The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence and causes of maternal deaths and stillbirths at the Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wad Medani, Sudan, from 1 January 2003 through 31 December 2007. All maternal deaths and stillbirths during this period were reviewed and classified retrospectively. There were 146 maternal deaths and 33034 live births, giving a maternal mortality ratio of 442/100,000 live births. The age range was 18-42 years with a mean (standard deviation) of 30.57 (5.26) years. The most common cause of death was septicaemia following obstructed labour or abort

BACKGROUND: The maternal mortality ratio in poor countries is reported to be 650/100,000 live births. This high maternal mortality may be associated with increasing numbers of HIV related deaths in sub-Saharan Africa.
OBJECTIVE: To establish the direct causes of maternal mortality related to the HIV syndrome.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was done of 378 maternal deaths at King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban, between January 1998 and December 2004. Results. The commonest cause of death related to HIV was World Health Organization (WHO) clinical classification stage IV disease, followed by

Acute hepatitis is a common disease of young adults worldwide. Mortality is generally low, as most cases are self-limiting. Fatality does occur in a few and certain factors are responsible. A retrospective review and analyses of complications contributing to deaths due to acute hepatitis (AH), in hospitalised patients, over a five-year period, at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, is here presented. Mortality was very high at 48%. This was much higher than the overall mortality recorded in the hospital during the same period. Liver failure was the commonest complication associat

Multiple-cause-coded mortality rates for thromboembolism in the Oxford region of the UK showed a steady decline fom 1975 to 1998. The trend for admission rates was less clear-cut, but recent changes were not specific to women of ages associated with use of oral contraceptives or hormone-replacement therapy.

A prospective study of all cases of congenitally acquired syphilis diagnosed at Goroka Base Hospital was conducted between January 1998 and December 1999. 67 affected neonates and children were seen, of whom 19 died during the first admission and 3 died during the period of follow-up. Congenital syphilis caused 5.5% of 994 neonatal admissions, but 22% of all neonatal deaths. The major risk factor for death in affected babies was low birthweight. A birthweight of less than 2 kg had an odds ratio for death of 30.0 (95% confidence interval 6.90-131.1). During the time of the study 5385 women atte

Two hundred and ninety-one very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants were studied prospectively during the period of 1988-1993. All inborn VLBW infants and most of the VLBW infants born in Greater Stockholm and requiring neonatal intensive care were included in this study. The overall mortality was 17.5% and the mortality in the group with the lowest gestational age at birth, i.e. 23-24 weeks, was 25%. The mortality for boys was higher than for the girls. The mode of delivery, i.e. vaginal versus caesarean section and multiple birth, did not seem to affect the mortality rate. Respiratory insufficie

The association between maternal/infant characteristics and postdischarge mortality was determined for 19,573 infants from a single regional perinatal center. Postdischarge mortality was not associated with infant sex or ethnicity, mother's marital status, education, method of delivery, or income status. Mortality risk was statistically increased for infants who were neonatal intensive care unit graduates, of low birth weight, preterm, or small for gestational age. Infants who were either of low birth weight, neonatal intensive care unit graduates, or preterm represented 38% of hospital discha

The morbidity and mortality of admissions to the Special Care Baby Unit at New Mulago Hospital, Kampala are described for 1598 infants seen during the 12-month period of 1989. The overall neonatal mortality rate on the Unit was 18.0%, which has shown only slight improvement during the period 1984-1989. The major causes of death were, in descending order of frequency: birth asphyxia, respiratory distress syndrome, aspiration syndromes, very low birthweight, infection, anaemia and congenital malformations. Birth asphyxia was the most common cause of death in infants weighing over 2500 g while re

INTRODUCTION: The impact of hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy on future mortality risk is still debated. Self-reported exposure may be a major source of bias in many studies. We aimed to determine mortality following hospital-reported hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy and compare to results based on self-reported surgeries.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included 37 140 women from the second (1995-1997) and third (2006-2008) HUNT surveys. HUNT (the Trøndelag Health Study) is a population-based Norwegian cohort study, and we linked to the Norwegian Cause of Death Registry, the Cancer Reg
