Preventing Pregnancy-Related Mental Health Deaths: Insights From 14 US Maternal Mortality Review Committees, 2008-17.

Each year approximately 700 people die in the United States from pregnancy-related complications. We describe the characteristics of pregnancy-related deaths due to mental health conditions, including substance use disorders, and identify opportunities for prevention based on recommendations from fourteen state Maternal Mortality Review Committees (MMRCs) from the period 2008-17. Among 421 pregnancy-related deaths with an MMRC-determined underlying cause of death, 11 percent were due to mental health conditions. Pregnancy-related mental health deaths were more likely than deaths from other cau…

The Effect of Socioeconomic Status on All-Cause Maternal Mortality: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study.

Improving maternal health is one of the 13 targets of Sustainable Development Goal 3; consequently, preventing maternal death, which usually occurs in women's prime productive years, is an important issue that needs to be addressed immediately. This study examines the association between socioeconomic status and all-cause maternal mortality in South Korea and provides evidence of preventable risk factors for maternal death. For this population-based retrospective cohort study, data on 3,334,663 nulliparous women were extracted from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database between …

Maternal age at birth and neonatal mortality: Associations from 67 low-income and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Both young and advanced maternal age have been associated with higher risks of neonatal mortality, but most studies are from high-income countries and the evidence from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is scarce. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between maternal age at delivery and neonatal mortality in LMICs. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study using data from 159 Demographic and Health Surveys in 67 LMICs between 2000 and 2018. Maternal age at the time of the birth was the exposure variable, and neonatal mortality was the outcome. Multivariable logistic re

Improving US maternal mortality reporting by analyzing literal text on death certificates, United States, 2016-2017.

Changes in data collection and processing of US maternal mortality data across states over time have led to inconsistencies in maternal death reporting. Our purpose was to identify possible misclassification of maternal deaths and to apply alternative coding methods to improve specificity of maternal causes. We analyzed 2016-2017 US vital statistics mortality data with cause-of-death literals (actual words written on the death certificate) added. We developed an alternative coding strategy to code the "primary cause of death" defined as the most likely cause that led to death. We recoded death…

A Low-Cost, Community Knowledge Approach to Estimate Maternal and Jaundice-Associated Mortality in Rural Bangladesh.

In the absence of a civil registration system, a house-to-house survey is often used to estimate cause-specific mortality in low- and middle-income countries. However, house-to-house surveys are resource and time intensive. We applied a low-cost community knowledge approach to identify maternal deaths from any cause and jaundice-associated deaths among persons aged ≥ 14 years, and stillbirths and neonatal deaths in mothers with jaundice during pregnancy in five rural communities in Bangladesh. We estimated the method's sensitivity and cost savings compared with a house-to-house survey. In the

Maternal HIV status associated with under-five mortality in rural Northern Malawi: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Under-five mortality is decreasing but with little change in neonatal mortality rates. We examined the effect of maternal HIV status on under-five mortality and cause of death since widespread availability of antiretroviral therapy in rural Malawi. METHODS: Children born in 2006-2011 in the Karonga demographic surveillance area were included. Maternal HIV status was available from HIV serosurveys. Age-specific mortality rate ratios for children born to HIV-positive and HIV-negative mothers were obtained by fitting a Poisson model accounting for child clustering by mother and adjus

[Maternal mortality and severe morbidity in 3 French regions: results of MOMS, a European multicenter investigation].

Maternal mortality rates vary between different European countries. One hypothesis put forward to explain such differences is the potential discrepancy in the incidence of the main obstetrical complications. A European concerted action designed to estimate the incidence of severe post partum hemorrhage (> 1.5 l), PET, and sepsis was carried out in 1995-96 (MOMS-B survey) using standardized definitions and the same questionnaire in all regions. In the 13 regions in Europe involved in the study, including Champagne-Ardenne, Center and Lorraine in France, 1843 cases of obstetrical complication we…

Equity-focused investment strategies to reduce maternal mortality in the Philippines: a subnational analysis using EQUIST.

BACKGROUND: Despite sustained national progress in maternal and child health, maternal mortality in the Philippines remains uneven across regions and socioeconomic groups. Women in poor, rural, and conflict-affected areas experience substantially higher maternal mortality than those in higher-income and urban populations. We aimed to assess subnational inequities in maternal mortality and estimate the potential impact and cost-effectiveness of prioritised maternal health interventions in Philippine regions with maternal mortality ratios exceeding the national benchmark. METHODS: We conducted …

The hidden dangers of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis: insights into maternal morbidity and mortality during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare but potentially fatal neurological emergency during pregnancy and the puerperium. Data on its prognosis in early pregnancy and the risk of recurrence in subsequent pregnancies remain limited, particularly in Chinese populations. This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with the occurrence and prognosis of pregnancy-associated CVST and to evaluate the outcomes of subsequent pregnancies in affected women. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-control study at a tertiary referral center in China from January 2010 to J

Psychosocial impact of maternal mortality on bereaved families and health care providers: what do we know?

INTRODUCTION: Maternal mortality remains a critical global health issue with profound psychosocial consequences that extend beyond the deceased woman to her family and the healthcare professionals (HCP) involved in her care. While substantial progress has been made in reducing maternal mortality worldwide, its social and psychological sequelae remain insufficiently studied, particularly in high-income countries. METHODS: This narrative review is based on a structured literature search conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar for studies published between 2000 and 2025. Study selection was guide…
