Developing vaccine stabilizers from local natural sources is desirable especially if the stabilizer would enhance the ability of the antigen to withstand frequent failures in cold chains. The study was undertaken to formulate immunogenic live Newcastle Disease (ND) LaSota vaccines stabilized with modified native starches for use at cold and ambient temperatures and to assess the immunogenicity of the starch stabilized vaccines in vaccinated chickens. Native starch extracted from the tubers of Plectranthus esculentus (Family, Lamiaceae) was modified by carboxymethylation and acetylation/xerogel

The rationale inspiring the discovery of lead compounds for the treatment of human parasitic protozoan diseases from natural sources is the well-established use of medicinal plants in various systems of traditional medicine. On this basis, we decided to select an overlooked medicinal plant growing in central Italy, Marrubium incanum Desr. (Lamiaceae), which has been used as a traditional remedy against protozoan diseases, and to investigate its potential against Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT). For this purpose, we assayed three extracts of different polarities obtained from the aerial par

Although there are several effective drugs available for the treatment of intestinal helminths, the fact remains that they continue to remain out of reach to a vast majority of people in the world, especially in developing countries. On the other hand, there are a great many herbal remedies that are effective against common intestinal worms and are easily available to common people in developing countries. Clerodendrum colebrookianum Walp. (Lamiaceae) is a perennial shrub which is native to South and Southeast Asia. Traditionally, the leaves of this plant are used by the indigenous people of N

Bovine mastitis is a prevalent and economically significant disease in dairy cattle, leading to reduced milk production and quality. Staphylococcus aureus is a major causative agent of bovine mastitis, often complicating treatment due to its ability to develop antibiotic resistance. This resistance is frequently mediated by efflux pumps, such as the NorA pump. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of Zataria multiflora essential oil (EO) to inhibit biofilm formation and disrupt the NorA efflux pump in ciprofloxacin-resistant S. aureus isolates from bovine mastitis. The plant EO

We studied the effect of aqueous extract of Prunella vulgaris (Labiatae) (PVAE) on immediate-type allergic reactions. PVAE (0.005 to 1 g/kg) dose-dependently inhibited systemic anaphylactic shock induced by compound 48/ 80 in rats. When PVAE was given as pretreatment, at concentrations ranging from 0.005 to 1 g/kg, the serum histamine levels induced by compound 48/ 80 were reduced in a dose-dependent manner. PVAE (0.001 to 1 g/kg) inhibited the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis activated by anti-dinitrophenyl (DNP) IgE antibody dose dependently. PVAE also inhibited the histamine release induced by

We examined the protective effect of pogostone (PO), a chemical constituent isolated from Pogostemonis Herba, on the ethanol-induced gastric ulcer in rats. Administration of PO at doses of 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg body weight prior to ethanol ingestion effectively protected the stomach from ulceration. The gastric lesions were significantly ameliorated by all doses of PO as compared to the vehicle group. Pre-treatment with PO prevented the oxidative damage and the decrease of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) content. In addition, PO pretreatment markedly increased the mucosa levels of glutathione (GSH), sup
