Electroconvulsive Therapy in Canada During the First Wave of COVID-19: Results of the "What Happened" National Survey.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the provision of essential and potentially life-saving procedural treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). We surveyed ECT providers across Canada to understand how the first wave of the pandemic affected ECT delivery between mid-March 2020 and mid-May 2020. METHODS: The survey was administered to ECT team members and decision makers at 107 Canadian health care centers with a focus on 5 domains: operations, decision-making, hospital resources, ECT procedure, and patient impact. Responses were obtained from 72 institutions, and collect

Head and neck cancer in the UK: what is expected of cytopathology?

This review highlights the role of cytopathology in cancer management within UK Head and Neck Cancer Networks and informs on the issues raised by recent UK Department of Health documents and other UK professional guidance. UK guidance requires the formal involvement of cytopathologists within multidisciplinary cancer teams, with medical and non-medical cytopathology staff setting up and running rapid access lump clinics, and support for image-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) services. UK guidance also makes recommendations for training, resources and quality control. This review a

Heart transplant nutrition programs: a national survey.

Cardiac cachexia and nutritional inadequacies have been cited as risk factors for poor outcome after heart transplantation. To evaluate the current status of nutritional support programs for heart transplant patients, we conducted a national survey of major transplant centers. Surveys were sent to 26 institutions, with 20 hospitals responding to the written questionnaire and providing samples of educational material from their nutrition programs. Although 80% of the hospitals surveyed included a dietitian as a member of the nutritional support team, dietitians participated in only 50% of the p

Current AATS guidelines on surgical treatment of infective endocarditis.

The 2016 American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) guidelines for surgical treatment of infective endocarditis (IE) are question based and address questions of specific relevance to cardiac surgeons. Clinical scenarios in IE are often complex, requiring prompt diagnosis, early institution of antibiotics, and decision-making related to complications, including risk of embolism and timing of surgery when indicated. The importance of an early, multispecialty team approach to patients with IE is emphasized. Management issues are divided into groups of questions related to indications for an

Critical Care of Neuromuscular Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Weakness is a common reason patients are seen in neurologic consultation. This article reviews the differential diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders in the intensive care unit (ICU), discusses the intensive care needs and evaluation of respiratory failure in patients with neuromuscular disorders, and provides a practical guide for management. RECENT FINDINGS: Although primary neuromuscular disorders used to be the most common cause for weakness from peripheral nervous system disease in the ICU, a shift toward ICU-acquired weakness is observed in today's clinical practice. Case report: Acute pancreatitis in lung adenocarcinoma with small cell transformation after multiple line targeted therapy.

In lung cancer, metastasis to the liver, bones, brain, and adrenal glands is more commonly observed, whereas pancreatic metastasis from lung cancer is relatively rare. We present a case of a patient with an 8-year history of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) who was admitted to our institution exhibiting symptoms consistent with acute pancreatitis. Subsequent histopathological examination through puncture confirmed the occurrence of pancreatic metastasis originating from small cell lung cancer (SCLC). During a multidisciplinary team discussion, we reached a consensus in diagnosing the patient with po

Multidisciplinary Approach to Venous Disease: Enhancing Patient Care and Trainee Education Through Collaboration.

The full spectrum of venous disease poses a significant burden on individuals and health-care systems globally. Venous disease can lead to a wide range of symptoms based on the level of disease and underlying pathology. In general, underlying pathologies are due to nonthrombotic (reflux/obstructive) and thrombotic causes. Most conditions are a sequela of the long-term effects of chronic venous insufficiency, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or nonthrombotic deep vein obstruction. The prevalence of venous disease is substantial, impacting the quality of life of a considerable proportion of the adult

Q-vaxcelerate: A distributed development approach for a new Coxiella burnetii vaccine.

Development of vaccines that are both safe and effective remains a costly and time-consuming challenge. To accelerate the pace of development and improve the efficacy and safety of candidate vaccines for both existing and emerging infectious agents, we have used a distributed development approach. This features the managed integration of individual expert groups having the requisite vaccine platforms, pre-clinical models, assays, skills and knowledge pertinent to a specific pathogen into a single, end-to-end development team capable of producing a new vaccine tailored to that particular agent.
