Electrocochleography (ECochG) was used to evaluate cochlear function in guinea pigs with experimentally induced endolymphatic hydrops (ELH) before and after osmotic dehydration with either glycerol or urea. We surgically induced ELH in the right ears of 9 guinea pigs, while the right ears of 6 guinea pigs received a sham operation. The left ears of the 15 animals constituted the normal group. Audiologic and histopathologic examinations were made after occlusion of the lateral semicircular canal in eight guinea pigs. The lateral semicircular canal was drilled out, and then the canal lumens were plugged with muscle pieces. Among nerve cells of vertebrates, the olfactory epithelia are uncommon in their capacity for cell turnover. Apoptosis is well known to play a key role in maintaining homeostasis in continuously renewing tissues. We examined whether true apoptosis occurred in the normal olfactory epithelia of healthy adult guinea pigs using nucleic acid labeling. Subsequently, apoptosis was recognized in olfactory nerve cells, indicating that apoptosis might play a role in turnover of the olfactory epithelium.

The effects of intravenous furosemide on the perilymphatic oxygen tension of the scala tympani (OT) in the guinea pig and the relationship between changes in OT and changes in auditory cortical-evoked responses were studied, as well as changes in cochlear morphology. Clinical studies have shown that plasma vasopressin level is significantly elevated in patients with Meniere's disease. Twenty-nine Simulium species were recorded in the Republic of Guinea. The geographical distribution of the blackfly species in its areas is shown in the paper. The most probable vector of Onchocerca volvulus are S. damnosum s. str and S. sirbanum which predominate in the landscapes of Sudan and Guinea savannas. We have developed a guinea pig model of iron overload toxicity. Animals were administered intraperitoneal iron dextran 3 times a week to achieve total body iron load of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 g Fe/kg body weight in less than 30 days. Seroepidemiological investigations in Guinea were carried out to estimate the areas of Lassa virus circulation. The recombinant protein of Lassa virus nucleocapsid was used as the antigen to analyse blood sera by ELISA.
