For the first time, inspired by magnetic resonance imaging-guidance high intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) technology, i.e., medication therapy and thermal ablation in one session, in a preclinical setting based on a developed mathematical model, the performance of doxorubicin (Dox) and its encapsulation have been investigated in this study. Five different treatment methods, that combine medication therapy with mild hyperthermia by MRI contrast ([Formula: see text]) and thermal ablation via HIFU, are investigated in detail. A comparison between classical chemotherapy and thermochemistry s

The practice of surgical intervention for the treatment of psychiatric disorders has a rich and fascinating history. Arguably dating back to more than 7 millennia ago, neurosurgery for psychiatric disease is shrouded in stigma, being widely portrayed in the media (almost invariably negatively). The first such procedure to be performed in modern history was conducted by the Swiss psychiatrist Gottlieb Burckhardt in 1882. The landscape of neurosurgery for psychiatric conditions has shifted constantly since, guided by new developments in neuroscience and surgical technology. In this article, we o

The authors aimed to evaluate the efficacy of application of ultrasound dissection technology and coagulation by using "Harmonic Focus" (HF) instrument, while performing anatomical resection of the lung in open thoracic surgery. The method was carried out in serial 20 patients with lung cancer, whom the lung anatomical resection was performed. A long attachment (17 cm) with curved branches was applied. There were 11 lobectomies and 9 pneumoectomies. The application of HF allowed the dissection of pleural adhesions, pulmonary ligament, a separation of roots of the lung elements, lymphatic nodes

This paper will review the possibilities of EUS guided anti-tumor therapy. Ablative energy may be delivered to a tumor under EUS guidance to destruct tumor cells by ultrasound itself, radiofrequency or radiation. Pilot results of endoscopic high intensity focused ultrasound in a human trial have been reported. The feasibility of performing EUS guided radiofrequency ablation has been reported in a swine model. An EUS bases radiation target simulation method has been developed for anal cancer therapy. Targeted delivery of an anti-cancer agent into a tumor under EUS guidance is possible as report

Uterine fibroids are common benign tumors that affect the female reproductive tract. They are responsible for considerable morbidity and deterioration of life quality. The main advantages offered by mini invasive techniques are low grade of invasiveness and short times of hospitalization. The most diffuse technique is uterine artery embolization (UAE). Common concerns with UAE include postprocedural pain, postembolization syndrome, and risk of infection. Image-guided thermal ablation techniques like radiofrequency ablation, percutaneous microwave ablation, and imaging-guided high-intensity foc

OBJECTIVE: The clinical application of magnetic resonance imaging-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) surgery for treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids is often limited because of the bowel between the abdominal wall and uterus. If bowels are in the pathway of sonication path, firstly filling the bladder, then filling the rectum, and emptying the bladder subsequently can be used to avoid them in recent research. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the modified bowel displacement technique (rectal filling first and then bladder filling, with or without subsequent bladder emptyi

Focal therapy is emerging as an organ-preserving strategy for selected patients with localized prostate cancer, aiming to preserve urinary and sexual function while maintaining acceptable cancer control. However, patient and technology selection remain complex because prostate cancer is often multifocal, clinically significant lesions may be missed by imaging or biopsy, and long-term comparative oncological data are limited. This narrative review summarizes current evidence and consensus recommendations on oncological suitability, histopathological risk features, tumor burden, imaging assessme

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although magnetic resonance imaging guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) thalamotomy has shown a robust safety and efficacy profile for tremor treatment, gait disturbances have been reported but often lack objective measurement. The aim of this study was to evaluate gait and balance outcomes in patients with essential tremor (ET)-only and tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease with or without ET (TDPD ± ET) who have undergone MRgFUS thalamotomy for treatment of their tremors, using validated, multidimensional measures.
METHODS: This retrospective review included all cons

Focal therapy offers a promising approach for treating localized prostate cancer (PC) with minimal invasiveness and potential cost benefits. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and brachytherapy (BT) are among these options but lack long-term efficacy data. Patient follow-ups typically use biopsies and multiparametric MRI (mpMRI), which often miss recurrences. PET/CT with PSMA has emerged as a promising tool for detecting residual disease or recurrence post-treatment, offering higher sensitivity and specificity than traditional imaging. We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent [

Segmenting the lesion areas from ultrasound (US) images is an important step in the intra-operative planning of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). However, accurate segmentation remains a challenge due to intensity inhomogeneity, blurry boundaries in HIFU US images and the deformation of uterine fibroids caused by patient's breathing or external force. This paper presents a novel dynamic statistical shape model (SSM)-based segmentation method to accurately and efficiently segment the target region in HIFU US images of uterine fibroids. For accurately learning the prior shape information

Essential tremor is the most common cause of tremor involving upper limbs, head and voice. The first line of treatment for limb tremor is pharmacotherapy with propranolol or primidone. However, these two drugs reduce the tremor severity by only half. In medication refractory and functionally disabling tremor, alternative forms of therapy need to be considered. Botulinum toxin injections are likely efficacious for limb, voice and head tremor but are associated with side effects. Surgical interventions include deep brain stimulation; magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound and thalamotomy f
