[Statistical analysis of Marfan's syndrome].

To evaluate the ocular complications of Marfan's syndrome which cause severe visual disturbance, we retrospectively investigated 104 patients (208 eyes) with Marfan's syndrome. Dislocation of the lens, the most frequent ocular manifestation, was detected in 151 eyes (72.6%). There were 33 eyes with a visual acuity 0.1 or less. In this group, we found retinal detachment in 12 eyes (36.4%) and glaucoma in 5 eyes (15.2%) as the causes of visual disturbance. Among 17 eyes with retinal detachment, 5 eyes (29.4%) had horizontally dislocated lens. On the other hand. The lens dislocation in a downward

Intraocular endoscopy for the evaluation and treatment of hypotony due to a traumatic cyclodialysis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: A cyclodialysis cleft often leads to direct communication between the anterior chamber and the suprachoroidal space. It is a rare condition that is encountered with blunt trauma, and less commonly, after surgery. Hypotony is the major sequelae that may lead to hypotonous maculopathy, optic disc edema, corneal folds, and astigmatism. These may cumulatively lead to visual loss. We describe how endoscopy in a cyclodialysis repair allowed us to accurately locate the cleft and guided its appropriate management avoiding unnecessary cryopexy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old male experie

Zonular fibre Insertion-to-Limbus Distance (ZLD): normative data to assess lens position and diagnose ectopia lentis.

PURPOSE: Subluxation of the crystalline lens (Ectopia Lentis, EL) can lead to significant visual impairment and serves as a diagnostic criterion for genetic disorders such as the Marfan syndrome. There is no established criterion to diagnose and quantify EL. We prospectively investigated the distance between the zonular fibre insertion and the limbus (ZLD) in healthy subjects as a parameter to assess the position of the lens, quantify EL and provide normative data. METHODS: This prospective, observational, cross-sectional study includes one-hundred-fifty eyes of 150 healthy participants (mean

A New Technique with Scleral Grooves for Sutureless Scleral Fixation of the Carlevale Intraocular Lens.

INTRODUCTION: A novel technique is described employing scleral grooves to facilitate sutureless scleral fixation of the Carlevale intraocular lens (CIL). We describe its use in a series of 47 patients with aphakia. METHODS: A retrospective study of all patients with aphakia who underwent CIL implantation with the new technique by a single surgeon during 1 year. The novelty of this technique consists in the creation of two partial-thickness linear sclerotomies (grooves), 180° apart, 2 mm from and parallel to the limbus. In the middle of each groove a full-thickness sclerotomy is performed to f

Blindness from misuse of over-the-counter eye medications.

Blindness from misuse of over-the-counter (OTC) eye drop preparations is reported. This is a previously unreported category of visual loss. Four eyes were blinded in three patients who used OTC preparations when they suffered angle-closure glaucoma. Another eye suffered a reduction in vision from 20/20 to 20/200 when the patient treated a subluxed lens implant with OTC preparations for three months. The motivating factors for self treatment by individuals are discussed. These include advertising, lack of education, and a desire to reduce the cost of health care. Since the common OTC eye drops
