BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In 20%-30% of cholecystectomised patients a biliary syndrome (called Post-Cholecystectomy Syndrome: PCES) reappears after some weeks or months. Two cases of silica stones, without previous oral intake of magnesium trisilicate, are reported. A 64-year-old Japanese woman had bilateral renal stones. Infrared spectrophotoscopy revealed that one of the fragments consisted of silicate and the others consisted of calcium oxalate. A 75-year-old woman had right renal stones. The composition of 1 stone was a mixture of silicate and unspecified matrices. Silicate urolithiasis may not necessarily be related to oral intake of silicate-containing antacids.

This case report describes a patient who ingested magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) for approximately four days as a treatment for pregnancy-induced hypertension. Stage II lactogenesis was delayed until the tenth postpartum day at which point the patient's breasts became fully engorged. No explanation for this delay was found, other than the possibility that magnesium sulfate treatment impeded lactogenesis. Implications for professionals who care for lactating women are discussed.

Plasma magnesium (Mg) levels were estimated in 15 schizophrenic, 10 depressed, 6 manic and 6 presenile Alzheimer's disease patients and compared with those in 303 healthy controls.
