Interplay of anxiety, depression, vascular function, and biomarkers in post-myocardial infarction patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of mortality. Depression and anxiety are common in CAD patients and negatively affect quality of life, physical functioning, and adherence to cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs. This study aimed to identify possible associations with clinically relevant parameters, vascular function and blood biomarkers. METHODS: Participants were consecutively recruited during cardiac rehabilitation intake visits at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana within 4 months of myocardial infarction (MI). Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scal

Association of adiponectin level and obstructive sleep apnea prevalence in obese subjects.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is prevalent in obese subjects. Plasma adiponectin level in obese subjects is decreased. Whether reduced adiponectin level is associated with OSA is unknown. Participants without a previous diagnosis of OSA or who have not been treated with continuous positive airway pressure were enrolled and parameters of interest were collected. Polysomnography was performed to evaluate the presence of OSA and the severity of OSA as indexed by the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Between-group differences were analyzed. Pearson correlation analysis was used to evaluate the associati

[Consensus document on healthy lifestyles].

Proteins are a group of macronutrients that are vital to our lives, as they perform various functions, including structural, defensive and catalytic. An intake of 1.0-1.2 g/kg/body weight per day would be sufficient to meet our needs. Carbohydrate requirements constitute 50 % of the total caloric value and should be obtained mainly in the form of complex carbohydrates. In addition, a daily intake of both soluble and insoluble fiber is necessary. Regular consumption of extra virgin olive oil is an effective strategy for the prevention of cardiovascular, metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases.

Distribution and correlations of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in Roma and Caucasian children: the Slovak Lipid Community Study.

Non-high-density lipoprotein (non-HDL) cholesterol [total cholesterol minus high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol] is considered a better predictor of coronary heart disease (CHD) risk than low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. The Slovak Roma population have approximately 2.5-fold higher premature CHD mortality than the overall population. It is agreed that detection of dyslipidemia and prevention of atherosclerosis by controlling CHD risk factors should begin in childhood. However, only limited population-based data are available for non-HDL cholesterol in children. Hence the aim o

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy for Closed Surgical Wounds in Musculoskeletal Oncology Patients - A Case-Control Trial.

UNLABELLED: Following excision of musculoskeletal tumours, patients are at high risk of wound issues such as infection, dehiscence and delayed healing. This is due to a multitude of factors including the invasive nature of the disease, extensive soft tissue dissection, disruption to blood and lymphatic drainage, residual cavity and adjuvant therapies. The use of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has a growing body of evidence on its beneficial effect of wound healing such as promoting cell differentiation, minimising oedema and thermoregulation. Traditionally, these dressings have been us

Seronegative End-Stage Type I Achalasia With Megaesophagus in a Middle-Aged Woman From Central America: A Case Report.

Achalasia is a primary esophageal motility disorder defined by impaired lower esophageal sphincter relaxation and absent peristalsis. Late-stage disease can lead to megaesophagus, a severe dilation and tortuosity of the esophageal body. While most cases are idiopathic, secondary achalasia can be caused by Chagas disease (Trypanosoma cruzi infection), an important consideration in patients from endemic regions of Central and South America. Our case highlights a 51-year-old female from Nicaragua who presented to the emergency department with an acute onset of shortness of breath. A computed tomo
