Use of sodium monoiodoacetate to fuse the distal hock joints in horses.

Intra-articular injection of sodium monoiodoacetate (MIA) was investigated as an agent for chemical arthrodesis of the distal hock joints in the horse. Five horses diagnosed with either spavin (three horses), a small tarsal bone fracture or a failed surgical arthrodesis, had 150 mg of MIA injected into the tarsometatarsal (TMT) joint of the affected hock(s). Eight joints were treated in the five horses. Follow-up evaluation by clinical and radiological examination took place over 9 to 14 months. Two of the five horses were sound at the conclusion of the study and one horse, although lame after…

Disk position before and after modified condylotomy in 80 symptomatic temporomandibular joints.

OBJECTIVE: Our primary objective was to determine the frequency of disk reduction after modified condylotomy and whether the type of displacement affected outcome. DESIGN: We classified reducing disk displacements from magnetic resonance images of 80 symptomatic temporomandibular joints before modified condylotomy. Disk position was reassessed after surgery. RESULTS: The disk and condyle typically move in reciprocal directions. The disk was reduced by surgery in 79% of the joints. The rate of reduction varied by the type of displacement, but the differences between the groups were not statis…

Numerical scoring systems for the progression of osteoarthritis of the finger joints.

We developed methods to assess and to score progression of osteoarthritis (OA) of the distal and proximal interphalangeal (DIP and PIP) and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) finger joints. Thirty-six patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the finger joints were followed for five years. Anteroposterior radiographs of the hands were obtained at the start of this prospective study and at yearly intervals. The scoring systems used were based on: -1- the increase in incidence of OA during consecutive years in previously normal joints. -2- the radiological progression of the anatomical lesions (changes in ost…

[Stress-related clinical and ultrasound changes in shoulder joints of handball players].

This prospective clinical and ultrasound study was performed to show specific overuse injuries or changes in the periarticular structures of shoulder joints. Therefore, 11 male handball players with an average age of 23 years and 6 months were evaluated via a standardised shoulder exam sheet and an ultrasound examination before, one hour after, 10-12 hours after, 16-20 hours after and 22-24 hours after specific handball training. Characteristic changes were found in respect of bursitis subacromialis and tendinitis of biceps tendon up to 16-20 hours after training, which were fully reversible 2…

A limited, low-dose computed tomography protocol to examine the sacroiliac joints.

Limited, low-dose, three-scan computed tomography (CT) was shown to be as accurate as a complete CT series in examining the sacroiliac joints and is suggested as an effective alternative to plain radiography as the primary means to detect sacroiliitis. The advantages include the brevity of the examination, a 2-fold to 4-fold reduction in radiation exposure relative to conventional radiography and a 20-fold to 30-fold reduction relative to a full CT series. The technique was developed from studies of anatomic specimens in which the articular surfaces were covered with a film of barium to show c…

[Value of MRI in the visualization of the meniscus in temporomandibular joints].

Modern imaging techniques, among which nuclear magnetic resonance currently ranks first, have made it much easier to understand the internal disorders of the temporomandibular joint. While computed tomography still is the ideal technique for all bony affections in the articular region, especially for injuries. MRI now is an essential first-intention complementary examination. It allows assessing the location of the meniscus and very well defines the pathology being explored: reducible or irreducible dislocation of the meniscus, either purely anterior or anterolateral, the latter being better v

Staphylococcal arthritis--effects of superoxide dismutase on infected knee joints of rabbits.

The effect of SOD on staphylococcal arthritis has not been successfully evaluated to date. We developed an animal model to investigate the correlation. Using 16 rabbits divided into four groups, we injected two groups with staphylococcus aureus and the other two with NaCl. One group in each was also injected with SOD. The presence of SOD activity in untreated and infected knee joints of rabbits over a period of 72 hours showed no significant difference. TBA-reactive substances (TBARS) measured in joint fluid and plasma did differ in each of the groups, with the highest values found in animals …

Absorption of labeled triethanolamine salicylate in human and canine knee joints. II.

The transdermal absorption by tissues of salicylate from triethanolamine salicylate (TEA/S) ointment applied to canine and human skin was shown to be consistent, significant, and reproducible. Salicylate levels were measured using thin-layer chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, and radiochemistry. Absorption was directly proportional to the concentrations of the active ingredient in the ointment up to the 10 per cent preparation. Tissue salicylate levels were not influenced by the sex of the canine subjects. In humans, the activity of the patients affected both tissue levels and urinary

Resection arthroplasty with Swanson's implant for posttraumatic stiffness of proximal interphalangeal joints.

Proximal interphalangeal joint resection arthroplasty with Swanson's implant should be considered as a simplified new hinge joint with a simplified shorter but isometric extensor system which will work if the flexor system is intact. The procedure is indicated in cases of severe, ill-tolerated, fixed joint contractures. Functional improvement with restoration of some range of motion can be expected. Patients should be aware that they will not regain a complete range of motion at the PIP joint, there will be limited involvement of the distal interphalangeal joint, and there may be some discomfo

Simultaneous dislocation of the interphalangeal and metacarpo-phalangeal joints in a thumb.

Dislocation of more than one joint in a digit is a rare injury. Although several case studies have appeared describing multiple interphalangeal dislocations in fingers (Ikpeme, 1977; Nathan, 1973 and Weseley, 1978), no report of interphalangeal and metacarpo-phalangeal dislocations in the same thumb has been published.

[Cause of arthritis in childhood. Relation to age, sex and affected joints].

In a retrospective study (1963--1976) out of 514 children with the general diagnosis of arthritis, the diagnoses most frequently established … frequent feature in the other cases. It is concluded that age of onset, number and site of affected joints, as well as evolution time may be useful in the diagnosis.

Simultaneous arthrography of the talocrural and talonavicular joints in children. I. Technique.

A method is described by which simultaneous arthrography of the talocrural and talonavicular joints is performed on neonates and small infants with a high degree of success and a very low risk of complications. From films exposed in exact, standardized projections, valuable and highly reproducible information is obtained about the configuration of the talus, the shapes and mutual relationships of the joint surfaces, and any obliteration of the recesses. One disadvantage of the method is the need for general anaesthesia.

[The presence of fluorescein-conjugated antibodies in synovial tissues of rheumatic joints].

With a modified Coons technique synovial tissue, anti human IgG, IgA, IgM, anti-coeruloplasmine, anti-transferrin, and anti-fibrin were investigated by means of immunofluorescence and evaluated with reference to place, type, and intensity of fluorescence. It was shown that fibrin deposits in the synovial tissue in rheumatoid synovitis do not only consist of the actual fibrin but often of immune complexes. These were mainly found near vessels and necroses, whereas unspecific fibrin was detected mainly in fibers and limiting areas. Coeruloplasmine and transferrin seem to have a marked affinity t
