Dracunculus medinensis (Guinea worm; GW) is a parasitic nematode that causes dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease; GWD). The annual incidence of GWD in humans has been reduced by over 99.9% globally since the 1980s thanks to the implementation of complementary interventions. Dogs are now the primary hosts of GW and impede eradication efforts. The antihelmenthic drug, flubendazole (FLBZ), was suggested as a possible therapeutic intervention after it was found to be partially effective at reducing fertility of D. medinensis in experimentally infected ferrets. A 2019 clinical trial of FLBZ in Chad

An 18-year-old man came to the Emergency Room at the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (Suriname) with a solitary supra-umbilical gunshot-wound. The patient was hypovolemic, with dropping blood pressure and rising pulse, surgery was indicated. After incision of the abdominal midline 1.5 l of blood drained, immediately followed by the appearance of 2 long thin worms. During inspection of the abdominal cavity a perforation of the duodenum and sigmoid and a mesenterial bleeding was seen and treated. Inspection of the small intestine showed presence of Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm).

Resistance of helminth parasites to common anthelminthics is a problem of increasing importance. The full mechanism of resistance development is still not thoroughly elucidated. There is also limited information about helminth enzymes involved in metabolism of anthelminthics. Identification of the metabolites formed by parasitic helminths can serve to specify which enzymes take part in biotransformation of anthelminthics and may participate in resistance development. The aim of our work was to identify the metabolic pathways of the anthelminthic drugs albendazole (ABZ) and flubendazole (FLU) i

Strongyloidiasis is a potentially life-threatening condition which, when appropriately diagnosed early in its course, is easily eradicated. When severe, it may mimic other disease processes including appendicitis or severe pelvic inflammatory disease. The diagnosis of parasitic infestation should be considered in any individual who has lived in an endemic area and presents with diarrhea regardless of attendant conditions and superimposed disease processes. A minimum workup consisting of stool examination for ova and parasites should be performed on all such individuals. Thiabendazol is the tre

A patient with biliary ascariasis was observed. The diagnosis was strongly suggested on endoscopic cholangiography. X-ray examination of the small bowel confirmed intestinal infestation and the stools were positive for ascaris lumbricoides. The incidence, symptomatology, diagnostic features, complications and therapy of biliary ascariasis are briefly discussed.

The effect of flubendazole on Cysticercus cellulosae was tested in 15 pigs. In doses o 8.3 mg/kg body weight or more daily for 10 days the drug was lethal to the cysticerci, causing both macroscopic and microscopic morphological alterations. An in vitro test showed 0% viability of cysticerci in most of the treated pigs, whereas in 90-100% of 11 control pigs they were viable.

Developing co-amorphous systems is an attractive strategy to improve the dissolution rate of poorly water-soluble drugs. Various co-formers … ore the possibility of adenosine monophosphate and adenosine diphosphate used as acidic co-formers. Mebendazole, celecoxib and tadalafil were used as the model drugs. The drug-co-former co-amorphous systems were prepared via ball milling and confirmed using XRPD. The dissolution study suggested that the solubility and dissolution rate of the drug-co-formers s …

Surgical excision of echinococcal cyst has long been considered the only effective treatment for echinococcosis. However, the remarkable advances in imaging techniques, particularly ultrasound, made during the past 25 years have greatly facilitated diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. Today, chemotherapy and percutaneous treatments have become widely available. A major step forward in management of the disease came in 2001, when the WHO International Working Group on Echinococcosis (WHO-IWGE) came to a consensus by developing a standardized classification of ultrasound images in cystic echinoco

Both benzimidazoles (albendazole) and isoquineline compounds (praziquantel) have activity against. We reviewed the efficiency of benzimidazole and isoquineline in the management of hepatic Echinococcus in our clinical cases and the other laboratory and animal studies. Until recently, surgery was the only treatment of choice. Albendazole introduction and its early results were exciting. In 1985, a favorable outcome of a combination of albendazole and praziquantel was described and lately indications for pre- and postoperative prophylactic usage has been established. Both drugs in animal and lab
