Maternal VD3 supplementation during gestation improves intestinal health and microbial composition of weaning piglets.

Vitamin D3 (VD3) has been reported to improve the reproductive performance of sows. This study was conducted to investigate the long-term effect of maternal VD3 supplementation during gestation on the intestinal health of piglets. Twenty-three Landrace × Yorkshire gilts were randomly allocated into two groups to receive one of the following two diets during gestation: basal diet (CON group, 800 IU VD3 per kg diet, n = 12) and VD3 supplemented diet (VD3 group, 2000 IU VD3 per kg diet, n = 11). All sows were then fed with the same diet during lactation. Results showed that maternal VD3 supplemen

Recent Incarceration Exposure Among Parents of Live-Born Infants and Maternal and Child Health.

OBJECTIVE: Women who have direct exposure to incarceration or indirect exposure through their partner are at high risk for poor health behaviors and outcomes, which may have lasting impacts on their children. The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of recent incarceration exposure among women with a recent live birth and assess the relationship between incarceration exposure and maternal and child health. METHODS: We used data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (36 states and New York City, 2012-2015; N = 146 329) to estimate the prevalence of women repo

Effects of Elevated Maternal Adiposity on Offspring Reproductive Health: A Perspective From Epidemiologic Studies.

One in seven couples in developed countries suffers from infertility. Maternal overweight or obesity have detrimental and lasting effects on offspring cardiometabolic health, and although substantially more data are needed, hormonal imbalances in utero resulting from excessive maternal adiposity could also disrupt reproductive programming and affect the future reproductive health of offspring. Therefore, this mini-review evaluates the human epidemiologic evidence that maternal overweight/obesity could be associated with poor reproductive health outcomes in offspring. We searched PubMed for rel

Acute hepatic porphyria and maternal health: Clinical and biochemical follow-up of 44 pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy in women with acute hepatic porphyria (AHP) has historically been associated with significant morbidity. Clinical outcomes have been the focus of previous reports on porphyria and maternal health, with little data available on the levels of heme precursors during pregnancy. We present the results of a follow-up program for women with AHP in the Swedish cohort who were pregnant between 2001 and 2020. METHODS: Thirty-three women with AHP were monitored during 44 pregnancies resulting in 44 single births. Seven of 33 women had a clinical history of acute attacks that requir…

Intimate partner violence and maternal health services utilization: evidence from 36 National Household Surveys.

BACKGROUND: High rates of maternal mortality and intimate partner violence (IPV) are both major worldwide health challenges. Evidence from single-country samples suggests that IPV may be an important risk factor for low utilization of maternal health services, but there is little large-scale evidence on this association. This paper evaluates whether IPV is a risk factor for low utilization of maternal health services in a large cross-country sample, and also compiles evidence on the relative effects of different forms of IPV. METHODS: We analyze the association between intimate partner violen…

Maternal and Cord Blood Metabolite Associations with Gestational Weight Gain and Pregnancy Health Outcomes.

Pre-pregnancy obesity and excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) are risk factors for future maternal and childhood obesity. Maternal obesity is potentially communicated to the fetus in part by the metabolome, altering the child's metabolic program in early development. Fasting maternal blood samples from 37 singleton pregnancies at 25-28 weeks of gestation were obtained from mothers with pre-pregnancy body mass indexes (BMIs) between 18 and 40 kg/m2. Various health measures including GWG, diet, and physical activity were also assessed. At term (37-42 weeks), a venous umbilical cord sample wa

Using Electronic Health Record and Administrative Data to Analyze Maternal and Neonatal Delivery Complications.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric quality of care measures have largely focused on severe maternal morbidity (SMM), with little consensus about measures of less severe but more prevalent delivery and neonatal complications. This study analyzes risk-adjusted maternal and neonatal outcomes using both ICD-10 coding and electronic health record (EHR) data. METHODS: Complication rates at seven health system hospitals from January 2016 to August 2019 were analyzed. EHR data and ICD-10 codes were used to identify the incidence of SMM as well as other route-specific maternal and neonatal complications. Researche

Maternal mental health and internalizing and externalizing psychopathology in extremely low birth weight adults.

The mental health of adult extremely low birth weight (ELBW) (<1000 g) survivors is poorer than their normal birth weight (NBW) peers. An understanding of the modifiable factors that affect this risk could provide targets for intervention. We set out to determine the extent to which a maternal history of mental health problems influenced mental health in ELBW and NBW offspring in adulthood. A total of 85 ELBW and 88 NBW individuals born between 1977 and 1982 in central west Ontario, Canada self-reported on internalizing (depression, anxiety) and externalizing (attention-deficit hyperactivity a

Conditions and Dynamics That Impact Maternal Health Literacy among High Risk Prenatal-Interconceptional Women.

The purpose of the study was to describe conditions and dynamics in the lives of high-risk, low-income, Southern United States prenatal-interconceptional women (n = 37) in a home visiting program that promoted maternal health literacy progression. In the Life Course Health Development (LCHD) Model, conditions were risk and protective factors that impacted health. Dynamics drove the complex, epigenetic relationships between risk and protective factors. Maternal health literacy promotion helped participants address conditions and dynamics to create positive life changes. This research was a retr…

Intimate partner violence and utilization of maternal health care services in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Despite its prominence, intimate partner violence (IPV) against women has received little attention in Ethiopia. And as many of sub-Saharan African countries, maternal health care services utilization remains poor. Full access and utilization of maternal health care services is a key to significant reduction in maternal and child mortality, and eliminate new HIV infection in infants. Identifying the factors that contribute to the poor access and utilization should aid the design of appropriate policy and intervention strategies. Thus the objective of this study was to examine the a…

Maternal pre-gravid cardiometabolic health and infant birthweight: A prospective pre-conception cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Both low birthweight and high birthweight have been associated with the development of cardiometabolic disease in adulthood, possibly reflecting the effect of intrauterine fetal programming. As developmental programming can begin before conception, pre-gravid factors that predict birthweight may be relevant in this context. However, little is known about such factors. Thus, we established a pre-conception cohort to identify maternal pre-gravid cardiometabolic determinants of infant birthweight. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this prospective observational cohort study, 1484 newl

Noninvasive prenatal testing for aneuploidy using cell-free DNA - New implications for maternal health.

The rapid global uptake of noninvasive prenatal testing for Down syndrome based on maternal plasma cell-free DNA has provided new data on the interrelationship between cell-free DNA and maternal health. Specific maternal conditions that can affect the performance of noninvasive prenatal testing include obesity, active autoimmune disease and low molecular weight heparin treatment. There is also a growing appreciation of the implications of discordant noninvasive prenatal testing results for maternal health, including unexpected diagnoses of maternal chromosomal conditions, or rarely, occult can…

Maternal dietary intake during pregnancy has longstanding consequences for the health of her offspring.

Over the past 100 years, advances in pharmaceutical and medical technology have reduced the burden of communicable disease, and our appreciation of the mechanisms underlying the development of noncommunicable disease has broadened. During this time, a number of studies, both in humans and animal models, have highlighted the importance of maintaining an optimal diet during pregnancy. In particular, a number of studies support the hypothesis that suboptimal maternal protein and fat intake during pregnancy can have long-term effects on the growing fetus, and increase the likelihood of these offsp

Maternal mortality in health institutions with emergency obstetric care facilities in Enugu State, Nigeria.

In order to assess the current level of maternal mortality in health institutions with comprehensive emergency obstetric care in Enugu State, South Eastern Nigeria, a retrospective analysis of maternal deaths for the years 1999-2003 was carried out to establish the maternal mortality ratios in the eligible health institutions. Each maternal death was studied in detail to establish the socio-demographic characteristics of the women who died; their referral sources, type of delay (if any), medical causes of death and their preventability. In-depth interviews of the service providers were carried
