Bone pathology and parathyroid gland activity in hypocalcemic magnesium-deficient chicks.

Growing chicks fed magnesium-deficient (150 ppm Mg) diets for 14 or 21 days developed significant hypomagnesemia and hypocalcemia compared to control chicks fed 1,000 ppm Mg. The hypocalcemia was accompanied by significant parathyroid gland hyperactivity, suggesting that magnesium deficiency did not impair parathyroid gland function. Despite parathyroid gland hyperactivity, however, bone resorption was decreased in the magnesium-deficient chicks, although bone formation was not affected by magnesium depletion. The decrease in bone resorption in the magnesium-deficient chicks was correlated wit…

Effect of magnesium deficiency on rat bone and kidney sensitivity to parathyroid hormone.

A series of six experiments was conducted to investigate the effects of Mg deficiency in the young rat on parathyroid hormone (PTH) activity and on response to parathyroid extract (PTE) and to endogenously produced PTH stimulated by dietary Ca deficiency. Major criteria employed were 45Ca release from pre-labeled bone and urinary excretion of cAMP. Mg deficiency was accompanied by lowered 45Ca mobilization and urinary cAMP excretion, indicating either a depression in PTH secretion or tissue insensitivity to it. Administration of PTE resulted in equivalent increases in 45Ca mobilization irrespe

[Control of glycolysis in magnesium deficiency: studies on intact red cells and hemolysates].

The behaviour of glycolytic flux and glycolytic metabolic concentrations was studied under conditions of magnesium deficiency. The Mg-deficiency was produced in whole animals (rats) by feeding a diet almost completely free of Mg and in hemolysates of men by the addition of a chelating agent. The results show that the decrease of the free Mg-level is diminished by partial destruction of ATP and 2,3-DPG. The analysis of the control strength of the overall flux leads to the conclusion that the decrease of the glycolytic rate is caused by an inhibition of the hexokinase-phosphofructokinase-control…

Effects of magnesium deficiency and thyroparathyroidectomy on calcium active transport by rat duodenum.

Mg deficiency was produced in rats by feeding a Mg-free diet. Ten days of dietary Mg depletion led to an increase in active duodenal Ca absorption in sham-operated animals, but this increase was abolished by thyroparathyroidectomy (TPTX). In addition, TPTX reduced Ca absorption in control aminals fed a Mg-containing diet. More prolonged Mg deficiency was produced by feeding sham-operated animals the Mg-free diet for 19 days. This condition resulted in more marked hypomagnesemia and a depression of Ca transport rates to the level observed in the TPTX groups. These results are consistent with th

Chromosomal abnormalities in maternal and fetal tissues of magnesium- or zinc-deficient rats.

The effect of dietary deficiency during pregnancy of zinc or magnesium on maternal and fetal chromosomes was studied. Pregnant rats were given a zinc-deficient or a magnesium-deficient diet from the beginning of pregnancy and maternal bone marrow and fetal liver were removed on day 19 of gestation. Chromosome spreads were prepared and metaphases examined for abnormalities. Both magnesium- and zinc-deficient maternal bone-marrow and fetal liver cells showed significantly more chromosomal abnormalities than did those of controls. The chromosomal aberrations occurring in highest incidence in magn

Potentiation of magnesium-deficiency-induced foetotoxicity by concomitant iron deficiency and its prevention by adequate supply via drinking water.

Magnesium (Mg) and iron (Fe) deficiency frequently develop during pregnancy. Therefore these factors were studied alone (Mg-L, resp. Fe-L) or in combination (Mg-L/Fe-L) on 16 female and 8 male adult fertile Sprague-Dawley rats. The animals were offered a basal diet containing 30 per cent and 17 per cent of the rat's requirement for magnesium and iron, respectively, starting 21 days before mating (2:1) until 49 days after mating. Offspring were also kept on this regimen during a 3-week lactation period and 7 days post weaning. Drinking water was either enriched with 101 ppm Fe2+ (ferrous glucon

Magnesium Deficiency Disrupts Blood Glucose Homeostasis in a Time-of-Day-Dependent Manner.

Magnesium deficiency (MgD) disrupts numerous physiological processes, yet its specific impact on in vivo glucose homeostasis remains unclear. This study investigated the longitudinal effects of MgD on blood glucose dynamics in freely moving rats using continuous glucose monitoring. Animals were maintained on a 2-3-week MgD or Control diet under two conditions: access to standard drinking water or a 10% glucose solution. Under standard drinking water conditions, MgD rats exhibited significantly lower mean blood glucose levels specifically during the quiescent day phase, although nonlinear fluct…
