Entomological efficacy of durable wall lining with reduced wall surface coverage for strengthening visceral leishmaniasis vector control in Bangladesh, India and Nepal.

BACKGROUND: New methods for controlling sand fly are highly desired by the Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) elimination program of Bangladesh, India and Nepal for its consolidation and maintenance phases. To support the program we investigated safety, efficacy and cost of Durable Wall Lining to control sand fly. METHODS: This multicentre randomized controlled study in Bangladesh, India and Nepal included randomized two intervention clusters and one control cluster. Each cluster had 50 households except full wall surface coverage (DWL-FWSC) cluster in Nepal which had 46 households. Ten of 50 househ

Effects of environmental factors and storage conditions on the performance of Olyset® Plus against sand flies in WHO cone bioassays.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis, visceral and cutaneous, is seen in Turkey and has both public and veterinary importance. So far, four Leishmania species and their vectors have been detected in Turkey. Vector control is essential in endemic areas and several personal protection methods are available including long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). In this study, we aimed to measure the effects of usage and storage conditions on LLINs in a village-scale study. METHODS: Olyset(®) Plus bed nets were set up in different climatic conditions (rain, exposed to sunlight and humidity) and collected after 6

[Institutional insertion of Chagas' disease control].

After the starting of the Center for studies and prophylaxis of Chagas disease in 1943, with the help of Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, in the city of Bambuí, state of Minas Gerais, technological and methodological basis for the extensive control of the disease were conceived. A main step to achieve success was the introduction of a new insecticide (gammexane, P 530) and the demonstration of its efficacy in the vector control. A consequence of these improvements was the official inauguration of the first prophylactic campaign for Chagas disease in Brazil, held in Uberaba in May, 1950. Even with the

A multimodal bait for trapping blood-sucking arthropods.

Artificial baits constitute important tools for the detection and sampling of blood-sucking arthropods, in particular those that are vectors of parasites affecting human health. At present, many different devices have been proposed to attract blood-sucking arthropods, mostly based on the attractiveness of particular chemicals or blends. However, most of them revealed themselves as unpractical (e.g. they require an electrical supply), expensive (e.g. gas bottles) or not efficient enough. On the other hand, the use of living baits is as effective but it has practical constraints and/or raises et

Field evaluation of Olyset nets: a long-lasting insecticidal net against malaria vectors Anopheles culicifacies and Anopheles fluviatilis in a hyperendemic tribal area of Orissa, India.

A village-scale trial was conducted on the efficacy of Olyset nets: a long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) factory treated with 2% wt:wt permethrin against malaria vectors Anopheles culicifacies Giles and Anopheles fluviatilis James, in Sundargarh District, Orissa, India. The study area comprised 22 villages that were randomized into three clusters and designated as Olyset net, untreated net, and no net clusters. Baseline studies showed that both vector species were 100% susceptible to permethrin. Results of wash resistance and bioefficacy of Olyset nets showed 100% mortality in An. culicifaci

Current situation of Chagas disease in Central America.

Chagas disease in Central America is known since 1913 when the first human case was reported in El Salvador. The other Central American countries reported their first cases between 1933 and 1967. On October 1997 was launched the Central American Initiative for Chagas Disease Control (IPCA). The objectives of this sub-regional Initiative are: (1) the elimination of Rhodnius prolixus in Central America; (2) the reduction of the domiciliary infestation of Triatoma dimidiata; and (3) the elimination of the transfusion transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi. Significant advancements being close to the e

Predicted distribution and movement of Glossina palpalis palpalis (Diptera: Glossinidae) in the wet and dry seasons in the Kogo trypanosomiasis focus (Equatorial Guinea).

The aim of this study was to predict the distribution and movement of populations of the tsetse fly, Glossina palpalis palpalis (Diptera: Glossinidae), in the wet and dry seasons and to analyze the impact of the use of mono-pyramidal traps on fly populations in the Kogo focus in 2004 and 2005. Three Glossina species are present in Kogo: Glossina palpalis palpalis, major HAT vector in West-Central Africa, Glossina caliginea, and Glossina tabaniformis. The apparent density (AD) of G. p. palpalis clearly fell from 1.23 tsetse/trap/day in July 2004 to 0.27 in December 2005. A significant reduction

Activity of Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis and L. longipalpis s.l. (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Venezuela.

The nocturnal activity of the phlebotomine sandfly Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis and two populations of L. longipalpis s.l. from different American visceral leishmaniasis foci in Venezuela was studied using collection bottle rotator traps. The activity of L. pseudolongipalpis from Lara State was continuous throughout the night, while that of L. longipalpis s.l. from El Layero, Guárico State and from Santa Ana del Valle, Margarita Island, was greatest before 23:00 h. The activity of sandflies of both populations and sexes steadily decreased thereafter. These different patterns seem to correlate w

Japanese encephalitis in India: an overview.

Japanese encephalitis (JE)-epidemics have been reported in many parts of the country. The incidence has been reported to be high among pediatric group with high mortality. The incidence of JE in recent times is showing an increasing trend. It appears that JE may become one of the major public health problems in India, considering the quantum of the vulnerable pediatric population, the proportion of JEV infections among the encephalitic children and wide scattering of JE-prone areas. JE burden can be estimated satisfactorily to some extend by strengthening diagnostic facilities for JE confirmat

Importance of migrants infected with Onchocerca volvulus in west African river valleys protected by 14 to 15 years of Simulium control.

A study was done to determine the importance of human migration from non-controlled endemic onchocerciasis foci to the river valleys that have been protected for the past 14 to 15 years by the vector control operations of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa. The aim of the study was to assess the contribution of migrants to the prevalence and intensity of infection in villages from 5 major river valleys and their potential role in causing relapse of transmission once the vector is allowed to return. In Burkina Faso the migrant population varied from 0.0% to 18.1% of the village

Impact of permethrin-treated bednets on malaria transmission by the Anopheles gambiae complex in The Gambia.

Malaria vector mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles gambiae complex were studied in four hamlets in The Gambia. All inhabitants were given bednets treated either with a placebo (milk) in two hamlets or with the pyrethroid insecticide permethrin (500 mg/m2) in two other hamlets. Malaria transmission occurred mainly during a few weeks of the rainy season, in September and October 1987. The indoor resting densities of mosquitoes in permethrin-treated hamlets were reduced, and we estimated over 90% reduction in biting on man by An. gambiae Giles sensu stricto in these hamlets. No mosquitoes were

[Modification of the behavior of Glossina palpalis palpalis linked to the swine fever epizootic of 1982 in a Congolese village].

A swine fever epizootic decimated the pig herds in villages within the Yamba focus of human trypanosomiasis. Ecological studies of Glossina palpalis palpalis populations were carried out in one of the villages for four years following the disappearance of the pigs, which had been the principal nutritive host of the Glossina in the area. One important behavioural modification occurred, namely the establishment of a small peridomestic tsetse population. The flies deserted the patches of residual forest to settle around the periphery of the village. This probably occurred in numerous other villag

Assessment of Surface Sterilisation Approaches for the Removal of Pollen DNA from Philaenus spumarius.

Dietary analysis of herbivorous insects relies on successfully eliminating surface contamination. If this cannot be performed reliably, then it will not be possible to differentiate between plants that the insect is feeding on and plants the insect has been in contact with, either directly or via pollen. Methods in the literature often use bleach and alcohol washes to remove contamination. We perform a controlled metabarcoding baseline study on a herbivorous, xylem-feeding insect, the Meadow Spittlebug (Philaenus spumarius), using Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing, and identify pos

Droplet superpropulsion in an energetically constrained insect.

Food consumption and waste elimination are vital functions for living systems. Although how feeding impacts animal form and function has been studied for more than a century since Darwin, how its obligate partner, excretion, controls and constrains animal behavior, size, and energetics remains largely unexplored. Here we study millimeter-scale sharpshooter insects (Cicadellidae) that feed exclusively on a plant's xylem sap, a nutrient-deficit source (95% water). To eliminate their high-volume excreta, these insects exploit droplet superpropulsion, a phenomenon in which an elastic projectile ca

A Novel Insect Overwintering Strategy: The Case of Mealybugs.

Insects have limited ability to regulate their body temperature and have thus required a range of strategies to withstand thermally stressful environments. Under unfavorable winter conditions, insects often take refuge under the soil surface to survive. Here, the mealybug insect family was selected for the study. Field experiments were performed in fruit orchards in eastern Spain. We used specifically designed floor sampling methods combined with fruit tree canopy pheromone traps. We found that in temperate climates, the large majority of the mealybugs move from the tree canopy to the roots du

Identification of carmine allergens among three carmine allergy patients.

BACKGROUND: There have been several reports of carmine allergy; however, identification of the responsible carmine allergens has not been widely documented. METHODS: Three female patients presented with a history of anaphylaxis and/or urticaria/angioedema after ingestion of carmine-containing foods. All three patients had 4+ skin prick tests to carmine. Among them, two patients were confirmed to have carmine allergy by blinded, placebo-controlled food challenges to carmine. miR-318 regulates juvenile hormone biosynthesis to control ovarian development in Bactrocera dorsalis.

Reproduction is a fundamental process in the insect life cycle, with the ovary serving as the central organ governing oogenesis and fertility. Hormonal homeostasis, particularly juvenile hormone (JH) regulation, is critical for proper ovarian development. Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) is a globally invasive agricultural insect pest characterized by high reproductive capacity. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are key post-transcriptional regulators of diverse biological processes, yet their roles in insect ovarian development remain incompletely understood. Here, we identify miR-318 as an ovary-enriched miRNA

Herbivore-induced rice resistance against rice blast mediated by salicylic acid.

In agro-ecosystems, plants are important mediators of interactions between their associated herbivorous insects and microbes, and any change in plants induced by one species may lead to cascading effects on interactions with other species. Often, such effects are regulated by phytohormones such as jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA). Here, we investigated the tripartite interactions among rice plants, three insect herbivores (Chilo suppressalis, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis or Nilaparvata lugens), and the causal agent of rice blast disease, the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae. We found that pre-i
