[Scalded skin syndrome in children associated with S. aureus of non phage group II. Report of a case contracted in West Africa (Togo)].

The authors report the case of a 19 m. old girl developing a Lyell syndrome associated with a S. aureus belonging to phage group I-III. A survey of the literature is made: the toxic exfoliation is not a characteristic of S. aureus, phage group II. It seems that there are two different toxins for which some physicochemical features are well known. An immunologic immune deficiency is frequently observed in adults. The child reported, manifested some signs of depressed cellular immunity.

[Nezelof syndrome with secondary immunodeficiency (author's transl)].

A child with recurrent infections is presented. The frequent diarrhea leads to a severe malnutrition. The immunological work-up disclosed: absent IgA and low IgG serum levels, deficient cellular immunity and abnormal neutrophil chemotaxis. The cellular immunity and the neutrophil chemotaxis were improved with the nutritional status. At present the patient shows a partial combined immunodeficiency. The diagnosis of the case as a Nezelof's syndrome is discussed, as well as the addition of a secondary immunodeficiency caused by the recurrent infections and the malnutrition.

Nutrition in pediatric HIV infection: setting the research agenda. Nutrition and immune function: overview.

Malnutrition can have adverse, even devastating effects on the antigen-specific arms of the immune system and on generalized host defensive mechanisms. Protein/energy malnutrition and/or deficiencies of single nutrients that assist in nucleic acid metabolism generally lead to atrophy of lymphoid tissues and dysfunctions of cell-mediated immunity. Deficiencies of single nutrients can impair production of key proteins. Trace element deficiencies are often multifactorial. Essential fatty acid deficiencies can reduce or perturb the synthesis of cytokine-induced eicosanoids. Arginine deficiency can

AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE. Patients with LRBA deficiency show CTLA4 loss and immune dysregulation responsive to abatacept therapy.

Mutations in the LRBA gene (encoding the lipopolysaccharide-responsive and beige-like anchor protein) cause a syndrome of autoimmunity, lymphoproliferation, and humoral immune deficiency. The biological role of LRBA in immunologic disease is unknown. We found that patients with LRBA deficiency manifested a dramatic and sustained improvement in response to abatacept, a CTLA4 (cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4)-immunoglobulin fusion drug. Clinical responses and homology of LRBA to proteins controlling intracellular trafficking led us to hypothesize that it regulates CTLA4, a potent inhibitory imm

[Immunological abnormalities in migraine and cluster headache-epiphenomenon or pathogenetic factors?].

An increasing number of papers deal with immunological factors in headache syndromes such as migraine and cluster headache. The aim of this review is to give an overview of the factors that have been measured and to assess their reliability and relevance for the pathogenesis of these headaches. Most of the studies are handicapped by methodological problems, especially the different classifications of headaches, the lack of adequate controls and methodological problems with the measurement of certain immune parameters. Nevertheless, immunological abnormalities have been shown to be reproducible

Epigenetic disruption meets immune deficiency: a case report of ICF syndrome linked to DNMT3B mutation.

Immunodeficiency, centromeric instability, and facial anomalies (ICF) syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive primary immunodeficiency, with fewer than 120 cases reported worldwide. ICF type 1 (ICF1) is the most prevalent subtype. Despite its rarity, ICF1 presents a distinct set of clinical features that necessitate increased awareness, particularly in populations with high rates of consanguinity. This case presents a two-year-old Palestinian boy born to consanguineous parents who presented with recurrent respiratory tract infections, facial dysmorphisms, and hypogammaglobulinemia. A comprehen

Value of lymph node biopsy in unexplained lymphadenopathy in homosexual men.

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) manifested by severe opportunistic infections, Kaposi's sarcoma, or lymphoma often has a prodrome of lymphadenopathy accompanied by constitutional symptoms. We studied the histopathologic findings of lymph node biopsy specimens and peripheral blood immunologic parameters of 24 clinically indistinguishable homosexual men with chronic generalized lymphadenopathy. Two different morphological patterns were observed: (1) lymph nodes with follicular and paracortical hyperplasia in 21 patients who had had no clinical deterioration and (2) an atypical pat

Lymphokine-activated killer cells in primary immunodeficiencies and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Cytotoxic mechanisms (e.g., natural killer (NK) lysis, antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte lysis) play an important role in host defense against various infections and neoplasms. Lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cytotoxicity, induced in vitro by incubating mononuclear cells with interleukin 2 (IL-2) for 2-5 days, may also represent an important component of the body's cytotoxic repertoire. In 10 patients with congenital cellular immunodeficiencies, including 5 with severe combined immunodeficiency, the mean LAK activity in a 3-hr chromium release assay against

[Epstein-Barr-virus-induced lymphoproliferative diseases].

Infections with EBV are of increasing importance in pediatrics. Molecular and immunological methods have led to important advances in our understanding of the biological properties of this virus and the immunological consequences to its host. EBV-associated lymphoproliferative disorders mainly arise in immunodeficient patients by the unchecked polyclonal outgrowth of EBV-infected B-cells. On the other hand, primary genetic changes in B-cells (chromosomal translocation and oncogene deregulation) may also lead to induction of monoclonal lymphoma.

Case Report: Expanding Clinical, Immunological and Genetic Findings in Sideroblastic Anemia With Immunodeficiency, Fevers and Development Delay (SIFD) Syndrome.

Since the first description of the syndrome of sideroblastic anemia with immunodeficiency, fevers and development delay (SIFD), clinical pictures lacking both neurological and hematological manifestations have been reported. Moreover, prominent skin involvement, such as with relapsing erythema nodosum, is not a common finding. Up to this moment, no genotype and phenotype correlation could be done, but mild phenotypes seem to be located in the N or C part. B-cell deficiency is a hallmark of SIFD syndrome, and multiple others immunological defects have been reported, but not high levels of doubl

Induction of AIDS-like disease in macaque monkeys with T-cell tropic retrovirus STLV-III.

The T-cell tropic retrovirus of macaque monkeys STLV-III has morphologic, growth, and antigenic properties indicating that it is related to HTLV-III/LAV, the etiologic agent of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in humans. Four of six rhesus monkeys died within 160 days of STLV-III inoculation with a wasting syndrome, opportunistic infections, a primary retroviral encephalitis, and immunologic abnormalities including a decrease in T4+ peripheral blood lymphocytes. These data show that an immunodeficiency syndrome can be produced experimentally in a nonhuman primate by an agent from

Morphological profiling of human T and NK lymphocytes by high-content cell imaging.

The immunological synapse is a complex structure that decodes stimulatory signals into adapted lymphocyte responses. It is a unique window to monitor lymphocyte activity because of development of systematic quantitative approaches. Here we demonstrate the applicability of high-content imaging to human T and natural killer (NK) cells and develop a pipeline for unbiased analysis of high-definition morphological profiles. Our approach reveals how distinct facets of actin cytoskeleton remodeling shape immunological synapse architecture and affect lytic granule positioning. Morphological profiling

Diagnostic approach to primary ciliary dyskinesia: a review.

UNLABELLED: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a heterogeneous disease with impaired mucociliary transport leading to respiratory disorders, hearing impairment and male infertility. PCD can be diagnosed by clinical features together with functional and structural analysis of the cilia. To prevent bronchiectasis with a marked reduction in quality of life, early diagnosis is essential. The rarity of PCD and the costs of ultrastructural analysis of cilia require a rational diagnostic concept. We therefore reviewed the literature and compared clinical manifestations as well as functional and stru

Loss of IRF-4-binding protein leads to the spontaneous development of systemic autoimmunity.

IFN regulatory factor 4-binding (IRF-4-binding) protein (IBP) is a novel type of activator of Rho GTPases that is recruited to the immunological synapse upon TCR stimulation. Here we demonstrate that loss of IBP leads to the spontaneous development of a systemic autoimmune disorder characterized by the accumulation of effector/memory T cells and IgG+ B cells, profound hypergammaglobulinemia, and autoantibody production. Similar to human SLE, this syndrome primarily affects females. T cells from IBP-deficient mice are resistant to death in vitro as well as in vivo and exhibit selective defects

The different faces of GATA2 deficiency: implications for therapy and surveillance.

GATA2 deficiency is one of the most common genetic predispositions to pediatric myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in children and adolescents. The wide spectrum of disease comprises, among others, hematological, immunological and pulmonary manifestations, as well as occasionally distinct organ anomalies. Due to the elevated risk of progression, nearly all individuals with GATA2-related MDS eventually undergo a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) at some point in their lives. Nevertheless, the optimal timing, method, and even the indication for HSCT in certain cases are still matter of

A Patient with Postpartum Hypopituitarism (Sheehan's Syndrome) Developed Postpartum Autoimmune Thyroiditis (Transient Thyrotoxicosis and Hypothyroidism): A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

A 36-year-old woman with postpartum hypopituitarism (Sheehan's syndrome: SS) developed postpartum autoimmune thyroiditis (PPAT). She delivered a baby by Caesarean section (620 mL blood loss). At 1 month post partum, she developed thyrotoxicosis due to painless thyroiditis (autoimmune destructive thyroiditis). She was positive for antithyroid antibodies. Postpartum and hypoadrenalism-induced exacerbation of autoimmune thyroiditis caused the thyrotoxicosis due to autoimmune destructive thyroiditis. ACTH was undetectable. She had ACTH deficiency and secondary hypoadrenalism. Hydrocortisone was st

Human genetic and immunological determinants of SARS-CoV-2 infection and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) induces pneumonia and acute respiratory failure in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients with inborn errors of immunity to type I interferon (IFN-I). The impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection varies widely, ranging from mild respiratory symptoms to life-threatening illness and organ failure, with a higher incidence in men than in women. Approximately 3-5% of critical COVID-19 patients under 60 and a smaller percentage of elderly patients exhibit genetic defects in IFN-I production, including X-chromosome-linked TLR7 and autosomal TLR
