Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with a variety of clinically important extrahepatic abnormalities. We have assessed the prevalence of cryoglobulinemia and of the clinical syndrome associated with it in patients with chronic HCV infection. A 26-year-old male patient being treated with alpha-interferon for chronic hepatitis C developed psoriasis, seronegative oligoarthritis and sacroiliitis after four months. The close temporal relationship between the alpha-interferon therapy and the onset of skin and articular lesions strongly suggests that the drug played a role in the induction of the disease despite the absence of HLA antigens related to psoriatic arthritis. We cannot exclude the possibility that immunological alterations associated with HCV infection could have constituted a predisposing factor in the onset of the disease.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the combination of systemically administered interferon alpha-2a and ablative surgery for the treatment of genital and/or perianal warts produces a 30% or greater improvement in lasting response rate compared with a control group receiving a combination of placebo and ablative therapy.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The incidence of hepatitis C infection is increased in subjects with human immunodeficiency virus infection, although the relative frequency of hepatitis b infection is higher than that hepatitis c. Fifty-five patients with metastatic carcinoid tumor were treated with the long-acting somatostatin analogue octreotide. Nineteen received in addition alpha-interferon when octreotide had failed. During octreotide treatment reduced flush and/or diarrhea was seen in 70% of the patients, 37% showed > 50% decrease in urinary 5-HIAA for a median of 8 months. Human lymphoblastoid interferon-alpha was administered intramuscularly at a dose of 5 x 10(6) units/day to 20 metastatic renal cell carcinoma patients. For potentiating the antitumor effect of interferon, cimetidine was also given to them orally at a dose of 800 mg/day. Eighty-two patients with either mycosis fungoides (MF) or parapsoriasis en plaques were treated with psoralens ultraviolet A light (PUVA). Clinical and histologic parameters were followed for a period from 6 months to 10 years. Complete clinical clearing of lesions was observed in 51 patients (62%) and most of them were in limited-plaque MF group or parapsoriasis en plaque. We conducted a multicenter double-blind study comparing human recombinant intralesional alpha-2 interferon (IFN) and placebo in 237 patients with the clinical diagnosis of condyloma acuminatum or verruca plantaris.
