Sexual minority disparities in opioid misuse, perceived heroin risk and heroin access among a national sample of US adults.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) adults have elevated use of many substances compared to heterosexual adults, yet LGB disparities in specific types of opioid misuse and perceived opioid risk have not been fully characterized. METHODS: Data on 126,463 adults (including 8241 LGB adults) were from the 2015-2017 National Survey of Drug Use and Health. Logistic regression was used to estimate lesbian/gay (L/G) and bisexual disparities (relative to same-gender heterosexuals) for: lifetime prescription pain reliever misuse, heroin use and injection heroin use; past-year opioid misuse and

Review of outcome research on marital and family therapy in treatment for alcoholism.

This review of controlled studies of marital and family therapy (MFT) in alcoholism treatment updates the earlier review by O'Farrell and Fals-Stewart (2003). We conclude that, when the alcoholic is unwilling to seek help, MFT is effective in helping the family cope better and motivating alcoholics to enter treatment. Specifically, both Al-Anon facilitation and referral and spouse coping skills training (based on new findings) help family members cope better, and CRAFT promotes treatment entry and was successfully transported to a community clinic in a new study. Once the alcoholic enters trea

Internalized homophobia and internalizing mental health problems: a meta-analytic review.

Research on internalized homophobia (IH) has linked it to both mental and physical health outcomes. Extant research indicates that IH and mental health are related in a variety of different subgroups of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) persons. However, much of this research has suffered from methodological issues. Studies have frequently substituted distress-related constructs (e.g., self-esteem and general well-being) for measures of internalizing mental health problems. Furthermore, many studies have misapplied measures of IH designed for gay men with lesbian samples. The current study used

Inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in tobacco use-related surveillance and epidemiological research.

Researchers and public health advocates have long recognized the importance of demographic characteristics such as sex, race, ethnicity, age, and socioeconomic status in their efforts to understand and control the use of tobacco among population groups. Targeting prevention and cessation efforts based upon such characteristics has consistently been demonstrated to be both efficient and effective. In recent years, attention has modestly turned to how two additional demographic variables, sexual orientation and gender identity, can add to our understanding of how to reduce tobacco use. Research

Amphetamine use and its correlates among youths living with HIV.

Amphetamine use and its correlates are examined among youths living with HIV (YLH) to determine whether its use is associated with increased transmission acts and poor health. Amphetamine use, other HIV-related risk acts, T-cell counts, emotional distress, coping style, and symptoms of HIV are examined in 337 YLH. One third of YLH engaged in amphetamine use in their lifetime, and 21% of youths reported current use (i.e., in the last 3 months). Compared with those who never used, users initiated other drug use at younger ages, used more types of drugs, reported more emotional distress, and empl

Prevalence and health implications of anti-gay discrimination: a study of black and white women and men in the CARDIA cohort. Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults.

This study investigates the prevalence of self-reported experiences of discrimination based on sexual orientation among black and white women and men (25 to 37 years old) who are members of CARDIA, a multisite longitudinal study of cardiovascular risk factors. Among the 1,724 participants who responded to a 1989 questionnaire obtaining data on lifetime number of sexual partners and who participated in the Year 7 exam (1992-1993), which included questions about discrimination, 204 (12 percent) reported having at least one same-sex sexual partner: 27 (7 percent) of the 412 black women, 13 (6 per

Unconventional conceptions and HIV.

The condom is widely recommended as the principal method for preventing HIV transmission, but such advice obviously does not apply to women who are seeking to become pregnant. In this sense, 'safer sex' is incompatible with reproduction. Existing research into HIV transmission has examined the choices made by those wishing to conceive within a sexual relationship; such research shows that HIV is not a highly significant factor in their decision-making processes. This study aims to extend the debate by exploring the decision-making processes of women seeking to become pregnant with donated sper

Associations Between Latent Classes of Trauma Exposure and Minority Stressors and Substance Use Among Cisgender Sexual Minority Women.

Psychosocial stressors (e.g., minority stressors, trauma exposure) profoundly impact sexual minority women's (SMW's) risk of alcohol and other drug (AOD) use. However, research has not examined whether there are distinct typologies (i.e., patterns) of psychosocial stressors and whether these vary based on sociodemographic characteristics or are differentially associated with AOD outcomes (e.g., alcohol dependence) among SMW. This study aimed to identify latent classes of SMW reporting distinct typologies of psychosocial stressors and examine predictors and outcomes of latent classes of psychos

Associations Between Childhood Victimization, Adult Victimization, and Physical Health Among Sexually Diverse Adults at Different Stages of Life.

Purpose: Research examining health disparities in sexually diverse populations is quite variable. The purpose of the present article was to shed light on the conflicting findings pertaining to minority stress and health by examining the potential impact of age, childhood victimization, and different measurements of health. Methods: The present research used data from the Generations Study, a questionnaire study of sexually diverse adults (ages 18-60) surveyed between 2016 and 2019. We modeled direct and indirect links among (1) childhood exposure to physical or sexual abuse, (2) adult exposure

Hidradenitis suppurativa in sexual and gender minorities: A review and considerations for providers.

The literature on hidradenitis suppurativa in sexual and gender minorities remains sparse. This review article aims to discuss critical factors for providers to consider in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual patients with hidradenitis suppurativa, including associated comorbidities, gender-affirming hormonal therapy, squamous cell carcinoma, infections in HIV-positive patients, and creating a welcoming clinic for sexual and gender minority patients.

Gay and lesbian health agendas.

The aim of this study was to validate gay and lesbian health agendas pushed by organizations representing these groups. To this end, we created a health agenda matrix based on 25 narratives of representatives from 16 different gay and lesbian groups in ten state capitals in Brazil collected in another study. Each agenda was considered to have reached consensus when the mean score was equal to or greater than seven and SD was equal to or less than two. The validated agendas addressed the following themes: physical and psychological violence; the care needs of lesbians related to uterine and bre

Bigotry and the human-animal divide: (Dis)belief in human evolution and bigoted attitudes across different cultures.

The current investigation tested if people's basic belief in the notion that human beings have developed from other animals (i.e., belief in evolution) can predict human-to-human prejudice and intergroup hostility. Using data from the American General Social Survey and Pew Research Center (Studies 1-4), and from three online samples (Studies 5, 7, 8) we tested this hypothesis across 45 countries, in diverse populations and religious settings, across time, in nationally representative data (N = 60,703), and with more comprehensive measures in online crowdsourced data (N = 2,846). An examination of emotion regulation as a mechanism underlying eating disorder pathology in lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB) individuals generally experience eating disorders at higher rates than heterosexual individuals. While there is limited research examining why LGB individuals experience higher levels of eating pathology, emotion regulation (ER) deficits have been associated with higher rates of other forms of psychopathology in this population. The present study examined the impact of specific ER deficits on the relationship between LGB status and eating pathology. We hypothesized that 1) LGB individuals would report higher levels of ER deficits, and 2) ER deficits

Barriers to family history knowledge and family communication among LGBTQ+ individuals in the context of hereditary cancer risk assessment.

Openness about identity as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual orientations and gender identities (LGBTQ+) may cause strain on relationships between family members, which could lead to limited knowledge of cancer family history and reduced communication with family members. As a result, members of the LGBTQ+ community may have more difficulty accessing genetic counseling services for inherited cancer risk. We applied a mixed-methods approach to explore potential barriers to knowledge of cancer family history and family communication among participants of the Cancer Hea

Individual factors and cisgender college students' attitudes and behaviors toward transgender individuals.

The present study is one of few to investigate both anti-trans discrimination and anti-trans prejudice. It examined four individual factors (religiosity; political beliefs; affiliation with LGBTQ [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer] people; gender role beliefs) through a lens of hetero-cis-normativity to understand their association with anti-trans attitudes and reported behaviors. Using a sample of 302 cisgender college students from across the United States, hierarchical multiple regressions on bootstrap samples were used to analyze how these factors are associated with anti-tran

Understanding pathways to e-cigarette use across sexual identity: A multi-group structural equation model.

This study explored the relationships between sexual violence, smoking behaviors, suicidality and past 30-day e-cigarette use under the theoretical framework of Minority Stress Theory. The 2017 National Youth Risk Behavioral Survey was utilized to study a nationally representative sample of sexual minority (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and unsure) and heterosexual high school students (N = 7882). Multi-group structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to examine whether sexual violence and suicidality had a direct effect on e-cigarette use, after controlling for prior smoking behaviors (cigaret

Female same-sex desires: conceptualizing a disease in competing medical fields in nineteenth-century Europe.

This article examines the ways in which female same-sex desires were represented across a range of nineteenth-century European medical writings. While recognizing the conceptual innovations of the late-nineteenth-century psychiatric idea of "sexual inversion," it argues that the category of "sexual invert" was positioned alongside other medical representations of same-sex desires, such as gynecological descriptions of women with hypertrophy of the clitoris and socio-cultural analyses of the tribade-prostitute. These representations complicate current historical accounts of sexual inversion, wh

Assessing your office for care of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender patients.

Practitioners act as guide, protector, and confidant to their patients' most vulnerable health care concerns. Arguably, one of the most important times to consider the dynamics of a health care relationship is when treating culturally diverse populations such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) patients. This article outlines several recommendations for how physicians can begin the process of assessing their office and practice habits for supportive care of LGBT patients, including evaluating your belief systems, understanding risk factors associated with LGBT patients, modifying

Donor insemination and parenting: concerns and strategies of lesbian couples. A review of international studies.

The concerns and strategies of lesbian couples at the time of donor insemination, throughout pregnancy and during early parenthood differ in several ways from those of heterosexual couples. For the majority of the lesbian couples insemination was the first option to conceive. They reported having strategies for their children growing up in a heteronormative society, and the parents shared time with and responsibility for the children equally. Issues considered most important by the couple were an open and non-judgmental attitude from caregivers without heteronormative assumptions, knowledge ab
