[Doping in sports].

Doping consists in the use of artificial means or substances with the unique aim of improving performance despite adverse effects on health. Amphetamines stimulate the central nervous system by increasing motivation and vigilance. Often consumed in association with analgesics, they increase the fatigue threshold during prolonged or repeated exercise. Addiction and dependency to these substances are extremely rapid. Side-effects include insomnia, exhaustion, violence and can lead to serious heart diseases. By enhancing capacity for intensive training, anabolic steroids improve strength, alertne

Steroid-protein interaction in human placenta.

Human placenta produces a large variety of bioactive substances with endocrine and neural competence: pituitary and gonadal hormones, hypothalamic-like releasing or inhibiting hormones, growth factors, cytokines and neuropeptides. The most recent findings indicate that locally produced hormones regulate the secretion of other placental hormones supporting a paracrine/autocrine regulation. In placental endocrinology, a particular relevance is played by steroid hormones. In fact, a specific gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) regulation of placental steroidog

Neuropeptide regulation of feeding in dogs.

Norepinephrine and four families of neuropeptides, namely, neuropeptide Y (NPY), opioid peptides, galanin, and growth hormone-releasing factor (GRH), have been shown to stimulate feeding after central administration. Because these studies were mainly done on laboratory rats, the present study was designed to ascertain the central stimulators of feeding in dogs. We have shown that porcine and human pancreatic polypeptides (PPs), when administered into the third cerebral ventricle (intracerebroventricularly), increased food and water intake of satiated animals but that the COOH-terminal fragment

On the role of calcium in indole-3-acetic acid movement and graviresponse in etiolated pea epicotyls.

To determine whether Ca2+ plays a special role in the early graviresponse of shoots, as has been reported for roots, we treated etiolated pea epicotyls with substances known to antagonize Ca2+ (La3+), to remove Ca2+ from the wall (spermidine, EGTA), to inhibit calmodulin mediated reactions (chlorpromazine), or to inhibit IAA transport (TIBA). We studied the effect of these substances on IAA and Ca2+ uptake into 7 mm long subapical 3rd internode etiolated pea epicotyl sections and pea leaf protoplasts, on pea epicotyl growth, and graviresponse and on lateral IAA redistribution during gravistimu

The Central Effects of Androgenic-anabolic Steroid Use.

: Millions of men use androgenic-anabolic steroids (AAS) to stimulate muscle growth and improve physical appearance. Although 1 out of 3 people who uses androgenic-anabolic steroids develops a steroid use disorder, the effects of the drugs on the central nervous system and the psyche are still not well understood. Although most addictive substances improve mood immediately after administration, AAS exert less pronounced euphoric effects. Instead, they are primarily taken for the delayed gratification of increased muscle mass. Withdrawal from AAS may lead to a range of somatic and psychiatric s

[Biological properties of the phosphate-mobilizing Bacillus subtilis strain IMV V-7023].

Biological characteristics of a new phosphate-mobilizing bacillus strain are reported. Species-level identification of the strain was performed according to morphological, cultural, and biochemical characteristics and the sequence of the 16S rRNA gene. The strain was identified as Bacillus subtilis IMV V-7023 and displayed a very high ability to mobilize phosphorus from its sparingly soluble inorganic and organic compounds and the capability of synthesizing biologically active substances; in addition, the strain essentially suppressed the growth of phytopathogenic bacteria, micromycetes, and a

Progression of chronic renal failure.

Chronic renal failure is characterized by a persistently abnormal glomerular filtration rate. The rate of progression varies substantially. Several morphologic features are prominent: fibrosis, loss of native renal cells, and infiltration by monocytes and/or macrophages. Mediators of the process include abnormal glomerular hemodynamics, hypoxia, proteinuria, hypertension, and several vasoactive substances (ie, cytokines and growth factors). Several predisposing host factors may also contribute to the process. Treatments to delay progression are aimed at treating the primary disease and at stri

[Results of bacteriologic and mycologic investigations of otitis media in dogs].

This study describes the bacteriological and mycological investigation of 212 ear swab samples of dogs with an otitis externa. 11 samples were sterile. Malassezia pachydermatis could be cultivated in 72.1% of all samples, in 21.9% of these cases in pure culture. In 27.9% of all samples only bacteria were found. Coagulase-positive haemolytic Staphylococcus and Malassezia pachydermatis were isolated together in 31.8% of all ear swab samples. Pseudomonas aeruginosa could be detected in 22.9%, haemolytic Streptococcus in 8.0%. The evaluation of antibiograms showed little resistance of staphylococc

Hormonal changes in hemodialysis.

When chronic renal failure becomes advanced, the serum or tissue levels and/or the functions of most hormones are altered because of several interplaying mechanisms involving synthesis, transport, accumulation of inhibitors, abnormality of target organ responsiveness, and impaired renal clearance. As regular dialysis treatment is performed, most of these uremic hormone abnormalities are not reversed, and some of them may even get worse. The main endocrine derangements can be grouped as sexual hormone dysfunction, thyroid abnormalities, growth retardation, hormone-related disorders of metabolis

A two-site solid phase enzyme immunoassay for rat epidermal growth factor.

A sensitive and simple two-site enzyme immunoassay was developed for rat epidermal growth factor (rEGF), which was purified from male rat submaxillary glands. This system is based on the sandwiching of the antigen between anti-rat EGF IgG antibody coated on a polystyrene bead and anti-rat EGF Fab' antibody-linked peroxidase, whose activity was stable at 4 degrees C for 6 months. In this system, the rat EGF was detectable at a concentration of 2 pg/tube. No interference was observed by addition of human plasma. There was no cross-reactivity with mouse EGF, human EGF, or other substances with si

Current concepts of somatomedin and other biologically related growth factors.

Since the discovery 20 years ago that the growth-promoting effects of somatotropin are mediated through a serum factor(s), research in this area has rapidly expanded. It is the purpose of this review to bring this area of scientific endeavor into perspective. The first part of this review will deal with aspects of total serum somatomedin activity and its biologic actions and measurements in health and disease. The last part of this review will summarize some of the physical and biologic characteristics of the recently purified "somatomedin-like" substances: somatomedin A, B, and C, NSILA-S (no

Exposure to the growth promoter tylosin elicits gut microbiota disruption and metabolic imbalance in mouse model.

The environmental risk associated with the usage of the antibiotic tylosin as an animal growth promoter (AGPs) needs to be assessed because such agents are used in abundance and contamination of the environment is common, yet their effects on the physiology and gut microbiota composition of animals and humans are poorly understood. In this work, we performed metagenomic analysis and revealed that tylosin significantly disrupted the gut microbiota structure of animals, reduced species diversity, and caused the increase in the relative abundance of Blautia (60.95%). [The life of human hair follicle revealed].

The human hair follicle is a unique appendage which results from epithelio-mesenchymal interactions initiated around the 3rd month of development. This appendage has a very complex structure, with a dermal compartment and an epithelial compartment. The dermal compartment comprises the connective tissue sheath and the dermal papilla, both of which are irrigated by microvessels. The epithelial compartment is made of highly replicating matrix cells giving rise to three concentrical domains, namely the outer root sheath, the inner root sheath and the hair shaft. The pigmentation unit, responsible

Patterns of protein expression in infectious meningitis: a cerebrospinal fluid protein array analysis.

Seventy-nine cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors were measured by protein array analysis in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with meningitis and controls. Several factors were found to be regulated, which have not been studied in the CNS before, e.g., macrophage inflammatory protein-1delta (CCL15) and neutrophil-activating peptide-2 (CXCL7). In pneumococcal meningitis, other new observations were an increase of macrophage migration inhibitory factor, monocyte chemoattractant protein-2 (CCL8), pulmonary and activation-regulated chemokine (CCL18), and macrophage inflammatory protein-3al

The effects of tissue sealants, platelet gels, and growth factors on wound healing.

The improved understanding of wound healing has resulted in the rapid expansion of tissue adhesives, platelet gels, and the use of growth factors. Tissue sealants have been used to close incisions, seal and secure skin flaps, as well as promote hemostasis. Platelet gels have multiple uses that take advantage of their inherent clot-forming ability as well as their potential to release growth factors. Recombinant platelet-derived growth factor has been studied extensively for the treatment of chronic dermal ulcers and shows promise in enhancing wound care. This article will address some recent a

Old, new and the newest concepts of inhibition of luteolysis during early pregnancy in pig.

In 1977 Bazer and Thatcher proposed that maternal recognition of pregnancy in the pig involves the secretion of PGF(2alpha) towards the uterine lumen (exocrine) rather than towards the uterine venous drainage (endocrine) as occurs in the non-pregnant pig during the mid to late stages of the estrous cycle. The retrograde transfer of PGF(2alpha) from the venous blood and uterine lymph into the uterus and the ability of the uterine vein and artery wall to accumulate PGF(2alpha) could constitute a part of putative mechanism of corpus luteum protection during early pregnancy. A luteotropic/anti-lut

Angiogenesis and chemokines in rheumatoid arthritis and other systemic inflammatory rheumatic diseases.

Angiogenesis, the formation of new vessels, is important in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other inflammatory diseases. Chemotactic cytokines termed chemokines mediate the ingress of leukocytes, including neutrophils and monocytes into the inflamed synovium. In this review, authors discuss the role of the most important angiogenic factors and angiogenesis inhibitors, as well as relevant chemokines and chemokine receptors involved in chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases. RA was chosen as a prototype to discuss these issues, as the majority of studies on the role of angioge

Cytokines, growth factors, and oxidative stress in HepG2 cells treated with ethanol, acetaldehyde, and LPS.

Inflammatory mediators, including cytokines, growth factors, and reactive oxygen species, are associated with the pathology of chronic liver disease. In the liver, cytokine and growth factor secretion are usually associated with nonparenchymal cells, particularly Kupffer cells. In the present studies, the effect of 24 and 72 h administration of ethanol (50 mM). acetaldehyde (175 microM), and LPS (1 microg/ml) were studied on the expression and secretion of TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, and TGF-beta3, lipid peroxidation damage and glutathion content in HepG2 cell cultures. Molecular mechanisms of vascular permeability in diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetes leads to a wide array of complications in humans, including kidney failure, vascular disease, peripheral nerve degeneration, and vision loss. Diabetic retinopathy causes blindness in more working-age people in the United States than any other disease and contributes greatly to blindness in the young and old as well. The increasing rate of diabetes occurring in our society can only bring about a further decrease in the visual health of this country unless new modalities are discovered to prevent and cure diabetic retinopathy. Breakdown of the blood-retinal barrier and the resultant vas

Corneal cell proteins and ocular surface pathology.

The cornea is a transparent and avascular tissue that functions as the major refractive structure for the eye. A wide variety of growth factors, chemokines, cytokines and their receptors are synthesized by corneal epithelial and stromal cells, and are found in tears. These molecules function in corneal wound healing and in inflammatory responses. Proteoglycans and glycoproteins are essential for normal corneal function, both at the air-epithelial interface and within the extracellular matrix. The ocular MUC mucins may play roles in forming the mucus layer of the tear film, in regulating tear f
