Knee bracing is commonly used for rehabilitation after ligament surgery. However, the effectiveness of knee bracing in preventing ligament injuries is not widely studied. This study aimed to develop a computational methodology to investigate the effectiveness of a novel type of cable-stabilized knee brace on anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) strain during single-leg jump landing. The brace features a compliant design with nonextensible pretensioned cables integrated within a compression tight garment. A combined in vivo/in silico method was developed for this purpose. A computational model of t

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Unstable pelvic ring injuries often occur in high energy traumas. Vertical sacrum fracture is an associated injury. This report describes a late spinal nerve compression that occurred following surgical reduction and fixation of pelvic ring injuries caused by traumatic L5-S1 disc herniation and malposition of the sacral fracture.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old female presented with radiculopathy in her right leg after surgical reduction and fixation of a sacral and pelvic fracture. Physical examination revealed numbness and weakness of the right leg. Radiographi

Elite athletes are subject to injuries like the Achilles tendon rupture. This injury requires a long recovery process, with no guarantee of returning to the pre-injury level. When a rupture happens during natural life, movement analysis can provide useful insights concerning patterns of rupture to understand and prevent Achilles tendon injuries. Here we determined the pattern of rupture of an Achilles tendon (AT) in an elite high-jumper athlete who ruptured an AT during the straight line running phase in preparation for a high-jump attempt. This study is a novel case report regarding a nationa

Little research has described the long-term health outcomes of patients who had combat-related amputations or leg-threatening injuries. We conducted retrospective analysis of Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs health data for lower extremity combat-injured patients with (1) unilateral amputation within 90 days postinjury (early amputation, n = 440), (2) unilateral amputation more than 90 days postinjury (late amputation, n = 78), or (3) leg-threatening injuries without amputation (limb salvage, n = 107). Patient medical records were analyzed for four years postinjury. Aft

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common, and children as young as 10 years of age exhibit movement patterns associated with an ACL injury risk. Prevention programs have been shown to reduce injury rates, but the mechanisms behind these programs are largely unknown. Few studies have investigated biomechanical changes after injury prevention programs in children. Purpose/Hypothesis: To investigate the effects of the F-MARC 11+ injury prevention warm-up program on changes to biomechanical risk factors for an ACL injury in preadolescent female soccer players. We hypothesiz

BACKGROUND: Significant resources are spent on assessment of the abdomen in motor vehicle crash (MVC) occupants based solely upon crash mechanism. Most have no clinically significant injuries. We sought to define crash and occupant characteristics that would be associated with a low probability of clinically significant abdominal injury.
METHODS: Drivers in MVCs were analyzed from the National Automotive Sampling System from 1993 to 2001. The probability of abdominal injury with an Abbreviated Injury Score > 1 was measured over a range of crash velocities controlling for other covariates usin

We present a case of a successful bilateral leg replantation in a 3-month-old baby after a knee-level crush amputation with the loss of both knee joints. The legs were replanted after 4 hours of warm and an additional 2.5 and 3.5 hours of cold ischemia time. Both legs show motor and sensory reinnervation, without additional procedures performed on the right leg, and after a nerve reconstruction with cadaveric allografts on the left leg. Both replanted legs exhibit excellent bony and soft tissue growth. Two years after the injury, the patient is progressing well with rehabilitation, with favour

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether motion-control shoes reduce the risk of pronation-related injuries in recreational runners.
DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial of the effect of shoes on running injuries.
METHODS: Three hundred seventy-two recreational runners were randomized to receive either standard neutral or motion-control shoes and were followed up for 6 months regarding running activity and injury. Running injuries that occurred during this period were registered and classified as pronation-related injuries (Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciopathy, exercise

Gastrocnemius muscle ruptures are frequent in both recreational and competitive athletes. The superficial posterior compartment of the leg includes the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles, and a tear can occur in either one of them or both. Gastrocnemius injuries usually occur in young adult male athletes in their 40s. Moreover, they are common in sport involving eccentric lower extremity movements such as football, basketball, and tennis. Injuries are more common in athletes who have not warmed up adequately or are fatigued. The diagnosis is based on the patient's history and physical examinatio

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in badminton commonly occur during single-leg landing after an overhead stroke in the backhand-side court. This study compared differences in trunk acceleration and kinematic variables during single-leg landing in the forehand- and backhand-side courts after an overhead stroke. Eighteen female junior badminton players performed two singles games while wearing a tri-axial accelerometer. The moment that over 4g of resultant acceleration was generated was determined using synchronised video cameras. Trunk lateral inclination and hip abduction angles at th

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of rehabilitation programmes are often distorted by the athlete's desire to return and can result in injury recurrence. Athletic assessments allow for objective and reliable measurements to track rehabilitation progress. This case study used a multi-component assessment strategy to assess a rugby player's lower-extremity strength and symmetry as a primary determinate of their return-to-sport status.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A professional rugby league player was assessed for lower-extremity isokinetic strength and sprint kinetics pre- and 10-weeks post-rehabilitation pr

UNLABELLED: Backround: Knee trauma with arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI) lead to muscle weakness. The aim of this study was to analyse the intensity of AMI after meniscus and cartilage injuries and to investigate the association between age, BMI and severity of cartilage leasions with AMI.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 48 patients with meniscus or cartilage injury were preoperatively interviewed and examined for isometric maximum force values of the extension muscles of the knee joints. We analysed AMI as comparison of maximum isometric force values between healthy and injured leg by use of Wilcox

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the pattern of electrodiagnostic (EDX) abnormalities in diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathies.
METHODS: EDX data from 112 consecutive patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with distal, predominantly sensory, polyneuropathies were reviewed. Motor conduction velocities (CV), distal motor latencies (DML), compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitudes, distal to proximal amplitude ratios (PID), and F-wave latencies (FWL) were analyzed. Data were normalized based on normative reference values, and the proportion of nerves with abnormal values in the lower and

OBJECTIVE: Lower leg injury risk is commonly assessed using an anthropomorphic test device (ATD). The current standard leg (the HIII) has been shown to have low biofidelity due to its geometry and material properties. A new surrogate (the MIL-Lx) was developed to address these issues, specifically for anti-vehicular mine blast scenarios but with potential applications to high-force crashes in the automotive industry. Before it is adopted for use, the MIL-Lx must be evaluated under impact loading to ensure that it represents the natural lower leg response.
METHODS: Axial impact loads were appl

Peripheral nerve injuries during sports-related operative interventions are rare complications, but the associated morbidity can be substantial. Early diagnosis, efficient and effective evaluation, and appropriate management are crucial to maximizing the prognosis, and a clear and structured algorithm is therefore required. We describe the surgical conditions and interventions that are commonly associated with intraoperative peripheral nerve injuries. In addition, we review the common postoperative presentations of patients with these injuries as well as the anatomic structures that are direct

PURPOSE: Limb amputation and death are devastating sequelae of acute compartment syndrome (ACS), and have been posited to result either from the initial injury burden or from pathophysiologic sequelae, such as rhabdomyolysis leading to acute renal failure. We aimed to test the hypothesis that severity of trauma is associated with limb amputation and death in patients with traumatic leg ACS.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 302 patients with ACS of 302 legs treated with fasciotomies from 2000 to 2015 at two tertiary trauma centers. Our response variables were death and limb amputation duri

There is an inherent risk of injury in male youth football; however, pertinent risk factors for injury have yet to be examined. This study used a prospective cohort design with 357 elite male youth football players (aged 10-18 years) assessed during the preseason period and then monitored during the season recording all non-contact lower extremity injuries. Screening tests included single leg hop for distance (SLHD); 75% of maximum hop and stick (75%Hop); single leg countermovement jump (SLCMJ); and the tuck jump assessment (TJ). Players were divided into subgroups based on chronological age.

UNLABELLED: Prone positioning affords significant benefits for the fixation of trimalleolar ankle fractures and has been the long-time standard for treatment of these injuries. However, 2 primary disadvantages hamper its utility. First, access to the medial ankle is impeded by the contralateral limb and inability to rotate the operative leg to the extent that is possible in other positions. Second, lateral fluoroscopic imaging of the ankle can be cumbersome and often necessitates physically elevating the ankle for a radiograph then placing it back on the operative table. We describe a simple a

Five recent examples of the cross-leg flap are presented. Its applications and design have been altered and its versatility widened by using muscle. In all cases the use of a Hoffmann apparatus facilitated not only fixation of the flap but also patient comfort, since ropes attached to side-arm rods can be put over pulleys and weights attached to take the strain off potential pressure points. The technetium scan was helpful in determining when flap division should be done. Flaps were rarely in place more than three weeks before division: often, especially in children, division is possible by tw

This article will review the anatomy and common pathologies affecting the peroneus longus muscle and tendon. The anatomy of the peroneus longus is complex and its long course can result in symptomatology referable to the lower leg, ankle, hindfoot, and plantar foot. Proximally, the peroneus longus muscle lies within the lateral compartment of the lower leg with its distal myotendinous junction arising just above the level of the ankle. The distal peroneus longus tendon has a long course and makes two sharp turns at the lateral ankle and hindfoot before inserting at the medial plantar foot. A s
