Young breast cancer: A single center experience.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer in women aged less than 35 years is uncommon and accounts for 1-2% of all breast cancer in the West. There is a paucity of data on young breast cancer from India. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical, pathological, prognostic factors and outcome in young breast cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This analysis was performed in 251 patients aged <35 years or less (defined as breast cancer in the young), who were registered at our institute over an 11 year period between 2001 and 2011. RESULTS: The median age was 31 years (range 18-35). Positive famil

Long-term morbidity of axillary lymph node dissection: implications for patients with carcinoma breast.

BACKGROUND: To assess the long term complications of level II Axillary Lymph Node Dissection (AXLND) in patients with breast cancer and to see if they are high enough to warrant a Sentinel Lymph Node (SLN) biopsy in all patients presenting with carcinoma breast in our setup in Pakistan. METHODS: This study was conducted at Surgical Unit IV, Department of Surgery, Combined Military Hospital, Rawalpindi. Upper, lower arm circumferences and body mass index were ascertained in post Modified Radical Mastectomy (MRM) with level II AXLND, in female patients who had undergone surgeries from 1992 to 2

Predictors of arm morbidity following breast cancer surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Arm morbidity post-breast cancer surgery is increasingly being recognized as a chronic problem for some women following breast cancer surgery. The purpose of this study was to examine demographic, disease, and treatment-related predictors of a comprehensive array of chronic arm morbidity (pain, lymphedema, functional disability, and range of motion) post-breast cancer surgery. METHODS: Women (n=316) with a non-metastatic primary diagnosis of breast cancer were accrued from cancer centers in four Canadian cities. Patients completed a clinical assessment and measures of arm morbidity

A case of radiation retinopathy of left eye after radiation therapy of right brain metastasis.

A 37-year-old female, who had received modified radical mastectomy for cancer of her right breast, presented with decreased visual acuity in the left eye after radiation therapy for the management of the metastasis to her right brain 14 months ago. After ocular examination, we diagnosed her as radiation retinopathy. At the time of the first visit, the corrected best visual acuity was 0.4 in the left eye, and fundus examination revealed cotton wool spots and cystoid macular edema (CME). The findings in the right eye were normal except for cotton wool spots in the superior major arch. Fluorescei

[Locating the sentinel node in breast cancer by gamma probe and staining agent. Preliminary study].

OBJECTIVE: The sentinel node biopsy appears to offer an alternative to routine axillary lymph node dissection for staging patients with breast cancer. Various techniques have been studied for identifying the sentinel node, using vital blue or radioactive colloid. This study aimed to evaluate our preliminary results with these techniques. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this work carried out in the Valencian Institute of Oncology, 21 women with T1- T2 breast cancer with an average age of 52 years (range: 42-73) underwent the sentinel node biopsy, which was immediately followed by standard axillary di

Sites of failure in breast cancer patients with extracapsular invasion of axillary lymph node metastases. No need for axillary irradiation?!

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Extracapsular spread (ECS) is frequent, but the specific sites of relapse are seldom given in the literature. In this study it was evaluated, if ECS might be an indicator for axillary irradiation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: After a retrospective review of pathology reports, the information about ECS was available in 254 lymph node-positive patients: ECS was absent in 34% (ECS-negative; n = 87) and present in 66% (ECS-positive; n = 167). All patients were irradiated locally, 78 patients got periclavicular and 74 axillary irradiation (median total dose: 50.4 Gy). 240/254 pati

Case Report: Synchronous double primary male breast cancer and non-small cell lung cancer: diagnostic confirmation and multidisciplinary management.

BACKGROUND: Male breast cancer (MBC) is rare, accounting for approximately 1% of all breast cancers. When MBC is diagnosed simultaneously with a second primary lung cancer, treatment planning becomes particularly complex because diagnostic certainty, technical resectability, competing treatment windows, and radiotherapy safety must all be considered. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 72-year-old man who was synchronously diagnosed with left invasive ductal breast carcinoma and right lower lobe poorly differentiated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The breast cancer was staged as pT3N2aM0, AJC

Treatment and Outcomes of Women With Large Locally Advanced Breast Cancer.

Advances in breast cancer research have made breast cancer a treatable disease. However, there is a population of women who present with large, advanced, or sometimes neglected breast cancers who can prove difficult to treat. These women often require multiple modality treatment including chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. The purpose of our study is to examine the treatment and outcomes on women with large, locally advanced breast cancers (LABCs). We identified 8 individuals who presented with LABCs requiring extensive treatment. Patients with inflammatory or metastatic cancer at the time

Heart transplantation in patients with treated breast carcinoma.

Since 1987, five women with end-stage cardiomyopathy and a history of treated breast carcinoma have undergone transplantation at our institution. All patients underwent extensive multidisciplinary pretransplantation evaluation to rule out metastatic disease. Disease-free interval before heart transplantation ranged from 5 to 11 years (mean, 7.6 years). All patients received immunosuppression in accordance with a standard protocol of rabbit antithymocyte globulin, cyclosporine, prednisone, and azathioprine. Mean postoperative follow-up is 49 months. All patients are alive and have no symptoms 1

Effective Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair for Reverse Remodeling in Cancer Therapy-Related Cardiac Dysfunction.

Cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) is an emerging disease. As there is no specific treatment for CTRCD, the standard therapy for cardiac failure is typically administered. In patients with heart failure and severe secondary mitral regurgitation, transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) of the mitral valve reduces hospitalization for heart failure and all-cause mortality. However, the effectiveness of TEER in the treatment of patients with CTRCD remains unclear. A 47-year-old woman with severe heart failure was admitted to our hospital. She had a history of a modified radical ma

Case Report: Advanced breast invasive ductal carcinoma with erysipeloid cutaneous metastasis misdiagnosed as erysipelas.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer has become the second most common cancer after lung cancer. Patients may present with skin manifestations at the time of initial diagnosis, while erysipel-like carcinoma typically appears later, following initial treatment. This delay increases the risk of misdiagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 51-year-old female. A modified radical mastectomy for left breast carcinoma (pT2N3M0, stage IIIC; tumor size 4.6 cm × 4.5 cm × 1.6 cm, 14/21 axillary lymph nodes involved), HER2-positive type, was performed on April 21, 2021. Poland syndrome combined with breast cancer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome is an occasional congenital malformation characterized by unilateral chest wall dysplasia and ipsilateral upper limb abnormalities. An association between Poland syndrome and breast cancer has been reported, but no clear etiological link between Poland syndrome and breast tumors has been established. We report a case of Poland syndrome combined with breast cancer and analyzed the clinical features of breast cancer in this case and its influence on the choice of treatment for breast cancer. CASE DESCRIPTION: In February 2022, we admitted a 47-year-old woman with Pol

Prophylactic Buried Dermal Flap: A Simple Method for Axillary Reconstruction after Lymph Node Dissection.

Breast cancer-related lymphedema is characterized by progressive limb enlargement and occurs in up to 30% of breast cancer patients following axillary lymph node dissection (ALND). Immediate lymphatic reconstruction (ILR) is a preventative technique used to reduce lymphedema rates by performing lymphovenous anastomoses of disrupted afferent lymphatics. This study presents a novel method of axillary reconstruction following ALND using a buried dermal flap that provides local tissue with intact subdermal lymphatics to the axillary dead space. A single-center retrospective review was performed to

Infiltrative solid papillary carcinoma of the breast with axillary lymph node metastasis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Solid papillary carcinoma (SPC) is a rare breast papillary tumor variant. The main histological features of SPC consist of neoplastic cell-rich nodules with thin fibrovascular cores, often accompanied by mucous secretion and neuroendocrine differentiation. Infiltrative solid papillary carcinoma (ISPC) tumor cells have an invasive, map-like growth pattern with serrated irregular growth. Due to its unique clinicopathological features, SPC is classified as two pathological tissue types based on the 2019 WHO classification of breast tumors: SPC in situ and ISPC. CASE PRESENTATION: We
