Acute hip pain is a common presenting complaint amongst the military population. It can present in a variety of ways, with a broad range of differential diagnoses to consider. Most cases of acute hip pain in military patients tend to be traumatic in origin. Pathology within the hip can be a diagnostic challenge, as symptoms often overlap between differential diagnoses and examination findings are not always sensitive or specific. Any hip injury will potentially downgrade a military patient and can also be a significant cause of long-term morbidity. Being able to manage the patient with acute h

Congenital, developmental, and acquired conditions of the pediatric hip frequently present with sequelae in the adult. There is substantial overlap in the end-stage results of these pathologic conditions, including osseous changes, chondral/labral injuries, and premature osteoarthritis. This review discusses the top 10 etiopathogeneses of pediatric hip conditions and presents associated dysmorphisms in the adult on an illustrative, multimodality, case-based template. Quantitative imaging metrics and the role of advanced imaging techniques are reviewed. The ultimate goal is enhanced understandi

Although the incidence of hip fractures is decreasing, the overall prevalence continues to increase because of an aging population. People older than 65 suffer fractures at a rate of 0.6% per year--2% per year for persons older than 85. One in 5 patients suffering a hip fracture will die within a year. Additionally, the emergency physician must consider entities such as avascular necrosis, compartment syndrome, and muscular disruption. This article reviews patterns and complications of acute hip and thigh injuries and clinically relevant diagnostic, anesthetic, and treatment options that facil

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate if an association existed between the reflected head of rectus femoris avulsion injuries and labral tears in pediatric patients referred for magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation.
METHODS: Electronic medical records of the patients between the ages of 12 and 18 who were treated at the hospitals affiliated by McMaster University between June 2000 and November 2010 with a diagnosis of rectus femoris avulsion injuries were retrospectively identified and analyzed. Patients were included if they had

PURPOSE: Combined acetabular and pelvic ring injuries represent a unique subset of pelvic trauma and little is known regarding their complications and outcomes. We sought to further evaluate these injury patterns and quantify their outcomes.
METHODS: A retrospective review at a single level 1 trauma center was performed on all patients with operatively treated combined ring and acetabulum injuries during a seven-year period. Main outcome measurements include all-cause complication including residual neurologic deficit, deep infection, conversion to total hip arthroplasty, deep venous thrombos

Peripheral nerve traction injuries may occur after surgical care and can involve any of the lower extremity large peripheral nerves. In this review, the authors discuss injuries after knee or hip surgical intervention. The diagnosis, including electrodiagnostic studies, is time sensitive and also relies on a detailed history and physical examination. Successful prevention and treatment involve familiarity with risk and predisposing factors as well as prophylactic measures.

PURPOSE: Floating hip is a severe high-energy injury. Femoral fracture is an essential component of floating hip. However, few studies have addressed the relationship between the femoral fracture pattern and floating hip injury. In this study, we reviewed and summarized the epidemiological and clinical data of patients with floating hip.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients with a diagnosis of floating hip at our trauma center from January 2014 to December 2021. Data on patient demographics, characteristics of the injuries, associated injuries, whether sciatic nerve pals

CASE: Traumatic bilateral asymmetric hip dislocation represents an exceedingly rare injury pattern in which one hip dislocates anteriorly and the contralateral hip dislocates posteriorly. Few reports of this injury pattern have been published in the English literature, and no report of this pattern with arterial occlusion has been described. We report a case of asymmetric hip dislocations presenting with a pulseless lower extremity after a motor vehicle accident. No arterial injury was identified on computed tomography angiogram. Fractures of the proximal femur and acetabulum were also absent,

BACKGROUND: We previously established a small animal model of femoral head-neck cam-type hip deformity by inducing physeal injury in immature rabbits. We investigated whether this induced deformity led to hip osteoarthritis (OA) within 4 months.
METHODS: Six-week-old immature New Zealand White rabbits underwent surgery to induce physeal injury in the right femoral head, causing growth arrest and secondary head-neck deformity. Animals were divided into early-pre-OA (4 weeks) and late-OA (16 weeks) groups. Left hips served as (nonsurgical) controls. Radiographs were made to visualize deformitie

We have carried out a blind, prospective study of 50 consecutive patients undergoing replacement arthroplasty of the hip using two different approaches. Clinical assessment, including the Harris hip score and a modified Trendelenberg test, and electrophysiological examination of the abductor muscles of the hip were undertaken before and three months after surgery. We found that 48% of patients had preoperative evidence of chronic injury to the superior gluteal nerve. Perioperative injury to the nerve occurred commonly with both approaches to the hip. We did not find a significant correlation b

Acetabulum fractures, often resulting from high-energy trauma, increasingly affect both younger and older adults, impacting hip joint function and quality of life. Acute total hip arthroplasty (THA) offers a critical solution, especially beneficial for elderly patients or those with poor bone quality. This case series presents six patients with varying medical histories, all experiencing significant hip-related injuries necessitating total hip arthroplasty (THA). Cases range from complex acetabular fractures due to falls or motor vehicle accidents to complications following previous surgical i

Meniscal injuries are common and can alter knee biomechanics, increasing the risk of osteoarthritis. This study investigated the effects of unilateral meniscal injuries of different Stoller grades on gait kinematics and kinetics. A total of 158 participants were stratified by MRI into three groups: control group(Grade 0, n = 51), Grade I-II (n = 54), and Grade III (n = 53). Three-dimensional motion capture synchronized with force platforms was used to assess peak sagittal-plane joint angles, joint moments, and ground reaction forces. Multivariate analysis of covariance was applied to adjust fo

CONTEXT: Baseball pitching is a coordinated movement involving the spine. A previous study indicated that increased thoracic kyphosis angle in a standing position was a risk factor for medial elbow injuries in youth baseball players. However, spinal alignments in single-leg standing and their relationships with medial elbow injuries, scapular alignment, or hip joint range of motion are unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the difference in spinal alignment between standing and single-leg standing positions in youth baseball players and analyze their relationship with elbow injuries, scapular alignm

Anterior hip dislocation is uncommon, comprising only 5%-15% of hip dislocations. It usually occurs following a severe external rotation and abduction injury. These injuries are occasionally associated with acetabular fractures, which generally occur in the direction of dislocation. We describe a rare case of pubic-type anterior hip dislocation with concomitant anterior and posterior acetabular wall fractures in a young male following a road traffic accident. The dislocation could not be reduced by closed means and open reduction had to be performed. Reduction of the hip allowed the wall fragm

Problems that occur in the hip joint, such as a loose body or labral tear, can be treated arthroscopically or with conventional arthrotomy. Hip arthroscopy can facilitate both comprehensive access to and treatment of an evolving series of conditions that affect the hip joint. Candidates for hip arthroscopy should have reproducible symptoms and physical findings that limit function, and a history of mechanical symptoms. Following total hip replacement, when unexplained symptoms persist despite appropriate conservative treatment combined with a negative workup, arthroscopy can be valuable. Intra

INTRODUCTION: pelvic fracture in children is considered one of the most important injuries due to its high mortality. They are rare, but have a major impact on patients' functional outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the clinical evolution and functional grade in pediatric patients with pelvic fractures who have already been treated, either conservatively or surgically.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: descriptive-cross-sectional-retrospective study. Sample of 24 patients, aged five to 16 years with pelvic fracture, treated from 2016 to 2021. Clinical and functional outcome was assessed using the Barthel

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a challenging surgical procedure that can be used to treat severely dislocated hips. There are few reports regarding cemented THAs involving subtrochanteric shortening osteotomy (SSO), even though cemented THAs provide great advantages because the femur is generally hypoplastic with a narrow, deformed canal.
PURPOSES: We evaluated the utility of cemented THA with SSO for Crowe group IV hips, and assessed the relationship between leg lengthening and nerve injury. Our goal was to describe surgical techniques for optimizing surgical outcomes while mini

Fracture-dislocation of the hip is an infrequent injury in adolescence. In combination with transepiphyseal separation of the capital femoral epiphysis, the injury is rare and catastrophic. A review of orthopaedic literature shows varied recommendations as to treatment approaches. The most recent articles have suggested that open reduction through a posterior approach and internal fixation is the best way to treat this problem initially. Later reconstructive measures are usually required because this injury often leads to avascular necrosis of the femoral head. The patient and family should be
