Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are one of the most complex and rare neoplasms that have been discovered, with varying behavior i … lly. In this case report, we will review the case of a 40-year-old woman with an unusual IMT in the maxillary sinus that presented as a challenge in diagnosis and management.

Objective To study the imaging characteristics of maxillary sinus effusion in drowned bodies, to explore its morphological characteristics and value in the diagnosis of the cause of death, and to provide objective evidence to support the study of virtual anatomy of drowning. Methods The 154 postmortem CT examination cases (31 cases of drowning, 123 cases of non-drowning) of Beijing Public Security Bureau Forensic Center in 2019 were collected. The bodies of all cases were scanned by multi-layer spiral CT before double-blind reading by clinical imaging experts. Maxillary sinus of corpses with m…

Spontaneous fracture of the maxillary sinus without preceding trauma or pathology is extremely rare. Our patient presented with a maxillary sinus fracture related to recurrent nose-blowing, in the absence of any other cause. Although rare, spontaneous fracture of maxillary sinus should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pain and swelling of the cheek and eye in elderly patients.

Ameloblastoma is a rare, benign (99%) or malignant (1%) tumour, which has derived from dental mesenchyme. We present a case of a patient mainly complaining about obstruction on the right nasal cavity. Endoscopy and computed tomography revealed a soft tissue mass occupying the maxillary sinus to the middle meatus causing complete obstruction of the right nasal cavity. Endoscopic en block removal of the lesion and biopsy confirmed follicular ameloblastoma. Literature review confirms the extremely rare frequency of ameloblastoma. The aim of the present study is to expand on our knowledge of a rar…

BACKGROUND: Epitheliod hemandioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare vascular tumor which was first reported by Weiss and Enzinger in 1982. It can be seen in many locations whose paranasal sinus is extremly rare. Its main treatment is surgery. To our best knowledge, no report of EHE treated by radiation therapy and chemotherapy has been described.
CASE SUMMARY: A 18 years old man presented to our hospital with a 3 months history of right intermittent epistaxis, permnanent nasal obstruction and right hearing loss. The physical exam found a right exophtalmia, swelling deformatted right hemifacia and a b

Epidermoid cysts are benign lesions, which are usually detected on the floor of the mouth in the head and neck region. They can develop from abnormal epithelial components of an ectoderm tissue during the embryological life or alternatively they can arise from the implanted epithelium after trauma or surgery. The diagnosis of an epidermoid cyst in the maxillary sinus can be challenging and it could be easily mistaken for any benign or malign lesion of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. In this case, we present a 44-year-old man with a giant epidermoid cyst in the right maxillary sinus wit…

Maxillary sinus augmentation through a lateral window is reported as one of the most predictable bone augmentation procedures before implant placement. The elevation of the membrane represents a delicate and crucial step that allows the creation of the space for the bone graft material. If the elevation is not completed, the regenerated bone might be inadequate for the implant placement. In this case, a new intervention will be necessary to complete the bone augmentation. Reaccessing from a lateral window, however, would be challenging due to thickness of the buccal boney wall because of the f…

Mucormycosis is a fulminant opportunistic infection with significant mortality in susceptible individuals. Although mortality rates vary widely (30 to 100%) according to professional literature, recently in instances with no central nervous system (CNS) involvement the survival rate averages varies between 50 and 80% owing to complex therapy. With CNS involvement, however, the fatality rate is over 80%. Predisposing diseases include diabetes mellitus, malnutrition, hematologi- cal diseases, neutropenia, burns, surgical procedures, antibiotic treatments, long-term steroid therapy and immunosupp

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity and the inter- and intra-examiner reliability of panoramic-radiograph-driven findings of different maxillary sinus anatomic variations and pathologies, which had initially been prediagnosed by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
METHODS: After pairs of two-dimensional (2D) panoramic and three-dimensional (3D) CBCT images of patients having received treatment at the outpatient department had been screened, the predefinition of 54 selected maxillary sinus conditions was initially performed on CBCT images by two blinded consultants…

BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cyst (DC) in the maxillary sinus is rarely seen. Several complications are observed after the Caldwell-Luc operation, which is combined with endoscopy. Still, a more perfect treatment method is yet to be discovered.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore and assess a new functional surgical treatment with fewer complications, which not only insured normal maxillary sinus cilia restoration and bony integrity but also did little damage to maxillary sinus natural ostium.
METHODS: Dentigerous cyst in the maxillary sinuses of 20 patients had conditions diagno…

IMPORTANCE: Silastic implants are popular for cosmetic cheek augmentation. We describe the computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in 5 cases (4 patients) with penetration of the medial aspect of Silastic cheek implants through the anterior maxillary sinus wall.
OBSERVATIONS: Three cases demonstrated associated sinus mucosal thickening, and 3 cases demonstrated infection surrounding the implant. In 3 cases, the implants migrated into the maxillary sinus, and in 1 case the implant also eroded through the nasoantral wall and extended into the nasal cavity.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours (IMT) are benign lesions that mimic malignant neoplastic processes due to their infiltrating and destructive nature. They can be found anywhere in the body, although they are most commonly located in the lung. IMTs of the head and neck region are rare entities.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a maxillary IMT with an enlarged intraoral component which was adequately treated with surgical excision without long-lasting additional corticosteroid treatment.
DISCUSSION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours can be easily misdiagnosed as malignant ne

AIM: To describe vascular anatomy of the maxillary sinus in dentate specimens dissected from human cadavers.
METHODS: Twenty dentate maxillary specimens were dissected, anatomically prepared, and injected with liquid latex for a better visualization of the maxillary sinus artery.
RESULTS: We found an intraosseous anastomosis in 100% and an extraosseous anastomosis in 90% of the cases. The anterior lateral wall of the maxillary sinus was transversed by two anastomoses between the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) and the infraorbital artery (IOA). The PSAA was divided into a gingival …

The antral septum, a commonly found anatomical variation, has been related to the occurrence of membrane perforation during sinus augmentati … l septa besides the prevalence were included. Antral septa presented in approximately 20% to 35% of maxillary sinuses. Single septum was much more common than multiple septa. Mediolaterally (transversely) oriented septa were more frequently found than anteroposteriorly (sagittally) oriented septa. Their size varies and commonly increases from the lateral to media …

In some aspects, the terminology of fibro-osseous lesions of the head remain equivocal. The WHO classification suggested to group cemento-ossifying fibroma and ossifying fibroma under the term "ossifying fibroma". Based on the different age of onset, localization and risk of recurrence, two types have been described: "juvenile ossifying fibroma", with early age of onset, which needs to be treated with wide surgical resection due to the high risk of recurrence; and "adult ossifying fibroma", arising in adult patients, with low recurrence rate, properly treated by conservative surgery. We descri

A 15-year-old Belgian gelding presented in respiratory distress, with bilateral mucopurulent nasal discharge, and right-sided epistaxis. The horse had a 5-year history of dental disease and had been recently losing weight. Radiographs indicated tooth root abscessation of the right maxillary third molar tooth and probable maxillary sinus feed impaction. These findings were confirmed at surgery and necropsy. The stippled, granular radiographic appearance described here is highly characteristic of sinus feed impaction.
