We describe the case of a patient with cutaneous diphtheria caused by toxigenic Corynebacterium ulcerans who developed a right hand flexor sheath infection and symptoms of sepsis such as fever, tachycardia, and elevated C-reactive protein, after contact with domestic cats and dogs, and a fox. We summarise the epidemiology, clinical presentation, microbiology, diagnosis, therapy, and public health aspects of this disease, with emphasis on improving recognition. In many European countries, C ulcerans has become the organism commonly associated with cutaneous diphtheria, usually seen as an import

A 58-year-old Japanese woman who was engaged in dairy farming presented with multiple subcutaneous nodules and abscesses on the dorsum of her left hand from 5 months ago. These had been unsuccessfully treated with oral itraconazole. The patient had a history of Sjögren syndrome and diabetes mellitus, for which she had been taking oral prednisolone for 10 years. Direct microscopy of a pus sample treated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) showed brownish-red branching hyphae. In fungal culture, black colonies covered with gray-white villi were formed. Slide culture showed conidiogenesis from an anne

Erythema multiforme (EM) is a serious cutaneous and/ or mucocutaneous disorder that typically develops within 10-14 days of exposure to an offending medication or infection and resolves within 4 weeks. Common offending agents include antibiotics, anticonvulsants, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, and various viral, fungal, and bacterial infections. Herpes simplex virus is a common cause of recurrent EM. Although this condition may be relatively benign in its minor form, EM major can lead to serious complications and even death. As such, it is imperative to find and remove the etiolog

The underlying genetic abnormalities of epidermolysis bullosa (EB) cause destabilization at the dermo-epidermal junction. Patients with EB characteristically are subject to blistering following relatively minor trauma (the Nikolsky sign), and suffer from ulcers and erosions in all areas subject to persistent or repeated friction, such as the hand. Hand deformities occur in most patients with dystrophic EB (DEB), and include adduction contractures of the first web space, pseudosyndactyly, and flexion contractures of the interphalangeal, metacarpophalangeal, and wrist joints. All structures in t

This report describes a case of primary cutaneous histoplasmosis in a 45-year-old male. The presentation consisted of an erythematous nodule on the back of the right hand, accompanied by nontender regional lymphadenomegaly that developed following local trauma that occurred during military training in a tunnel inhabited by bats. Histological examination of a biopsy specimen from the skin lesion showed granulomatous infiltrate, but did not show fungal elements. Culturing of this material, incubated in Sabouraud agar, showed growth of Histoplasma capsulatum. No evidence of systemic involvement o

The most common clinical presentations of hand eczema are atopic hand dermatitis, pompholyx, and contact dermatitis (irritant contact dermatitis [ICD], allergic contact dermatitis [ACD]). The diagnosis of hand dermatitis is determined by a review of the patient's medical history, a physical examination including other body sites as well as the hands, and a thorough overview of the patient's daily activities with emphasis on occupation and hobbies. Irritant contact dermatitis usually is diagnosed by the absence of a positive patch test result; however, patch testing is essential in confirming a

A patient with systemic lupus erythematosus who developed a distinctive nodular eruption demonstrating typical features of palisading granuloma is presented herein. A 60-year-old woman was admitted complaining of an elastic-hard, indurated nodule on the right dorsal aspect of the metacarpophalangeal joint of her third finger with a history of several years. She was successfully treated for her lupus nephritis with oral predonisolone. She had experienced erythema on her cheeks after sun exposure and polyarthralgia for a decade. Laboratory examination revealed positive results for antinuclear an

BACKGROUND: Atypical forms of pyoderma gangrenosum generally appear on the upper extremities; most frequently they are associated with myeloproliferative disorders, including osteomyelofibrosis. A response to systemic steroids is more pronounced than in classical form. Sometimes it may be the first sign of an underlying malignancy.
CASE REPORT: We reported a patient with atypical pyoderma gangrenosum developed during the course of a myeloid malignancy--osteomyelofibrosis. The lesions occurred after a minor trauma. Painful blistering plaques, with an elevated, bluish-gray border were located o

Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) are arboreal marsupials native to Australia that eat a specialized diet of almost exclusively eucalyptus leaves. Microbes in koala intestines are known to break down otherwise toxic compounds, such as tannins, in eucalyptus leaves. Infections by Chlamydia, obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens, are highly prevalent in koala populations. If animals with Chlamydia infections are received by wildlife hospitals, a range of antibiotics can be used to treat them. However, previous studies suggested that koalas can suffer adverse side effects during antibiotic tre

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is a complex cardiovascular disease. Effective management typically involves four main medications: angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blockers, beta-blockers, angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitors, and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, along with sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i). The primary objective of this article is to assess and identify the utilization of four-pillar regimen for HF managment and explore the characteristics of the patients being on the four-pillar regimen in Jordan.
