacterial action may prove useful. Underlying the complex and multi-factorial aetiology, periodontal disease remains of essentially-bacterial ori

Visible-Light-Induced Regioselective Radical Oxo-Amination of Alkenes with O2 as the Oxygen Source.

An efficient and novel visible-light-induced oxo-amination of terminal alkenes for the construction of α-amino ketones with easily accessible and green O2 as the oxygen source has been developed. The transformation possesses the advantages of operational simplicity, a broad substrate scope, high atom economy, and mild reaction conditions. The mechanistic studies reveal that an energy transfer process probably occurs in the initial stage, and the reaction proceeds via β-scission of the alkoxyl radical species.

Visible-Light-Induced Decarboxylative Cyclization/Hydrogenation Cascade Reaction to Access Phenanthridin-6-yl(aryl)methanol by an Electron Donor-Acceptor Complex.

A novel and efficient visible-light-induced decarboxylative cyclization/hydrogenation cascade reaction of α-oxocarboxylic acids and 2-isocyanobiaryls has been developed. Without the need of any external photosensitizer, oxidant, and reductant, this method offers a mild and green approach for the synthesis of diverse alcohols in moderate to good yields. A mechanism indicated that an electron donor-acceptor complex-driven decarboxylation, radical addition/cyclization, and in situ photochemical reduction of ketones to alcohols could be involved in the reaction.

Light-Enabled FeCl3-Catalyzed Deoxygenative Chlorination of Aryl Triflates under Mild Conditions.

Phenols are cheap, abundant bulk chemicals that serve as versatile starting materials for diverse organic transformations. Herein, we report a mild, visible-light-induced FeCl3-catalyzed protocol for converting aryl triflates to aryl chlorides using MgCl2 as an inexpensive and green chlorine source. The reaction proceeds without noble metals or additional photoredox catalysts, shows broad functional group tolerance, and delivers products in good to excellent yields. Notably, the method is air- and moisture-tolerant and readily scalable.

Synthesis and characterization of a new red-emitting Ca2+ indicator, calcium ruby.

Calcium Ruby m-Cl (X = H, Y = Cl) is a visible-light excited red-emitting calcium concentration ([Ca2+]) indicator dye (579/598 nm peak excitation/emission) with a side arm for conjugation via EDC or click chemistry. Its large molar extinction and high quantum yield rank it among the brightest long-wavelength Ca2+ indicators. Calcium Ruby is a promising alternative to existing dyes for imaging [Ca2+] in multicolor fluorescence applications or in the presence of yellow-green cellular autofluorescence.

Hand hygiene compliance in nursing home wards: The effects of feedback with lights on alcohol-based hand rub dispensers.

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene (HH) among health care workers (HCWs) is crucial in preventing infections in nursing homes. However, HH compliance (HHC) among HCWs remains low. This study aimed to investigate the effect of feedback lights on HCWs' HHC. METHODS: A 5-month interventional study was conducted in 3 wards in a nursing home in Denmark. During the intervention period, a green light with a smiley appeared on the alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) dispensers when HCWs used the ABHR, acknowledging HCWs for using the ABHR. HHC was monitored using an automatic HH monitoring system (AHHMS). RESULTS: …

Multiple-flash activation of the water-photolysis system in wheat leaves as observed by delayed emission.

The chloroplasts from wheat leaves greened under intermittent illuminations (1 ms in duration) at long intervals (5 min) are capable of photoreducing DCIP (2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol) with diphenylcarbazide as an electron donor but are incapable of photoreducing DCIP with water as the donor. On exposure of such intermittently illuminated leaves to flashes spaced at intervals of less than 10s, the delayed light emission from the leaves was greatly enhanced in parallel with the generation of Hill activity. The mechanism of this photoactivation was studied by following the changes of the delaye

Characterization of light lesion paradigms and optical coherence tomography as tools to study adult retina regeneration in zebrafish.

Light-induced lesions are a powerful tool to study the amazing ability of photoreceptors to regenerate in the adult zebrafish retina. However, the specificity of the lesion towards photoreceptors or regional differences within the retina are still incompletely understood. We therefore characterized the process of degeneration and regeneration in an established paradigm, using intense white light from a fluorescence lamp on swimming fish (diffuse light lesion). We also designed a new light lesion paradigm where light is focused through a microscope onto the retina of an immobilized fish (focuse

Highlighter: An optogenetic system for high-resolution gene expression control in plants.

Optogenetic actuators have revolutionized the resolution at which biological processes can be controlled. In plants, deployment of optogenetics is challenging due to the need for these light-responsive systems to function in the context of horticultural light environments. Furthermore, many available optogenetic actuators are based on plant photoreceptors that might crosstalk with endogenous signaling processes, while others depend on exogenously supplied cofactors. To overcome such challenges, we have developed Highlighter, a synthetic, light-gated gene expression system tailored for in plant

Melatonin Mediates Monochromatic Light-induced Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 Secretion of Chick Liver: Involvement of Membrane Receptors.

Monochromatic lights influenced the proliferation and differentiation of skeletal satellite cells in broilers by the enhancement of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) secretion. However, whether melatonin (MEL)-mediated monochromatic lights influenced the IGF-1 secretion remains unclear. Newly hatched broilers, including intact, sham operation and pinealectomy groups, were exposed to blue (BL), green (GL), red (RL) and white light (WL) from a light-emitting diode system for 14 days. The results showed that GL effectively promoted the secretion of MEL and IGF-1, the expression of proliferatin

Full solution-processed synthesis of all metal oxide-based tree-like heterostructures on fluorine-doped tin oxide for water splitting.

Well-ordered tree-like functional heterostructures, composed of the environmentally friendly oxides ZnO, TiO(2) , and CuO, on a fluorine-doped tin oxide substrate are realized by a practical, cost-effective, solution-processable strategy. The heterostructures are demonstrated to be an efficient light-harvesting medium in a photo-electrochemical cell to split water for hydrogen-gas generation, and the developed strategy provides a highly promising, cheap, green way to fabricate multifunctional hierarchically branched structures for many potential applications.

Rod thresholds in dominantly inherited juvenile optic atrophy.

Three members of a family with dominantly inherited juvenile optic atrophy with tritan type of colour vision deficiency all showed dysfunction of the rod mechanism tested with green light after 30 min of dark adaptation. Two subjects had typical optic atrophy, centrocaecal scotoma and lower than normal visual acuity. In 1 subject with good visual acuity of both eyes, no optic atrophy was observed, but there were, in this case, reduced peripheral parts of the standard visual fields.
