Temporal Window of Integration XOR Temporal Window of Synchrony.

One of the most extensively studied constructs in multisensory research is the temporal window of integration. Its extent has been variously … synchrony has been found to be neither necessary nor sufficient for the occurrence of multisensory illusions. This suggests that subjective simultaneity and integration phenomena are dissociable, undermining the conclusions of studies that use them interchangeably. Failing to disentangle the temporal windows in which they occur has led to contradictory fin …

Neural correlates of an illusionary sense of agency caused by virtual reality.

Sense of agency (SoA) is the sensation that self-actions lead to ensuing perceptual consequences. The prospective mechanism emphasizes that SoA arises from motor prediction and its comparison with actual action outcomes, while the reconstructive mechanism stresses that SoA emerges from retrospective causal processing about the action outcomes. Consistent with the prospective mechanism, motor planning regions were identified by neuroimaging studies using the temporal binding (TB) effect, a behavioral measure often linked to implicit SoA. Yet, TB also occurs during passive observation of another

Illusory Responses across the Lewy Body Disease Spectrum.

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to study pareidolias, or perceived meaningful objects in a meaningless stimulus, in patients across the Lewy body (LB) disease spectrum, where most do not report hallucinations or delusions. METHODS: We studied illusory responses on the Noise Pareidolia Task in 300 participants (38 cognitively impaired LB, 65 cognitively unimpaired LB, 51 Alzheimer disease spectrum [AD-s], 146 controls). Pairwise between-group comparisons examined how diagnosis impacts the number of illusory responses. Ordinal regression analysis compared the number of illusory responses a

Pareidolias are a function of visuoperceptual impairment.

Pareidolias, or the misperception of ambiguous stimuli as meaningful objects, are complex visual illusions thought to be phenomenologically similar to Visual Hallucination (VH). VH are a major predictor of dementia in Parkinson's Disease (PD) and are included as a core clinical feature in Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB). A newly developed Noise Pareidolia Test (NPT) was proposed as a possible surrogate marker for VH in DLB patients as increased pareidolic responses correlated with informant-corroborated accounts of VH. This association could, however, be mediated by visuoperceptual impairment.…

"I Spy with my Little Eye, Something that is a Face…": A Brain Network for Illusory Face Detection.

The most basic aspect of face perception is simply detecting the presence of a face, which requires the extraction of features that it has in common with other faces. Putatively, it is caused by matching high-dimensional sensory input with internal face templates, achieved through a top-down mediated coupling between prefrontal regions and brain areas in the occipito-temporal cortex ("core system of face perception"). Illusory face detection tasks can be used to study these top-down influences. In the present functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we showed that illusory face perception

Impaired perception of illusory contours and cortical hypometabolism in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Neuroimaging evidence suggests that areas of the higher-order visual cortex, including the lateral occipital complex (LOC), are engaged in the perception of illusory contours; however, these findings remain unsubstantiated by human lesion data. Therefore, we assessed the presentation time necessary to perceive two types of illusory contours formed by Kanizsa figures or aligned line ends in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Additionally, we used 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) to measure regional cerebral glucose metabolism in PD patients. Although there were

The search for instantaneous vection: An oscillating visual prime reduces vection onset latency.

Typically it takes up to 10 seconds or more to induce a visual illusion of self-motion ("vection"). However, for this vection to be most useful in virtual reality and vehicle simulation, it needs to be induced quickly, if not immediately. This study examined whether vection onset latency could be reduced towards zero using visual display manipulations alone. In the main experiments, visual self-motion simulations were presented to observers via either a large external display or a head-mounted display (HMD). Priming observers with visually simulated viewpoint oscillation for just ten seconds b

Description and clinical application of the Pulfrich effect.

BACKGROUND: In 1922, German physicist Carl Pulfrich described an illusory binocular perceptual disturbance in which an object moving across an observer's field of vision is perceived as traveling along a curved trajectory. OBJECTIVE: To review the discovery of the Pulfrich effect, and subsequent clinical applications. METHODS: We translated Pulfrich's description and searched for subsequent publications using electronic databases and review of reference lists in identified publications. RESULTS: In 1901, Pulfrich developed an optical device to accurately compare stereoscopic photographs, bu

The onset-repulsion effect and motion-induced mislocalization of a stationary object.

The influence of a moving target on memory for the location of a briefly presented stationary object aligned with the initial location of that moving target was examined. Memory for the location of the stationary object was displaced backward (ie in the direction opposite to target motion), and memory for the initial location of the moving target was also displaced backward (consistent with an onset-repulsion effect); displacement of the stationary object did not differ from displacement of the moving target. Displacement in memory for the initial location of a moving target was not influenced

Straight lines, 'uncurved lines', and Helmholtz's 'great circles on the celestial sphere'.

Helmholtz's famous pincushioned chessboard figure has been used to make the point that straight lines in the world are not always perceived as straight and, conversely, that curved lines in the world can sometimes be seen as straight. However, there is little agreement as to the cause of these perceptual errors. Some authors have attributed the errors to the shape of the retina, or the amount of cortex devoted to the processing of images falling on different parts of the retina, while others have taken the effects to indicate that visual space itself is curved. Helmholtz himself claimed that t

Multistable syllables as enacted percepts: a source of an asymmetric bias in the verbal transformation effect.

Perceptual changes are experienced during rapid and continuous repetition of a speech form, leading to an auditory illusion known as the verbal transformation effect. Although verbal transformations are considered to reflect mainly the perceptual organization and interpretation of speech, the present study was designed to test whether or not speech production constraints may participate in the emergence of verbal representations. With this goal in mind, we examined whether variations in the articulatory cohesion of repeated nonsense words--specifically, temporal relationships between articulat

Understanding the structural determinants of object confusion in memory: an assessment of psychophysical approaches to estimating visual similarity.

Computer-generated shapes varying on visual dimensions such as curvature, tapering, and thickness have been used to investigate identification deficits in the category-specific visual agnosia (CSVA) Patient E.L.M.. However, whether the implemented variations on each of these dimensions were perceived by novice observers as "similar amounts of change" is unknown. To estimate distance in psychophysical shape space, sets of shapes were developed using two different scaling methods--an objective method based on visual search, and a subjective method based on judgments of similarity--and a third ap

Eye movement, vection, and motion sickness with foveal and peripheral vision.

BACKGROUND: Both motion sickness and the illusion of self-motion (i.e., vection) can be induced by moving visual scenes. The results of a previous study imply that motion sickness is primarily dependent on visual motion in foveal vision while vection is primarily dependent on motion in peripheral vision. HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that similar motion sickness would be produced when tracking a single moving dot and a full screen of moving dots, but that vection would be greater when tracking multiple moving dots. METHOD: Sixteen subjects viewed moving images presented on a virtual realit

Reevaluating the Imiquimod Model: A Barrier to Translational Progress in Psoriasis.

Once hailed as a breakthrough in psoriasis research, the imiquimod (IMQ) mouse model is now overused, inconsistently applied, and increasingly disconnected from human disease. Nearly a decade after our initial critique, the field remains reliant on a tool that models acute, innate inflammation rather than chronic, adaptive immunity. In this paper, we revisit the limitations of the IMQ model, highlighting methodological drift, poor transcriptomic overlap with psoriasis, and the illusion of mechanistic discovery. We argue that progress in psoriasis research now depends on moving beyond this mode

Dizziness and the Otolaryngology Point of View.

Dizziness can be due to pathology from multiple physiologic systems, the most common being vestibular. Dizziness may be categorized as vertigo, disequilibrium, lightheadedness, or oscillopsia. Vertigo is an illusion of motion often caused by asymmetrical vestibular input to the brainstem. To evaluate vertigo, it is essential to include the symptom's quality, timing, frequency, trigger, influence from positional changes, and other associations from the history. Oculomotor, otologic, balance testing, positional testing, and nystagmus testing are equally important components of the examination. T

Vestibular problems in diving and in space.

On firm ground our sense of balance is supplied by super abundant input from several sensoric sources. In other environments insufficient or conflicting input may cause vestibular problems. In diving, vertigo may be caused by a variety of influences, like sensory deprivation, optokinetic illusion, asymmetric vestibular stimulation, inner ear barotrauma, decompression sickness, breathing gas toxicity, high pressure neurological syndrome, sea sickness and intense noise. During space flight some of the mentioned mechanisms may contribute to vestibular problems, although space motion sickness bein
