[Occupational health risk assessment of pneumoconiosis caused by dust exposure at 18 quarries in a given area of Hubei Province].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the occupational health risk level of pneumoconiosis caused by dust exposure in a given area of Hubei province. METHODS: From April 2021 to October 2021, 18 quarries were randomly selected in the areas where quarries were concentrated in Hubei Province to conduct on-site hygiene investigation and detection. A total of 384 workers were employed in the above quarries, and 293 workers were exposed to dust. The International Mining and Metals Commission's risk rating table method and occupational hazard risk index method were used to analyze the occupational health risk

Microbial characteristics of municipal solid waste compost: Occupational and public health risks from surface applied compost.

Land application of MSW compost promotes the soil fertility and productivity, but there is concern about its chemical and microbial quality. Although, current microbial indicators of MSW compost are generally considered to be protective of human health, the use of these indicators doesn't adequately represent the presence of pathogens that might be more resistant to inactivation during composting process. This work aims evaluation of the microbial characteristics of MSW compost and estimation of the health risks associated with exposure to pathogens of potential concern in MSW compost. Althoug

Non-High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease: The Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study.

AIMS: We aimed to investigate the association between non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) levels and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its subtypes. METHODS: In this contemporary cohort study, we analyzed the data of 63,814 Japanese employees aged ≥ 30 years, without known CVD in 2012 and who were followed up for up to 8 years. The non-HDL-C level was divided into 5 groups: <110, 110-129, 130-149, 150-169, and ≥ 170 mg/dL. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CVD an

Occupational Health and Safety Measures in Healthcare Settings during COVID-19: Strategies for Protecting Staff, Patients and Visitors.

The COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has profoundly impacted almost every aspect of healthcare systems worldwide, placing the health and safety of frontline healthcare workers at risk, and it still continues to remain an important public health challenge. Several hospitals have put in place strategies to manage space, staff, and supplies in order to continue to deliver optimum care to patients while at the same time protecting the health and safety of staff and patients. However, the emergence of the second and third waves of the virus with the influx of new cases continue to add an additional l

Clinical and occupational health management of healthcare workers living with chronic hepatitis B: UK policy and international comparisons.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a highly infectious bloodborne virus, which remains endemic in large geographic areas and represents a major global healthcare challenge. HBV transmission from healthcare workers, who perform exposure prone procedures (EPP), to patients is a recognized transmission risk, which varies widely globally. Although the risk is small in developed countries, it increases significantly in high-prevalent, low-resource countries, representing a major challenge to these healthcare systems and underlining the necessity for robust guidance to be in place. The HBV landscape has evo

Tuberculosis and Silicosis Burden in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Miners in a Large Occupational Health Outreach Programme in Zimbabwe.

Artisanal and small-scale miners (ASMs) labour under archaic working conditions and are exposed to high levels of silica dust. Exposure to silica dust has been associated with an increased risk of tuberculosis and silicosis. ASMs are highly mobile and operate in remote areas with near absent access to health services. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of tuberculosis, silicosis and silico-tuberculosis among ASMs in Zimbabwe. A cross-sectional study was conducted from 1 October to 31 January 2021 on a convenient sample of 514 self-selected ASMs. We report the results

Factors associated with knowledges and attitudes about measles and rubella immunization in a non-health care occupational setting in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: Elimination of measles and rubella has been achieved in several countries and some regions. After verified measles elimination, some countries have reported outbreaks among adults in occupational settings such as health care institution and school setting. Studies have reported that knowledge and attitude for measles and/or rubella are significantly associated with immunization uptake in adults, but few studies have been conducted in settings other than health care facilities and schools. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 134 office employees during a routine h

Addressing occupational stress among health staff in nongovernment controlled Northern Syria: Supporting resilience in a dangerous workplace.

INTRODUCTION: Syrian medical staff working in non-government controlled areas of Syria operate in situations that expose them to great personal danger, while they must often face the same challenges as the people they help. Supporting the wellbeing of these staff is crucial to the operation of health services for internally displaced Syrians given the large-scale destruction of healthcare infrastructure. METHODS: Findings from a staffcare programme designed by a grassroots Syrian psychosocial organisation in Southern Turkey and implemented in a medical nongovernment organisation in Idlib in N

High-ACE Low Wage Workers: Occupational Health Nursing Research and Praxis Through a Trauma-Informed Lens.

Individuals with a history of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) disproportionately have poor mental and physical health outcomes. These experiences affect individuals across the life span extending beyond health with deleterious impact on work-related outcomes. Low-wage workers are particularly at risk. Social service and health organizations are becoming aware of the extent to which the populations they serve have been affected by these experiences. Employment support programs may serve high-ACE individuals but likely are unaware of their histories and the developmental or health deficits

Prevalence of Low Back Pain in Health Care Workers and Comparison with Other Occupational Categories in Iran: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: There are few research studies evaluating the significance of low back pain (LBP) in Iran, even though the majority of locally published surveys are written in the Persian language. In the present review study, we aimed at appraising published articles related to the burden of LBP and its divergence among different jobs. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in all accessible national and international electronic databases from 1948 to mid-2012. The international electronic databases were MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Sciences, Google Scholar, Scopus, CINAHL, and the Iranian eq

III Italian Consensus Conference on Malignant Mesothelioma of the Pleura. Epidemiology, Public Health and Occupational Medicine related issues.

The III Italian Consensus Conference on Pleural Mesothelioma (MM) convened on January 29th 2015. This report presents the conclusions of the 'Epidemiology, Public Health and Occupational Medicine' section. MM incidence in 2011 in Italy was 3.64 per 100,000 person/years in men and 1.32 in women. Incidence trends are starting to level off. Ten percent of cases are due to non-occupational exposure. Incidence among women is very high in Italy, because of both non-occupational and occupational exposure. The removal of asbestos in place is proceeding slowly, with remaining exposure. Practice of universal precautions and risk of occupational blood-borne viral infection among Congolese health care workers.

The extent of occupational injuries among health care workers in central Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is not documented. We sought to determine the incidence of percutaneous injury and exposure to blood and other body fluids in Congolese urban and rural hospitals in the previous year. Our data show high rates of percutaneous injury and exposure to blood and other body fluids, reflecting poor safety conditions for most Congolese health care workers.

Characterization of PIR detector for monitoring occupancy patterns and functional health status of elderly people living alone at home.

Changes in the behavioral activity of elderly people living alone at home may be an indicator for the assessment of their functional health status. In this paper, we evaluate the characteristics of a pyro-electric infrared detector (PIRD) to identify any section of the room where detector will fail to respond and assess the number of detectors required to identify the movements of the occupant reliably. The experimental results suggest that the PIRD output decreases very sharply from 1 V at 3 m to 0.2 V at 5 m and is below 0.5 V for hand movements at detection angle of <20 degrees and >50 degr

Risk of tuberculin skin test conversion among health care workers: occupational versus community exposure and infection.

A prospective observational cohort study to assess rates of and risk factors for tuberculin skin test (TST) conversion among health care workers (HCWs) was conducted at an urban hospital located in a high tuberculosis-incidence area in 1994-1998. All hospital employees undergoing required testing every 6 months were included. A total of 69 (1.2%) of 5773 susceptible employees had a documented TST conversion (overall rate, 0.38 per 100 person-years worked). No significant difference existed in conversion rates among employees with frequent, limited, or no patient contact. HCWs with a TST conver

Evaluation of a western blot test as a potential screening tool for occupational exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis in health care workers.

Health care workers (HCWs) have a higher than average risk for contracting Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection and tuberculosis (TB). No markers of MTB-exposure are available, and TB risk assessment is performed by tuberculin screening, identifying individuals with acquired MTB infection. This study evaluated a western blot (WB) anti-M. bovis A60 complex antibody as a MTB-exposure marker. WB reactivity was evaluated on 127 exposed and 28 non-exposed HCWs from four divisions of the Policlinico Hospital of Modena, and 140 non-exposed bacille Calmette-Guérin-vaccinated controls.
