LGBTQ+ Parents and Infant Feeding: An Analysis of the Household Pulse Survey Dataset.

PURPOSE: Human milk is the optimal food for newborns; however, infant feeding practices of parents who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, or sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQ+) are largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to describe infant feeding practices in LGBTQ+ families and compare to heterosexual or cisgender families. METHODS: Secondary analyses of parents with an infant less than 12 months from the Household Pulse Survey (April-July 2024) were conducted. Demographic characteristics to include sexual orientation and gender identification were extracted. Infant feeding

Differential diagnosis of IgE-mediated allergy in young children with wheezing or eczema symptoms using a single blood test.

BACKGROUND: Allergy-like symptoms are common in young children, but the case history and physical examination cannot identify the underlying origins of overlapping symptom profiles. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a blood test, Phadiatop Infant (Pharmacia Diagnostics AB, Uppsala, Sweden), for differentiating the capability of IgE-mediated disease in young children with recurrent wheezing, eczema, or both. METHODS: One hundred forty-seven children (mean age, 2.0 years) were consecutively referred to 2 allergy centers by their primary care physician for recurrent wheezing, eczema, or both. The allergis

Situation and determinants of the infant and young child feeding (IYCF) indicators in Madagascar: analysis of the 2009 Demographic and Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Studies evaluating child feeding in Madagascar are scarce despite its importance in child growth during the first two years of life. This study assessed the associations between the WHO infant and young child feeding (IYCF) indicators and stunting and identified determinants of inappropriate child feeding practices. METHODS: The most recent Demographic and Health Survey was used including a total of 1956 infants aged 0-23 months. Logistic regressions were performed for the association between IYCF indicators and stunting and for the determination of risk factors for inappropriate

Conducting an Oral Food Challenge: An Update to the 2009 Adverse Reactions to Foods Committee Work Group Report.

Oral food challenges are an integral part of an allergist's practice and are used to evaluate the presence or absence of allergic reactivity to foods. A work group within the Adverse Reactions to Foods Committee of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology was formed to update a previously published oral food challenge report. The intention of this document was to supplement the previous publication with additional focus on safety, treatment of IgE-mediated allergic reactions, guidance for challenges in infants and adults, psychosocial considerations for children and families partic

Diagnosis and management of childhood food allergy.

The pediatrician plays a pivotal role in the initial diagnosis of food allergy. Alternative diagnoses are considered as a careful history, physical examination, and directed laboratory tests determine the type of adverse reaction and the responsible food. Through elimination diets in infants, appropriately selected tests for specific IgE, and, in some cases, supervised oral food challenges, a diagnosis is secured. Treatment consists of strict dietary elimination with provisions for emergency management of accidental ingestions. Referral to an allergist and dietitian is made as warranted by the

Infant feeding experiences and concerns among caregivers early in the COVID-19 State of Emergency in Nova Scotia, Canada.

The global emergency caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted access to goods and services such as health care and social supports, but the impact on infant feeding remains unclear. Thus, the objective of this study was to explore how caregivers of infants under 6 months of age perceived changes to infant feeding and other food and health-related matters during the COVID-19 State of Emergency in Nova Scotia, Canada. Four weeks after the State of Emergency began, between 17 April and 15 May 2020, caregivers completed this online survey, including the Perceived Stress Sca

Somatic development of the infant monkey following in utero exposure to caffeine.

Caffeine has been associated with a number of reproductive and developmental effects in animals and humans. In an effort to characterize the potential effects of caffeine on the developing infant, 40 adult female monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were randomly divided into three groups and exposed at 0, 0.15, and 0.35 mg/ml (equivalent to 0, 10-15, and 25-30 mg/kg/day, respectively) of caffeine via their drinking water, before, during, and after pregnancy. Maternal blood and milk samples were collected following parturition. Infants were separated from their mothers within 12 hr of birth and were

Metabolic alkalosis due to the use of an oligoantigenic diet in infancy.

A 7-month-old boy on an oligoantigenic diet because of multiple food intolerances presented with anorexia, failure to gain weight and severe hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis with hyperreninemia. Clinical symptoms and biochemical abnormalities disappeared after adequate dietary supplementation with potassium and sodium chloride. This case emphasizes that minimal daily mineral requirements must be provided in infant diets, and highlights the risk of nutritional deficiencies inherent in the prolonged use of oligoantigenic diets not adequately supplemented.

Plasma and breast milk adipokines in women across the first year postpartum and their association with maternal depressive symptoms and infant neurodevelopment: Protocol for the APPLE prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Adiponectin and leptin play important roles in the central nervous system. During the postpartum period, there is a need for a better understanding of the relationship between these cytokines and the neurological development of the infant, as well as their influence on preventing maternal depressive symptoms. OBJECTIVES: To assess the correlation between adiponectin and leptin in maternal plasma and breast milk and their association with: infant neurodevelopment at 6 and 12 months of age; and maternal mental health over the first year postpartum. METHODS: Prospective cohort stu

Non-IgE antibody mediated mechanisms in food allergy.

Food sensitivity or intolerance is not necessarily based on the Type I allergic reaction. Non-IgE antibody reactions, complement-dependent reactions, enzyme deficiencies such as lactase and non-immunologic histamine release (such as with some sea foods) have been described. Even the detection of specific antibodies on their own does not necessarily indicate that a given symptom is due to that antibody. Food allergy nevertheless exists. It is important that those observers fortunate enough to see many cases document their observations carefully and eventually publish them for the education of t

Exclusive Breastfeeding and Vitamin D Supplementation: A Positive Synergistic Effect on Prevention of Childhood Infections?

Human milk is the best food for infants. Breastfeeding has been associated with a reduced risk of viral and bacterial infections. Breast milk contains the perfect amount of nutrients needed to promote infant growth, except for vitamin D. Vitamin D is crucial for calcium metabolism and bone health, and it also has extra-skeletal actions, involving innate and adaptive immunity. As exclusive breastfeeding is a risk factor for vitamin D deficiency, infants should be supplemented with vitamin D at least during the first year. The promotion of breastfeeding and vitamin D supplementation represents a

New Opportunities for Breastfeeding Promotion and Support in WIC: Review of WIC Food Packages, Improving Balance and Choice.

Although breastfeeding (BF) is the recommended way to feed infants, this may be difficult for the low-income women served by the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). The 2017 recommended revisions to the WIC food packages provide substantial support to both exclusively and partially BF dyads, remove barriers to partial BF choices within the first 30 days postpartum, and increase flexibility in determining the amount of formula offered to partially breastfed infants. When combined with adequate support and tailored counseling, these changes are intended

[Could whey be responsible for the development of cow's milk allergy in newborns and infants?].

Cow's milk allergy is the most common type of food allergy in infants. Most infants develop symptoms one week after initiating the feeding of cow's milk based formulas though sensitisation in utero and via mother's milk are also possible. We report on three newborns who received whey baths after birth and developed allergic skin reactions. Cow's milk allergy was diagnosed. In our opinion the whey baths could be responsible for the sensitisation via skin and the allergic skin reactions. The risks and benefits of whey baths for newborns and infants should therefore be carefully considered.

Assessment of maternal diet inflammatory status and inflammatory markers in human breast milk.

Human breast milk is a complex bioactive fluid containing multi-functional components that support many infant physiological functions. Maternal diet has been demonstrated to influence human milk components; however, how maternal diet impacts inflammatory markers in human milk remains unclear. This study investigated the association between maternal dietary inflammatory status, assessed using the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), and the profile of inflammatory markers in breast milk from healthy lactating women, quantified using cytometric bead array. Dietary intake of lactating mothers (n =

The ACVD task force on canine atopic dermatitis (X): is there a relationship between canine atopic dermatitis and cutaneous adverse food reactions?

In humans, allergies to foods are known to induce skin lesions in some patients with atopic dermatitis. This is particularly evident in infants with severe atopic dermatitis. Food allergy in humans is an IgE-mediated hypersensitivity in most cases, and thus has the same (or very similar) pathogenic mechanism of disease induction as environmental allergen-induced atopic dermatitis. Cutaneous adverse food reactions and atopic dermatitis in dogs are often indistinguishable from each other on historical and clinical grounds alone. Limited current evidence suggests that dogs with cutaneous adverse

Quantification of Chlorate and Perchlorate in a Broad Range of Food Commodities, Including Baby Food, Nutritional Formulas, and Ingredients by LC-MS/MS: First Action AOAC 2022.06.

BACKGROUND: Chlorate is an effective herbicide, but also a byproduct of chlorinating agents used to disinfect water, which is one of the reasons why it is regularly found in food. Perchlorate is a ubiquitous contaminant, which is naturally occurring in the environment but also released from anthropogenic sources such as the industrial use of certain natural fertilizers. Chlorate affects the hematological system, and perchlorate the thyroid. OBJECTIVE: Implement and validate a simple and robust analytical method for the accurate determination of chlorate and perchlorate in baby food, infant an

Colorimetric enzymatic rapid test for the determination of atropine in baby food using a smartphone.

A method for the enzymatic determination of atropine has been developed, which is based on a sequence of reactions involving (1) the hydrolysis of atropine to give tropine; (2) the enzymatic oxidation of tropine with NAD (catalysed by tropinone reductase); and (3) an indicator reaction, in which the NADH previously formed reduces the dye iodonitrotetrazolium chloride (INT) to a reddish species, the reaction catalysed by diaphorase. The method was first developed in solution (linear response range from 2.4 × 10-6 M to 1.0 × 10-4 M). It was then implemented in cellulose platforms to develop a ra
