One-year outcome of unexplained fatigue syndromes in primary care: results from an international study.

BACKGROUND: Outcome studies of chronic fatigue, neurasthenia and other unexplained fatigue syndromes are few and have been carried out in developed Western countries. This paper aimed to study the outcome of unexplained fatigue syndromes in an international primary care sample and to identify risk factors for persistence. METHOD: We used data from the WHO collaborative study of psychological problems in general health care, in which 3201 primary care attenders from 14 countries were followed-up for 12 months. The assessment included a modified version of the Composite International Diagnostic

Chronic fatigue in primary care attenders.

From 686 patients attending primary care physicians, 77 were identified by a screening procedure as having chronic fatigue. Of these, 65 were given a comprehensive psychological, social and physical evaluation. Seventeen cases (26%) met criteria for the chronic fatigue syndrome. Forty-seven (72%) received an ICD-9 diagnosis of whom 23 had neurotic depression, with a further 5 meeting criteria for neurasthenia. Forty-nine were 'cases' as defined by the revised Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS-R), and 42 if the fatigue item was excluded. Psychiatric morbidity was more related to levels of social

Adverse life events and cognition in older adults: the role of gender and psychological resilience.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined gender differences in the association between stressful life events and late-life cognition, with psychological resilience as a potential moderating factor. METHODS: Longitudinal data were drawn from a population-based sample of 1,815 participants (Mage = 70.71, SDage = 1.50, 48% women). Stressful life events were indicated by both the number of recent life events in the past 6 months measured by the List of Threatening Events Questionnaire and lifetime traumatic experiences captured by questions from the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Cognitive

Mediators in the Association Between Affective Temperaments and Suicide Risk Among Psychiatric Inpatients.

BACKGROUND: Affective temperaments have been shown to be related to psychiatric disorders and suicidal behaviors. Less is known about the potential contributory role of affective temperaments on suicide risk factors. In the present study, we investigated whether the effect of affective temperaments on suicide risk was mediated by other variables, such as hopelessness, mentalization deficits, dissociation, psychological pain, and depressive symptoms. METHODS: Several assessment instruments, including the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI); the Temperament Evaluation of Memphi

Exploring the Illness Perceptions of Patients With Urostomy Based on the Common-Sense Model of Self-Regulation: A Descriptive Qualitative Study.

Illness perceptions play a significant role in coping and self-management behaviors adopted by patients when facing health threats. To understand the illness perceptions of patients with urostomy, we conducted a descriptive qualitative study. An interview guide was formed based on the common-sense model of self-regulation(CSM), and 19 patients with urostomy were recruited through maximum variation purposive sampling for in-depth semi-structured interviews between January 2024 and June 2024. Five themes emerged from the analysis of the interview data through the thematic analysis method: (1) be

Neuropsychological differential diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury.

The diagnosis and evaluation of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is reviewed from the perspective of meta-analyses of neuropsychological outcome, showing full recovery from a single, uncomplicated mTBI by 90 days post-trauma. Persons with history of complicated mTBI characterized by day-of-injury computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities, and those who have suffered prior mTBIs may or may not show evidence of complete recovery similar to that experienced by persons suffering a single, uncomplicated mTBI. Persistent post-concussion syndrome (PCS) is considered as a somat

The present study aimed at analysing the correlation of aspects of BID with psychopathological and temperamental characteristics. METHOD: A sample of 1288 patients (538 AN and 750 BN) were assessed through a structured diagnostic interview, the Eating Disorders Inventory and Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire. Dyspareunia and vulvar disease.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the presence and frequency of contributing factors in functional dyspareunia and if these factors differ between patients with an epithelial disorder and those with apparently healthy genitalia. Delivering low-intensity psychological interventions in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review and meta-ethnographic synthesis of lay health workers' experiences.

Task-sharing psychological treatment to non-specialist providers, including lay health workers (LHWs), is central to WHO guidance in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). LHWs are community members without formal mental health qualifications who are trained to deliver low-intensity psychological interventions (LIPIs) for depression and anxiety. Although trials show LHW-delivered LIPIs can reduce symptoms, less is known about LHWs' experiences or the relational and emotional demands of delivery. This review synthesised qualitative evidence on LHWs' experiences of delivering LIPIs in LMICs.

Economic and psycho-social stressors associated with unintentional injuries during COVID-19 in South Africa.

The COVID-19 pandemic strained global health systems and disrupted daily life. In South Africa, where unintentional injury rates are high, lockdown measures introduced stressors such as confinement, financial hardship and psychological strain that may have increased injury risk. This study examined how adherence to stay-at-home restrictions, financial stress and psychological distress during South Africa's COVID-19 lockdown were associated with reports of household members being injured and requiring medical treatment. Data were drawn from a province-stratified computer-assisted telephone inte

Music therapy and Sanfilippo syndrome: an analysis of psychological and physiological variables of three case studies.

INTRODUCTION: Mucopolysaccharidosis type III (MPS III) or Sanfilippo syndrome is a neurodegenerative disease caused by the accumulation of mucopolysaccharides in the body. As the symptoms are wide ranging, it is a challenge to provide a diagnosis and psychological treatment for affected children. METHOD: The main objective of this study was to describe a form of music therapy treatment applied to three children diagnosed with MPS III. The psychological variables were evaluated by an ad hoc observation recording template, and the physiological variables were measured with a digital meter befor

Associations Between Emotion Dysregulation Dimensions and Parenting Behaviors in Trauma-Exposed African American Mothers.

Parenting behavior is key to understanding transmission of intergenerational trauma-related risk. Emotion dysregulation (ED) and psychological symptoms are associated with negative parenting behaviors, although their unique roles remain unclear. The current study examined associations of ED dimensions, depression, PTSD, and substance use with parenting behaviors in African American mothers. Participants included 98 mother-child dyads recruited from an urban hospital setting. Trauma exposure, ED, depression, substance use, and parenting behaviors (overreactivity, laxness, demandingness, warmth,
