A short history of Auto-Rickshaw.

Auto-Rickshaw was developed in the early 2000s at EMBL Hamburg as an automated macromolecular structure-determination platform for crystallography and structural biology. Its initial motivation was to provide beamline users with rapid feedback on whether diffraction data were sufficient for structure solution. The platform was not merely a wrapper around existing crystallographic programs; it encoded the expert decisions needed to select phasing, density-modification, model-building and refinement protocols according to the information available from the experiment. Since its first publication

The History of the Discovery of Vitamin K.

Vitamin K was discovered during the 1930s when a strange haemorrhagic disorder was observed in chickens fed a cholesterol-free diet. A fat-soluble agent, present in green leafy vegetables and hog liver, was able to restore haemostasis in the chickens. The chemical structure and the physiological role of vitamin K were uncovered resulting in the Nobel Prize being awarded to Henrik Dam and Edward Doisy in 1943. The discovery of vitamin K led to a breakthrough in our understanding of the human coagulation system, where vitamin K plays a pivotal role in activating prothrombin and other coagulation

On the History of Hepatic Vein Catheterization.

Hepatic vein catheterization (HVC) in man was first performed 80 years ago in the wake of right-sided heart catheterization. Several new methods, recognitions and concepts followed, especially the indirect Fick-method for determination of splanchnic blood flow. Five years passed before pressure measurements were performed and routine HVCs were done in liver patients. Later came splanchnic kinetics of test substances, dyes, metabolites, hormones and bioactive material and counter current wedged and balloon occlusion pressure. HVC has been a prerequisite for our understanding of the pathogenesis

Equine cyathostomins-Hidden histories.

Cyathostomins (also known as small strongyles or small redworms) are ubiquitous parasites of equids. They are found in a wide range of climatic regions, and inhabit the large intestine of their hosts. While infections are often sub-clinical, clinical consequences ranging from chronic to acute, and most notably, acute larval cyathostominosis, can occur in specific circumstances. Control of cyathostomin infection is complicated by widespread drug resistance. This Chapter provides a broad review of cyathostomin biology and host-parasite relationships, and also highlights significant knowledge gap

Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma: The Weight of History.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a malignant tumor arising from the epithelial cells of the bile ducts. Its incidence is increasing, and it is associated with a high mortality rate due to its aggressive behavior and frequent late diagnosis. We report the case of a 52-year-old man with a history of dyslipidemia and active smoking who was brought to the emergency department following a suicide attempt. The patient suspected he had a neoplastic disease, similar to the CCA that had affected his mother. He reported a three-month history of weight loss, asthenia, fever, and night sweats. Laboratory evalu…

History of surgical approaches in orthopaedics.

Surgical approaches in bone surgery have undergone a long evolution over more than 130 years. While a number of publications have been devoted to the history of internal fixation, surgical approaches have remained neglected from this perspective. The development of approaches in musculoskeletal surgery is inextricably linked to four personalities. Theodor Kocher, in 1892, pointed out that descriptions of surgical approaches must be an essential part of surgical textbooks of operative techniques; James Edwin Thompson, in 1918, formulated the basic requirements for the surgical approaches to the…

History of Dorsal Rhizotomy for Spasticity.

The history of dorsal rhizotomy for the treatment of spasticity was reviewed, from its inception to future perspectives. The evolution of this surgical intervention was staged into five distinct phases: "Dawn and Decline," "Revival," "Establishment," "Development," and "Future." Key contributions during each period were highlighted, with particular focus on the progression of surgical techniques and the evolution of intraoperative neurophysiological procedure. Insights leant from this historical review provide valuable guidance for the future development of dorsal rhizotomy in the management o…

A brief history of Aβ imaging.

β-Amyloid (Αβ) imaging revolutionized the in vivo assessment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) Αβ pathology and its changes over time, increasing our insights into Aβ deposition in the brain by providing highly accurate, reliable, and reproducible quantitative statements of regional and global Aβ burden in the brain, proving essential for the differential diagnosis, staging, and evaluation of disease-specific anti-Αβ therapeutic approaches. Longitudinal observations, coupled with different disease-specific biomarkers to assess potential downstream effects of Aβ, have confirmed that Αβ deposition in

Clinical History and Examination of Headaches.

Clinicians are advised to identify headache types by assessing symptoms, triggers, severity, and red flags, utilizing the "SOCRATES" mnemonic for structured history-taking. A background knowledge of primary and secondary headache characteristics can then be applied. A thorough physical examination protocol focuses on neuroanatomy, extending the neurologic examination to include the cervical spine, myofascial trigger points, and temporomandibular joint. Effective headache diagnosis and management depend on accurate history-taking, detailed physical examinations, and a solid understanding of hea…

History of the Treatment of Rectal Prolapse.

Rectal prolapse is the intussusception of the rectum, resulting in its full-thickness protrusion out of the anus. Approximately 0.5% of the general population is affected by this condition, with a higher occurrence in women and the elderly. While benign, rectal prolapse can be debilitating, as it can cause pain, bleeding, mucus discharge, and fecal incontinence. The earliest documented records of rectal prolapse date back to Ancient Egypt (1500-1200 BC), describing laxatives and topical therapeutics for the treatment of an anus turned inside out. Many techniques were devised to hold the reduce

The History of Measles and Vaccine Development.

Measles is one of the oldest human diseases, but the fact that it was separate from smallpox, scarlatina and rubella was only disclosed a century ago. It is extremely contagious, as the infection may spread for up to 4 days before the first symptoms appear. One patient may infect 12-18 secondary cases, who then spread the infection further. Before the vaccine era, measles caused 2-3 million deaths a year, with remote populations facing chaotic consequences from epidemics. Safe and inexpensive live-virus vaccines, often combined with mumps and rubella components, have been available for 50 year

History of the administration of psychedelics in France.

This article reviews the historical protocols for the administration of "classic" psychedelics in France, from the 1920s to the 1960s. Taking a chronological approach, it investigates the way mescaline, LSD, and psilocybin were administered, the subjects involved, the route of administration, the dosage, and the epistemological context of the research. From the 1930s, the Sainte-Anne school dominated French experimentation with psychedelics, inserting these studies on "hallucinogens" into a biological conception of therapeutics, where the notion of "shock" dominated. The sessions show particul
