Capsaicin increases modulation of sympathetic nerve activity in rats: measurement using power spectral analysis of heart rate fluctuations.

We assessed the sympatho-vagal activities of the heart after administration of capsaicin by measuring the power spectral analysis in rats. There were major two frequency components of heart rate variability, which we defined as high (1.0 Hz <, HF) and low (LF, < 1.0 Hz) frequency components. Vagal blockade by atropine abolished the high frequency component, and lowered the amplitude of the low frequency component. On the other hand, under conditions of sympathetic blockade by propranolol, the low frequency component was reduced. Combined vagal and sympathetic blockade abolished all heart rate

Intractable hiccup induced by brainstem lesion.

Four patients with brainstem lesions presented with intractable hiccup and mild to moderate neurological signs. Two of the patients had been initially diagnosed as having a psychogenic cause for their hiccup. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated brainstem infarction in one case, tuberculoma at the junction of the medulla oblongata and the cervical spinal cord in two, and a vermian tuberculoma compressing the brainstem in one. The brainstem infarct and one of the medullary tuberculoma were not detected on high resolution enhanced computed tomography. The 3 patients with CNS tuberculoma

Severe cardiopathy in branching enzyme deficiency.

A 7 1/2-year-old girl had exercise intolerance and exertional dyspnea. Four months later, congestive heart failure developed, with recurrent chylous pleural effusions, and she died at age 8 1/2 years. Endomyocardial biopsy tissue showed abundant PAS-positive, diastase-resistant cytoplasmic deposits. Similar inclusions were seen in muscle, skin, and liver specimens. Postmortem studies showed that the abnormal polysaccharide was especially abundant in heart and muscle, but was also present in all other tissues, including the central nervous system. Glycogen isolated from heart, muscle, and spina

Therapeutic Outcomes of Fingolimod and Interferon Beta-1a in Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis: A Real-World Study from Jordan.

Background and Objectives: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system with rising prevalence in the Middle East. Real-world comparative data on disease-modifying therapies from this region remain limited. This retrospective study compared the clinical outcomes and tolerability of fingolimod and interferon beta-1a (IFN-β1a) among patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis treated at a large public referral hospital in Jordan. Materials and Methods: All eligible RRMS patients received fingolimod or IFN-β1a at a single tertiary hospital. The an

Muscle shape changes in Parkinson's disease impair function during rapid contractions.

AIM: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized, among the others, by muscle weakness. PD patients reach lower values of peak torque during maximal voluntary contractions but also slower rates of torque development (RTD) during explosive contractions. The aim of this study was to better understand how an impairment in structural/mechanical (peripheral) factors could explain the difficulty of PD patients to raise torque rapidly. METHODS: Participants (PD patients and healthy matched controls) performed maximum voluntary explosive fixed-end contraction of

Prepubertal chronic stress and ketamine administration to rats as a neurodevelopmental model of schizophrenia symptomatology.

Increased vulnerability to psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, has been associated with higher levels of stress. In the early development of the central nervous system, changes in function of glutamatergic N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors can possibly result in the development of psychosis, cognitive impairment and emotional dysfunction in adulthood. Thus, in this study we examined the behavioural consequences of the exposure of male rats to chronic stress (postnatal days 30-60) and ketamine administration (postnatal days 41-45); both during a sensitive developmental time window

Effects of clonidine on diuretic response in ascitic patients with cirrhosis and activation of sympathetic nervous system.

The effects of the addition of clonidine to diuretics on the mobilization of ascites in the short term (diuretic response and requirement of diuretics) and the long term (readmissions for tense ascites and requirement of diuretics) were examined in patients with cirrhosis and with increased sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity. We also studied neurohormonal, hemodynamic effects and side effects of clonidine and diuretics. Patients were randomized to receive placebo (group 1, n = 32) or clonidine (0.075 mg) twice daily (group 2, n = 32) for 3 months. After 8 days and for 10 days duration,

Insulin-associated modulation of neuroendocrine counterregulation, hypoglycemia perception, and cerebral function in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus: evidence for an intrinsic effect of insulin on the central nervous system.

Evidence for an intrinsic effect of insulin on the central nervous system is accumulating. To test the hypothesis that insulin per se may modulate neuroendocrine counterregulation, hypoglycemia perception, and cerebral function in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, we examined 27 patients without any sign of classical autonomic neuropathy or evidence of so-called hypoglycemia unawareness. We used the hyperinsulinemic (0.67 vs. 2.00 mU/kg.min), stepped hypoglycemic (5.6/3.5/2.4/2.0 mmol/L) clamp technique to assess the patient's awareness of and response to equivalent hypoglycemic stimuli und

EGPA at Diagnosis: A Comprehensive Single-Center Profile of Laboratory Findings and Clinical Evidence.

Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is a rare vasculitis. A key bio-logical hallmark is peripheral blood eosinophilia while antineutrophil cytoplasmic an-tibody (ANCA) positivity is not always present. Therefore, an early phase suspicion of EGPA leading to a correct diagnosis can be challenging. We performed an observa-tional cross-sectional study limited to baseline data on 38 patients between December 2019 and December 2025 at the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Unit, Messina, Italy. Data collection included eosinophil, neutrophil, and lymphocyte counts; ANCAs and antinuclea

Effect of Glycerol Administration on ECochG and VEMP Findings in Individual with Meniere's Disease.

The activity of several components of the vascular system appears to be diurnally regulated. Endothelial cell activation, leukocyte and platelet interactions and lipoprotein metabolism have all been shown to vary with time of day, but whether these variations are due to the endogenous circadian clock, exogenous factors, such as the light-dark cycle, or an interaction between the two remains to be determined. Endothelium-dependent vasodilation also varies diurnally. This rhythmicity is lost in individuals with established coronary disease has been shown to occur in the early stages of atheroscl

Sex- and Age-Dependent Differences in Autonomic Nervous System Functioning in Adolescents.

PURPOSE: We assessed sex- and age-dependent differences in a cross-sectional analysis of cardiac autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation during sleep in adolescents. METHODS: Nocturnal heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) metrics, reflecting ANS functioning, were analyzed across the night and within undisturbed rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep in 149 healthy adolescents (12-22 years; 67 female) from the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence. RESULTS: Nocturnal HR was slower in older, more pubertally advanced boys than in younger boys. In g

Physiological concomitants of perseverative cognition: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Rumination about the past and worries about the future (perseverative cognition) are extremely common, although pervasive and distressing, dysfunctional cognitive processes. Perseverative cognition is not only implicated in psychological health, contributing to mood worsening and psychopathology but, due to its ability to elicit prolonged physiological activity, is also considered to play a role in somatic health. Although there is emerging evidence that such negative and persistent thoughts have consequences on the body, this association has not yet been quantified. The aim of this study was

Absence of D1 dopamine receptors that stimulate prolactin release in the rat pituitary.

It has been shown recently that SKF 38393-A (2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-7,8-dihydroxy-1-phenyl-1H-3-benzazepine-7-ol), a D-1 receptor agonist, possesses a prolactin-releasing effect in the rat, though the pituitary or central nervous system location of the receptors involved has not been clarified. The aim of our study was to elucidate this point. SKF 38393-A administered to freely moving adult female and male rats induced a striking, short-lived increase of basal prolactin levels. The prolactin stimulatory effect of SKF 38393-A was counteracted by pretreatment with SCH 23390, A D-1 receptor blocker.

Intracardiac neuromodulation of pacemaker rate in the adult zebrafish heart in vitro.

Heart rate (HR) in vertebrates is determined by the discharge frequency of cardiac pacemaker cells, which are innervated by the autonomic nervous system. The portion of this system located within the heart, the intracardiac nervous system (ICNS), transmits impulses to cardiac effectors for control of cardiac output. Central autonomic neurons modulate the heart through sympathetic (acceleratory) and parasympathetic (inhibitory) axons in the vagosympathetic trunks. In the classical model of cardiac control, the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic efferent signals determines HR. Recen

Modulation of blood pressure by dietary potassium and sodium: sex differences and modeling analysis.

High Na+ intake has been linked to elevations in blood pressure, whereas K+ has the opposite effect. The underlying mechanisms involve complex interactions among renal function, fluid volume, fluid-regulatory hormones, vasculature, cardiac function, and the autonomic nervous system. These mechanisms are likely modulated by sex, given the known sex differences in blood pressure regulation and the higher prevalence of hypertension in men. The source of these observed sex differences may be traced to organ and tissue levels, given that kidney function, intrarenal renin-angiotensin system componen

Relations between daily stressful events, exertion, heart rate variability, and thoracolumbar fascia deformability: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The posture of performance-oriented sport climbers adapts in a way that likely promotes the development of low back pain. The thoracolumbar fascia, while also contributing to performance, seems to be involved in that process. Furthermore, there has been evidence of the stiffening of the fascial structures in disorders associated with negative affectivity. The study aims to investigate the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and the deformability of the thoracolumbar fascia in a sport climber in a natural setting. CASE PRESENTATION: Over a 30 day period, a 50-year-old

Moderate to severe but not mild RLS is associated with greater sleep-related sympathetic autonomic activation than healthy adults without RLS.

INTRODUCTION: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) patients have been found to have high rates of transitory increases in the activity of the sympathetic autonomic nervous system with increases in heart rate and blood pressure. These were identified by evaluating heart rate or blood pressure changes independent of any leg movement analyses. There has been an implicit assumption this high rate of sympathetic activations is abnormal, but there has been no direct comparison for similar measures with a healthy population free of RLS. Thus, it is not known if during sleep the rates of sympathetic nervous s

Mechanisms of chronic pain.

Chronic pain differs from acute pain in that it serves no useful function, causes suffering, limits activities of daily living, and increases costs of healthcare payments, disability, and litigation fees. Pain perception begins with activation of peripheral nociceptors and conduction through myelinated A delta and unmyelinated C fibers to the dorsal root ganglion. From here, signals travel via the spinothalamic tract to the thalamus and the somatosensory cortex. Modulation of sensory input (i.e., pain) occurs at many levels. Nociceptors are also neuroeffectors, and transmission can be modulate

Low Parental Empathy Predicts Callous-Unemotional Traits in Children With Enhanced Autonomic Sensitivity to the Environment.

INTRODUCTION: Recent evidence suggests that autonomic nervous system functioning can reflect individual differences in sensitivity to the environment, which in turn moderates the effects of family context on psychopathic and antisocial behaviour. Although some preliminary research suggests that the coordination of the sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic (PNS) branches of the autonomic nervous system may reflect sensitivity to environmental influences, the majority of research to date has been limited in its focus on just one branch, and little is known about the effects of parental empathy o
