Evaluating the impact of a synthetic predator pheromone, a novel pest management tool, on target pests and insect communities in potato fields.

Despite their reputation for species specificity, pheromones can influence interactions across trophic levels. This is particularly relevant in agricultural systems where predator-derived cues could influence pest and natural enemies. The predatory spined soldier bug, Podisus maculiventris (Say) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), preys upon the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a major pest of solanaceous crops. Previous field work shows that a synthetic aggregation pheromone of P. maculiventris reduces beetle larval abundance through non-consumptive …

Multi-seasonal modelling of Carica papaya and Paracoccus marginatus interactions under climate change.

The papaya mealybug, Paracoccus marginatus, has emerged as a formidable threat to global tropical agriculture, capable of inducing devastating yield losses through its invasive sap-sucking behavior. While conventional models often overlook environmental complexities, in this study, we introduced a sophisticated multi-seasonal mathematical framework designed to unravel the intricate interplay between mealybug population dynamics, fluctuating climatic conditions, and the persistence of off-season natural reservoirs. Sensitivity analysis highlighted how parameter influences shift across seasons,

Two New Polyketides From Streptomyces sp. SA61: Isolation, Structure Elucidation, and Insecticidal Activity Against Bemisia tabaci.

To discover novel green bio-based insecticidal lead compounds, six polyketides, including two new compounds, strekingmycin I (5) and strekingmycin J (6), together with four known analogues, were isolated and identified from the fermentation products of earthworm gut-derived Streptomyces sp. SA61. Their structures were established by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis, including NMR, HR-ESI-MS, and single-crystal x-ray diffraction. Notably, the crystallographic data of strekingmycin G (3) were obtained for the first time, which unambiguously confirmed its absolute configuration. In insecticid

Characterization and Seasonal Expression Profiling of a Takeout/Juvenile Hormone-Binding Protein-Family Gene Associated With Diapause in Eurygaster integriceps.

Diapause in the Sunn pest, Eurygaster integriceps, is a key seasonal adaptation associated with migration, overwintering survival, and reproductive timing. However, the molecular components associated with this physiological state remain poorly characterized in this hemipteran pest. In this study, we identified and characterized a takeout-family transcript from E. integriceps (EiTO1; GenBank OP913374.1) and combined evolutionary, structural, and expression analyses to examine its association with seasonal physiological states. EiTO1 contained a 738-bp open reading frame encoding a 245-amino ac…

The competing endogenous RNA lnc94641-miR957-3p mediates male fertility in Zeugodacus cucurbitae Coquillett.

BACKGROUND: Insect spermatogenesis is a complex process. Numerous genes are involved in sperm motility, which is crucial for male fertility. Few long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the testis regulate insect spermatogenesis. We previously identified 364 testis-enriched lncRNAs in the globally invasive pest Zeugodacus cucurbitae Coquillett. One of these lncRNAs, lnc94641, is abundantly expressed in the testis; however, its role in spermatogenesis remains unknown. RESULTS: Suppression of lnc94641 expression led to a 60% decrease in spermatozoa count and a 29% decrease in offspring hatchability. A

Transmission dynamics and localization of tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus in cucurbits via sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius).

BACKGROUND: Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia), ridge gourd (Luffa acutangula), and pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) are major vegetables of the Cucurbitaceae family cultivated extensively in India. However, their production is severely affected by begomoviruses, which inflict significant global damage to cucurbits. Among these, tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV), a whitefly-transmitted, persistent, circulative, and non-propagative begomovirus, seriously threatens cucurbit cultivation, often leading to substantial yield losses. METHODS AND RESULTS: Understanding the interactions between vecto

Comparative transcriptome analysis reveals aggravated damage on rice plants by brown planthoppers under elevated CO2.

The increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration will inevitably affect the photosynthesis of C3 plants, thus affecting herbivorous insects. Previous studies have shown that elevated CO2 (eCO2) may aggravate damage of brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens for rice plants. However, the molecular mechanism of this phenomenon is unclear. The comparative transcriptome analysis combined with corresponding phenotypic changes of rice plants and BPHs under ambient CO2 (aCO2) and eCO2 were studied to reveal the molecular mechanism of aggravated damage. The contents of soluble sugar and free fatty aci

Evaluation of BG, NPR1, and PAL in cotton plants through Virus Induced gene silencing reveals their role in whitefly stress.

Whitefly is one of the most hazardous insect pests that infests a wide range of host plants and causes huge damage to crop worldwide. In order to engineer plants resilient to whitefly stress, it is important to identify and validate the responsive genes by exploring the molecular dynamics of plants under stress conditions. In this study three genes BG, NPR1, and PAL genes have been studied in cotton for elucidating their role in whitefly stress response. Initially, insilico approach was utilized to investigate the domains and phylogeny of BG, NPR1 and PAL genes and found out that these genes s

Insecticidal activity of the spider neurotoxin PPTX-04 through modulating insect voltage-gated sodium channel.

Ion channels on cell membrane are molecular targets of more than half peptide neurotoxins from spiders. From Pardosa pseudoannulata, a predatory spider on a range of insect pests, we characterized a peptide neurotoxin PPTX-04 with an insecticidal activity. PPTX-04 showed high toxicity to Nilaparvata lugens, a main prey of P. pseudoannulata, and the toxicity was not affected by the resistance to etofenprox (IUPAC chemical name:1-ethoxy-4-[2-methyl-1-[(3-phenoxyphenyl)methoxy]propan-2-yl]benzene, purity: 99%). On N. lugens voltage-gated sodium channel NlNav1 expressed in Xenopus oocytes, PPTX-04

A time-course transcriptomic analysis reveals the key responses of a resistant rice cultivar to brown planthopper infestation.

The brown planthopper (BPH) is one of the most problematic pests affecting rice (Oryza sativa L.) yields in Asia. Breeding rice varieties containing resistance genes is the most economical and effective means of controlling BPH. In this study, the key factors in resistance to BPH were investigated between the high-resistance rice variety "R26" and the susceptible variety "TN1" using RNA-sequencing. We identified 9527 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the rice varieties under BPH-induced stress. Weighted time-course gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) indicated that the incr

Genetic polymorphism and plant growth promotion traits of potent fungal entomopathogens of rice leaf folder.

Entomopathogenic fungal biocides are preferred for environment friendly sustainable management of insect pests due to their host specificity and harmlessness to non-target insects. Plant growth promotion (PGP) functions of the entomofungi are also important attributes but hitherto insignificantly explored. Therefore, virulence of 17 natural fungal entomocides (Cordyceps, Beauveria, Metarhizium, Nomuraea, Fusarium, Verticillium, Trichoderma and Paecilomyces spp.) were evaluated for pathogenicity against five rice pests (brown plant hopper (Nilaparvata lugens) and green leaf hopper (Nephotettix

Phytoene desaturase-silenced citrus as a trap crop with multiple cues to attract Diaphorina citri, the vector of Huanglongbing.

Huanglongbing (HLB) is one of the most destructive diseases in citrus worldwide. Unfortunately, HLB has no cure and management relies on insecticides to reduce populations of the vector, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae). We propose an attract-and-kill strategy using a trap crop as an alternative to vector control to reduce transmission of the pathogen, 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus'. We evaluated vector response to phytoene desaturase-silenced citrus trees using virus-induced gene silencing technology. Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) was used to produce a phytoene desaturase-si…

Identification of a wild carrot as carrot psylla (Bactericera trigonica) attractant and host plant chemistry.

Carrot psylla is one of the devastating pests of carrot throughout northern Europe and the Mediterranean basin. Here we characterized the behavioral response of psylla females towards different carrot germplasm and identified the chemical cues involved in the host selection of psylla females by oviposition choice experiments and metabolic profiling of leaf volatiles. In choice assays, carrot psylla displayed differential responses to tested 14 germplasm. Among germplasm, wild accessions 21793 and 20465 were highly preferred by carrot psylla, while wild accessions 20465 and the orange cultivar

The efficiency of Amblyseius swirskii in control of Tetranychus urticae and Trialeurodes vaporariorum is affected by various factors.

Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot is a well-known predator that is used for controlling the population of two-spotted spider mites (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch, and greenhouse whitefly (GHWF), Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood, in strawberry greenhouses. To find the effective factors that influence the efficiency of this predator, the predation rates of A. swirskii fed on (Ι) TSSM in the presence and absence of the pollen, webbing, and GHWF, as well as on (II) GHWF in the presence and absence of the pollen, and GHWF-produced honeydew were determined. Furthermore, developmental time, fecu

Therapeutic arthropods and other, largely terrestrial, folk-medicinally important invertebrates: a comparative survey and review.

Traditional healing methods involving hundreds of insect and other invertebrate species are reviewed. Some of the uses are based on the tenet of "similia similibus" (let likes be cured by likes), but not all non-conventional health promoting practices should be dismissed as superstition or wishful thinking, for they have stood the test of time. Two questions are addressed: how can totally different organ systems in a human possibly benefit from extracts, potions, powders, secretions, ashes, etc. of a single species and how can different target organs, e.g. bronchi, lungs, the urinary bladder,
