A multi-modal dataset of electroencephalography and functional near-infrared spectroscopy recordings for motor imagery of multi-types of joints from unilateral upper limb.

As one of the important brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigms, motor imagery (MI) enables the control of external devices via identification of motor intention by decoding the features of Electroencephalography (EEG). Movement imagination of multi-types of joints from the same limb allows the development of more accurate and intuitive BCI systems. In this work, we reported an open dataset including EEG and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) recordings from 18 subjects performing eight MI tasks from four types of joints including hand open/close, wrist flexion/extension, wrist abd…

Self-reference and emotional memory effects in older adults at increased genetic risk of Alzheimer's disease.

The present study investigated whether cognitively healthy older adults who are carriers of the ε4 allele of apolipoprotein E, the most prevalent genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease, benefit from self-referential processing and emotional processing to the same degree as noncarriers of this gene. Participants encoded emotional and nonemotional narratives using a baseline-orienting task, semantic elaboration, or imagination-based self-referential processing and then completed a recognition memory test. Both groups of older adults showed enhanced recognition memory for narrativ…

Underwater Transparent Miniature "Mechanical Hand" Based on Femtosecond Laser-Induced Controllable Oil-Adhesive Patterned Glass for Oil Droplet Manipulation.

Development of underwater superoleophobic surfaces has captured the imagination of researchers because of their applications; especially, oil manipulation based on such surfaces has attracted much attention. Here, we show a simple and effective way to fabricate an underwater transparent miniature "mechanical hand" based on controllable oil-adhesive patterned glass using a femtosecond laser. The underwater oil-adhesive force of the patterned glasses that compose the "mechanical hand" device can be controlled from ultralow to ultrahigh by adjusting the ratio of the untreated flat glass area to t…

Hearts beating through decellularized scaffolds: whole-organ engineering for cardiac regeneration and transplantation.

Whole-organ decellularization and tissue engineering approaches have made significant inroads during recent years. If proven to be successful and clinically viable, it is highly likely that this field would be poised to revolutionize organ transplantation surgery. In particular, whole-heart decellularization has captured the attention and imagination of the scientific community. This technique allows for the generation of a complex three-dimensional (3D) extracellular matrix scaffold, with the preservation of the intrinsic 3D basket-weave macroarchitecture of the heart itself. The decellulariz…

Transrectal impalement of an incense stick in a child presenting as foreign body in the urinary bladder.

The diversity of objects that can be found in the urinary bladder often surpasses the urologist's imagination and mostly they are introduced per urethrally. Impalement injuries of the rectum with bladder perforation have been rarely reported. A high index of clinical suspicion is required to make the diagnosis of bladder perforation while assessing patients presenting with rectal impalement. In this interesting case, a young male child presented with haematuria and dysuria. He had a history of accidentally sitting on an agarbatti (Indian incense stick) stand while playing, followed by perianal…

Anger and the heart: perspectives on cardiac risk, mechanisms and interventions.

In the popular imagination, anger has long been linked to cardiovascular diseases (CVD), but empirical validation from case-control and prospective studies emerged only in the 1970's. After describing the multidimensional nature of anger and its assessment (via self-report or observed in structured interviews), this paper selectively reviews evidence in (a) behavioral epidemiology, (b) stress and biological processes with implications for cardiopathogenesis, and (c) behavioral/pharmacological interventions for anger/hostility reduction. Although evidence is inconsistent, chronic feelings of an…

All this happened, more or less: thoughts on 'truth', the role of fiction and its potential application in mental health and psychiatric nursing research.

Fundamental differences in the philosophy of history as an academic discipline are briefly explored, primarily from two perspectives. The tr … o the postmodern psychiatric nursing historian, all histories are fictions, created with the use of imagination, and have characteristics that are similar to the literary constructions that are more traditionally identified as fiction. A variety of literature is used in order to explore such claims, and the conclusion is drawn that, with caution and careful a …

Caloric content and industrial processing modulate the mental simulation of food concepts.

INTRODUCTION: Grounded cognition theories propose that concepts, including food stimuli, are represented through the partial reactivation of sensory and motor experiences. Evidence suggests that foods subjectively perceived as unhealthy tend to elicit stronger sensorimotor simulations, which may, in turn, increase their perceived attractiveness and consumption. However, it remains unclear to what extent objectively defined food properties, specifically caloric content and degree of industrial processing, modulate this simulation. METHODS: In this study, 99 Italian-speaking participants rated

Exploring the synergistic effectiveness of music and mental imagery to improve motor skill performance in sports: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Prior literature suggests that both music and imagery have beneficial effects on motor skill performance in sport settings. However, evidence for their combined use is still scarce. We conducted a preregistered (PROSPERO protocol number CRD42024538656) systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines where we synthesized and critically appraised studies that have evaluated the efficacy of interventions that combine mental imagery and music (henceforth: MIMUS) on the learning, retention, and improvement of motor skills of athletes and healthy individuals, and compared their impact to imagery o

DRDNet: a dual-view representation decoupling network for handwriting imagery EEG classification.

Objective. Handwriting imagery (HI) based on electroencephalography (EEG) offers a non-invasive route to text input and complex intention expression for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, HI EEG decoding is challenged by low signal-to-noise ratios, non-stationarity, cross-session distribution shifts, and the coexistence of continuous temporal trends and local high-response patterns.Approach. We propose a Dual-View Representation Decoupling Network (DRDNet) for HI EEG classification under within-subject cross-session and cross-subject evaluation settings. DRDNet first constructs two com

Efficacy of Digital Dance on Brain Imagery, Cognition, and Health: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Multidomain interventions have demonstrable benefits for promoting healthy aging, but self-empowerment strategies to sustain long-term gains remain elusive. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effects of digital somatosensory dance game participation on brain imagery changes as primary outcomes and other physical and mental health measures as secondary outcomes related to healthy aging. METHODS: Between August 31, 2020, and June 27, 2021, this randomized controlled trial recruited 60 eligible participants older than 55 years with no recent engagement in digital dance games. A com

The positive dimension of schizotypy is associated with self-report measures of autobiographical memory and future thinking but not experimenter-scored indices.

ABSTRACTThe ability to remember our past and to imagine the future are critical to our sense of self. Previous research has indicated that they are disrupted in schizophrenia. However, it is unclear (i) whether this is found when examining experimenter-scored indices of content and/or participants' self-report of phenomenological characteristics, and (ii) how these abilities might be related to symptoms. This study sought to address these questions by taking a dimensional approach and measuring positive and negative schizotypal experiences in healthy people (n = 90). Participants were given cu

Cortical activity involved in perception and imagery of visual stimuli in a subject with aphantasia. An EEG case report.

Aphantasia has been described as the inability to voluntarily evoke mental images using the "mind's eye." We studied a congenital aphantasic subject using neuropsychological testsand 64 channel EEG recordings, in order to studycortical activity involved in perception and imagery evaluating event-related potentials(N170, P200, N250). The subject is in the normal range of the neuropsychological tests performed, except for specific imagery tests. The EEG results show that when he evokes the same mental image, he starts the evoking process from left temporal instead of frontal areas, he does not a

Predicability (ease of predication) as semantic substrate of imageability in reading and retrieval.

It was proposed by Jones (1985) that the apparent influence of a word's imageability upon the probability of the word being read correctly by a deep dyslexic person could be understood in terms of an underlying semantic variable, ease of predication (also termed predicability). In a recent critique, de Mornay Davies and Funnell (2000) claim to have identified a number of problems with the ease of predication proposal. It is shown here, however, that it is the critique itself which is fundamentally flawed. In contrast, the predicability approach continues to identify correctly the semantic subs

Exteroceptive and interoceptive stimuli in dystonia.

Some patients with torsion dystonia experience a dramatic increase or decrease in symptoms when performing specific activities. The activities that influence dystonic symptoms vary from person to person. An activity or sensory stimulus that reduces symptoms has been called a "sensory trick" or, in cervical dystonia, a "geste antagoniste." When a single activity induces symptoms of dystonia, the dystonia is called "task specific." We have discovered that in some patients, thinking about a sensory trick or task affects the dystonia in the same way as actually performing the activity. We present
