Helicobacter pylori is a newly discovered gram-negative bacterium that lives in the human stomach and duodenum. Infection with this organism is strongly associated with type B antral gastritis and with peptic ulcer disease. Recent evidence from human volunteer studies, therapeutic trials with antimicrobial agents, and experiments with animal models indicates that H. pylori plays an etiologic role in the pathogenesis of type B gastritis. Gastric metaplasia is observed in virtually all patients with duodenal ulceration and may be the target tissue for these bacteria in the duodenum. Patients in …

OBJECTIVE: Despite several recent reports on the detection of Helicobacter DNA in human bile, there are still uncertainties concerning the correlation of these findings with biliary tract and liver diseases.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using molecular methods and immunohistochemistry (IHC), we investigated gallbladder and liver biopsy specimens from 22 adult Ukrainian patients with chronic cholecystitis for the presence of Helicobacter species. Patient sera were collected and tested for antibody reactivity to antigens of three Helicobacter spp. Detection of Helicobacter DNA was performed using a He…

We investigated the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection and the effect of eradication therapy in patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). H. pylori infection was found in 9 of 11 patients (81.8%). H. pylori eradication was obtained in all patients and significant platelet recovery was found in 5 of 9 patients (55.6%). One patient required re-eradication therapy because the urea breath test remained positive after the first therapy. After complete eradication, long time remission was obtained. The results suggested that the platelet count might be correlated closely with…

We compared the characteristics of a cultured human "Helicobacter heilmannii" isolate with those of other helicobacters found in animals. Phenotypic, protein profile, 16S rDNA sequence, and DNA-DNA hybridization analyses identified the human strain as H. bizzozeronii, a species frequently found in dogs. Thus, H. bizzozeronii may have zoonotic potential.

Helicobacter pylori and non-H. pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) are associated with gastritis, ulcer, and gastric neoplasia. Because of the impossibility to culture them, diagnosis remains based on microscopic examination and molecular analysis of biopsies. Owing to the lack of data concerning antibiotic resistance of NHPH, infected patients are usually treated using antibiotics, including clarithromycin. Herein, we describe, for the first time a human infection by Helicobacter suis harboring a mutation associated to clarithromycin resistance in H. pylori. Eradication was successful with a metronida…

Epidemiological and pathological studies of Helicobacter spp. in canine stomachs in Japan were performed to investigate strain specific pathogenicity. Gastric biopsies from 144 dogs with gastrointestinal diseases were evaluated for the presence of Helicobacter spp. using genus and species specific PCRs for Helicobacter felis, Helicobacter bizzozeronii, Helicobacter heilmannii sensu stricto (s.s.) and Helicobacter pylori. PCR indicated that 50/144 (34.7%) dogs were infected with Helicobacter spp. Of the genus positive samples, 21/50 could not be amplified by any of the species specific PCRs. To…

Intramucosal Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has been described in biopsy tissues and culture systems. However, the association of intramucosal H. pylori with histopathologic features has not been evaluated. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between intramucosal H. pylori and inflammatory reactions in H. pylori infection. In 113 randomly selected human gastric biopsies and 20 murine stomachs, which were inoculated with SSI every day for a week, immunohistochemical analysis for intramucosal H. pylori was done and correlated with histologic parameters. Electron microsc…

Due to its high incidence and severe consequences, glucolipid metabolic disorders (GLMD) remain a significant challenge for the global medical community. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a Gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the gastric mucosa, has a high infection rate worldwide, exceeding 50% in the global population. Although numerous studies have explored the associations between H. pylori and individual metabolic diseases, a systematic review framework that integrates these findings to provide a comprehensive perspective on GLMD is still lacking. Recent studies have indicated that H. p…

Helicobacter pylori infection has been associated with various gastric diseases, including ulcers, adenomas, and adenocarcinomas. Over 40 years since the discovery of H. pylori, numerous studies have shown that H. pylori eradication therapy can help prevent gastric cancer not only in healthy individuals but also in patients who have already been treated for early gastric cancer. Moreover, some studies have shown that eradication therapy can improve gastric mucosal inflammatory diseases, such as atrophic changes and intestinal metaplasia. This article reviews the epidemiology of H. pylori infec…

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a Gram-negative bacterium involved in the development of gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, gastric adenocarcinoma, and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue. Unexplained iron deficiency anemia, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and vitamin B12 deficiency have also been related to H. pylori infection, whereas for other extra-gastric diseases, the debate is still open. In this review, we evaluate and discuss the potential involvement of H. pylori infection in the pathogenesis of several respiratory diseases. A MEDLINE search of all studies published in Eng…

Helicobacter Pylori (H. pylori) is a Gram-negative flagellated microorganism that has been extensively studied since its first isolation due to its widespread diffusion and association with numerous diseases. While the bacterium is proved to be a causative factor for a number of gastric diseases such as gastritis, gastric adenocarcinoma, and MALT-lymphoma, its role at other gastrointestinal levels and in other systems is being thoroughly studied. In this article, we reviewed the latest published clinical and laboratory studies that investigated associations of H. pylori with hematologic diseas…

Helicobacter pylori is a highly-adapted gastrointestinal pathogen of humans and the immunology of this chronic infection is extremely complex. Despite the availability of antibiotic therapy, the global incidence of H. pylori infection remains high, particularly in low to middle-income nations. Failure of therapy and the spread of antibiotic resistance among the bacteria are significant problems and provide impetus for the development of new therapies and vaccines to treat or prevent gastric ulcer, and gastric carcinoma. The expansion of knowledge on gastric conventional and regulatory T cell r…

BACKGROUND & AIMS: There are data to suggest the existence of non-Helicobacter pylori gastritis. However, the risk factors and clinical course for H pylori-negative gastritis remain unclear. We aimed to examine the prevalence and determinants of H pylori-negative gastritis in a large multiethnic clinical population.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among patents scheduled for an elective esophagastroduodenoscopy or attending selected primary care clinics and eligible for screening colonoscopy at a single Veterans Affairs medical center. We identified cases of H pylor-negative gas…

This article summarizes the main findings concerning Helicobacter pylori associated with gastric MALT lymphoma (GML). Considered together, GML strains based on their virulence factor profile appear to be less virulent than those associated with peptic ulcers or gastric adenocarcinoma. A particular Lewis antigen profile has been identified in GML strains and could represent an alternative adaptive mechanism to escape the host immune response thereby allowing continuous antigenic stimulation of infiltrating lymphocytes.
