An extraordinary cause of intestinal obstruction, incarcerated obturator hernia.

AIM: Presenting an extraordinary cause of intestinal obtuction, leading to incarcerated obturator hernia. CASE REPORT: We present a rare case of obturator hernia in a 90-year-old female, who presented with a three-day history of inability to defecate and abdominal pain, distension, and vomiting on the day of presentation. Hours later, a computed tomography scan revealed a bowel obstruction secondary to a right-sided obturator hernia. She underwent an emergency exploratory laparotomy and the incarcerated bowel was reduced with a repairment of the hernial defect. The patient demonstrated an une

Rare Presentation of Incarcerated Incisional Richter's Hernia of the Cecum.

Richter's hernia, also called a partial enterocele, involves a protrusion of peritoneum with subsequent strangulation or incarceration of only part of the lumen of the anti-mesenteric portion of the small bowel through a fascial defect. We report a rare presentation of incarcerated incisional Richter's hernia of the cecum in a 39-year-old female. The patient presented with acute abdominal pain that gradually improved. Physical examination revealed right lower quadrant tenderness and nodularity just above an abdominoplasty scar. Subsequent computed tomography scan demonstrated a 1 cm by 1 cm hy…

Amyand's Hernia: Perforated Appendix in an Incarcerated Inguinal Hernia.

Amyand's hernia is an unusual condition characterized by the presence of a normal or inflamed appendix located within an inguinal hernia. We present a rare situation wherein a 56-year-old male patient presented with an incarcerated inflamed appendix in a right inguinal hernia. He was emergently taken to the operating room, with diagnostic laparoscopy changed to open, due to incarcerated cecum and terminal ileum. The incarcerated segment had to be resected with primary anastomosis. The inflamed and purulent contents were washed out, and the hernia defect was left unrepaired due to the presence

Letter to the Editor: Case of Appendix Incarcerated in an Umbilical Hernia.

Umbilical hernias and acute appendicitis are common general surgical problems, but an appendix incarcerated in an umbilical hernia is quite rare. We present a case of such and briefly review the available literature on the topic. We conclude that future authors should include a minimum set of information in such case reports or case series so that readers can gain as much as possible from our collective experience with this uncommon problem.

Neutropenia in Incarcerated Adolescents Secondary to Intranasal Quetiapine Misuse.

Objective: Between April 2015 and May 2016, a number of young males incarcerated at a Youth Justice center in New South Wales, Australia, were noted to have unexplained and significant neutropenia. None of the adolescents were prescribed quetiapine; however, it was prescribed for other young people in the center for this time period. The authors undertook a case series review to investigate the cause of this neutropenia. Methods: Case series review, including review of all pathology, electrocardiograms, medication charts, and medical file notes. Results: Quetiapine was used in the center; howe

Psychosocial treatment for incarcerated methamphetamine users: the Philippines experience.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate a psychosocial treatment program for prisoners incarcerated because of methamphetamine use. It compared the outcomes of prisoners who received the program while incarcerated, those who were released and received the treatment as part of community-based drug recovery program and a waitlist-control group (WC) with no treatment. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A quasi-experimental design was use with pre- and post-test surveys administered to three groups: a WC group, a pre-release treatment-while-incarcerated (TWI) group, and a post-release outpati

Health Implications of Housing Assignments for Incarcerated Transgender Women.

Transgender women (i.e., persons who were assigned male sex at birth but who live and identify as female) experience forms of discrimination that limit their access to stable housing and contribute to high rates of incarceration; once incarcerated, the approaches used to assign them housing within the jail or prison place them at risk for abuse, rape, and other outcomes. Yet, a paucity of studies explores the implications of carceral housing assignments for transgender women.Whether the approaches used to assign housing in jails and prisons violate the rights of incarcerated transgender person…

Patterns of Maltreatment Co-Occurrence in Incarcerated Youth in Australia.

Child maltreatment research is increasingly recognizing the need to capture patterns of co-occurrence between different types of abuse/neglect and to consider their associations with psychosocial functioning. Few studies have examined these issues in justice-involved youth despite the fact that rates of maltreatment and trauma-related psychopathology are disproportionately high among this population. This study examined profiles of self-reported child physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect among incarcerated juveniles in Victoria, Australia, using latent class analysis. We

Family member death among formerly incarcerated persons.

Bereavement carries consequences for the health and socioeconomic well-being of surviving family members. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, the current study investigates whether formerly incarcerated individuals experience the death of a family member at higher rates than the general population. We find that relative to those without a history of incarceration, formerly incarcerated individuals are more likely to experience the death of an immediate family member by young adulthood. Subsequent analyses demonstrate that deaths occurring during or af…

Escaping the Prison of Mind: Meditation as Violence Prevention for the Incarcerated.

People in prison are disproportionately affected by health problems, some of which lead to imprisonment and some of which are caused by imprisonment. Mental illness and substance use disorders fall into both of these categories, but they are not the only ailments affiliated with incarceration. Prior to their incarceration, many people in prison did not have safe housing or stable employment and job security, and institutional policies and/or budgetary concerns prevent many inmates from receiving adequate health care while in prison. Prison inmates in the United States are both victims and perp…

Prisons and Embodiment: Self-Management Strategies of an Incarcerated Population.

Weight gain and obesity in prison are, like elsewhere, associated with an increase in caloric intake and reduction in physical activity, but these factors are not solely under the control of a prisoner. Nineteen semistructured interviews were conducted in two male prisons in the United Kingdom to explore participants' thoughts, beliefs, and feelings on the role prison plays on weight change. Data from interviews were analyzed through grounded theory methodology. The concept of embodiment was used to explain not only how prisoners tend to believe the physical and emotional consequences of impri

Small bowel adenocarcinoma incarcerated within an inguinal hernia.

BACKGROUND: Small bowel adenocarcinomas are rare malignant tumors that account for less than 2% of gastrointestinal malignancies. In addition, tumor incarceration in an inguinal hernia is also rare entity. We herein report a first case of small bowel adenocarcinoma incarcerated within an inguinal hernia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old man with asymptomatic anemia (hemoglobin, 8.6 g/dl) had a checkup at our hospital. Colonoscopy revealed bleeding through the ileocecal valve and an annular stricture by a tumor in the ileum. Endoscopic biopsy revealed a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of th…

Laparoscopic Treatment of an Incarcerated Meckel's Diverticulum in a Femoral Hernia.

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the persistence of the omphalomesenteric duct. It is usually asymptomatic but may present with bleeding, infec … tapled. Due to an uneventful postoperative course, the patient left the hospital after two days. An incarceration of a MD in a femoral hernia is rare. Tangential resection of the MD with simultaneous hernia repair in a TAPP technique seems to be a sufficient approach, when it is conducted by an experienced surgeon.

Maternal health outcomes for incarcerated women: A scoping review.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To inform a systematic synthesis of what is known about the maternal health outcomes of incarcerated women, this scoping review uses a theoretical framework of intersectional feminism. BACKGROUND: Despite rising imprisonment of women, there is a lack of research, from a feminist perspective, on perinatal health outcomes among incarcerated women. DESIGN: Systematic scoping review using the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodology. METHODS: In consultation with a medical research librarian, key databases and journals were searched for English and French-language

Iatrogenic Incarcerated Diaphragmatic Hernia after Nissen Fundoplication.

Postoperative iatrogenic diaphragmatic hernias have been reported sparingly after several thoracic and abdominal surgeries. Although rare, a delay in diagnosis can lead to life-threatening cases of strangulation or perforation, as well as cardiovascular and respiratory insufficiency. This is a case of a 78-year-old female who developed acute obstructive symptoms secondary to herniation of the distal stomach through a defect in the central tendon of the diaphragm. The diaphragmatic defect was presumed to be iatrogenically acquired after Nissen fundoplication one year prior. Other etiologies wer

Intention and Initiation of Breastfeeding Among Women Who Are Incarcerated.

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative recommends that all mothers be shown how to breastfeed, even when mothers and newborns are separated. Most incarcerated women are separated from their infants after the postpartum hospital stay, creating barriers to breastfeeding. We examined breastfeeding among a sample of women participating in a prison-based pregnancy program. Quantitative data indicated that women who discussed breastfeeding with their doulas were more likely to initiate breastfeeding. Three qualitative themes were identified: Benefits of Breastfeeding, Barriers to Breastfeeding, and R
