Neonatal Meckel diverticulum: Obstruction due to a short mesodiverticular band.

This is the first report of symptomatic Meckel diverticulum in a newborn, in which direct compression by a short mesodiverticular band (MDB) caused intestinal obstruction. A short MDB can cause intestinal obstruction due to direct compression. There are two mechanisms by which Meckel diverticulum with MDB can cause intestinal obstruction: internal hernia and direct compression. Onset of intestinal obstruction due to direct compression by a short MDB might be earlier than that for internal hernia with long MDB.

Diagnosis and management of pediatric appendicitis, intussusception, and Meckel diverticulum.

Three of the most common causes of surgical abdominal pain in pediatric patients include appendicitis, Meckel diverticulum, and intussusception. All 3 can present with right lower quadrant pain, and can lead to significant morbidity and even mortality. Although ultrasound is the preferred method of diagnosis with appendicitis and intussusception, considerable variety exists in the modalities needed in the diagnosis of Meckel diverticulum. This article discusses the pathways to diagnosis, the modes of treatment, and the continued areas of controversy.

Massive gastrointestinal bleeding from Meckel diverticulum with ectopic pancreatic tissue.

Meckel diverticulum (MD), a congenital gastrointestinal anomaly, is often involved in pediatrics, but less in the adult population. The patient in this report was a 69-year-old female presented with massive gastrointestinal bleeding causing hemorrhagic shock due to MD containing ectopic pancreatic tissue. A review of the literature revealed that gastrointestinal bleeding from MD containing ectopic pancreatic tissue is rare in adults and difficult to be identified preoperation. MD should be considered as one of the differential diagnosis for lower gastrointestinal bleeding, although scarce in a…

Incidentally detected Meckel diverticulum: to resect or not to resect?

BACKGROUND: Management of incidentally detected Meckel diverticulum (MD) remains controversial. Our aims were to establish: (1) the prevalence of MD; (2) the morbidity and (3) mortality due to MD. METHODS: Systematic review: A total of 244 papers meeting defined criteria were included; there were no prospective or randomized studies. MD prevalence and mortality from autopsy studies, postoperative complications, and outcome of incidentally detected MD were extracted. Population-based data: Data were obtained from national databases on MD as cause of death, and on number of MD resections per ye…

[Surgical treatment of Meckel diverticulum complicated by an acute hemorrhage].

Mekkel's diverticulum (MD)--is the inborn anomaly, caused by incomplete yolk duct development, it is present in near 2% of population and in 95% of observations lacks clinical manifestations. Symptoms of the disease manifest while complications occurrence only--in presence of peptic ulcer with possible hemorrhage and perforation occurrence, while ileus, diverticulitis, hernia, umbilicus fistula and tumor development. Eight patients, suffering MD, complicated by gastrointestinal hemorrhage, were treated during 1983-2006 yrs in Kyiv's city center for giving the aid to patients suffering gastroin

CT diagnosis of Meckel diverticulum in a paracolic internal hernia.

The autopsy incidence of internal hernia has been reported to be between 0.2% and 0.9%, and these hernias are usually diagnosed on imaging due to their complications or at surgery. Meckel diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, occurring in 1% to 3% of the population according to autopsy studies. The condition also is usually diagnosed at surgery, by barium studies or scintigraphy, or on cross-sectional imaging due to complications. We present an unusual case of a large Meckel diverticulum in a right paracolic hernia diagnosed on multidetector computed…

Strangulation of small bowel due to Meckel diverticulum: CT findings.

We report an unusual case of small bowel strangulation due to long Meckel diverticulum. CT demonstration of the bundle-like segment contiguous with the distended fluid-filled loops of bowel contributed to the prompt preoperative diagnosis.

Caecal obstruction secondary to a Meckel's diverticulum.

A Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, with a population incidence of approximately 2%. They are known to cause several complications including obstruction, haemorrhage, tumours, infection, and perforation. The vast majority however are asymptomatic and therefore provide a management conundrum when discovered incidentally. We report the case of a 71-year-old female who presented with abdominal pain and bloating. She was taken for a diagnostic laparoscopy which revealed a partial caecal obstruction secondary to a fibrous band running from a

Intussusception of Meckel's Diverticulum: A Case Report.

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is a common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, present in approximately 2% of the population. While typically asymptomatic, MD can lead to complications such as obstruction and intussusception. Here, we present a case report of a man presenting with abdominal pain with an incidental finding of MD complicated by intussusception and our management approach. A 39-year-old man with a history of ulcerative colitis (UC) presented with sudden severe right iliac fossa pain, vomiting, and a background of intermittent dull abdominal pain over three months. Exami

An Unusual Case of a Perforated Meckel's Diverticulum.

BACKGROUND: Meckel's diverticulum, the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, typically presents in children with gastrointestinal bleeding. Case Presentation. An 11-year-old Caucasian male presented with a 6 week history of abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. He was found to have iron deficiency anemia, markedly elevated serum and fecal inflammatory markers, and imaging showing a contained bowel perforation. He was evaluated for infectious etiologies and later underwent extensive testing for inflammatory bowel disease. Ultimately, he was found to have a Meckel's div

An adenocarcinoma in an inverted Meckel's diverticulum with intussusception.

BACKGROUND: Adenocarcinoma in an inverted Meckel's diverticulum with intussusception has not been reported to date. We discuss the clinical issues concerning this rare condition and review the relevant literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old Japanese female was referred to our hospital for further investigation of severe anemia. Computed tomography revealed a tumorous lesion in the terminal ileum. Capsule endoscopy did not provide detailed images. Exploratory laparoscopy revealed intussusception in the terminal ileum. An intraluminal tumor 70 cm proximal to the ileocecal valve was observ

Incidental Meckel's Diverticulum in Umbilical Hernia.

The presence of a Meckel's diverticulum in the hernial sac is called a Littre's hernia. It is a rare complication of Meckel's diverticulum. We present a 56-year-old male patient who complained of swelling in the umbilical region. After the clinical examination and imaging studies, we diagnosed the patient with a partially reducible umbilical hernia. The patient underwent exploration and was found to have omentum, Meckel's diverticulum, and part of the ileum within the sac. The patient underwent segmental resection of the bowel, primary repair of the hernial defect, and onlay meshplasty. Postop

Emergency Presentations of Meckel's Diverticulum in Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Meckel's diverticulum is the commonest congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract in humans that is commonly encountered during surgical practice as the cause of the patient's presentation or as an incidental finding during other unrelated procedures. Most clinical symptoms are caused due to its complications. RESULTS: The mean age of the involved patients was 24.79 years with slight male predominance, 62.9% males compared to 37.1% females. The mean length of the diverticulum was 55.21 cm. The most common emergency presentation was right lower quadrant abdominal pain in 31

Meckel's diverticulum in an adult with iron deficiency.

Meckel's diverticulum is a true diverticulum caused by the incomplete obliteration of the vitelline duct during gestation. It is the most common congenital malformation of the gastrointestinal tract. Meckel's diverticulum is a rare presentation in adults, especially because symptomatic patients present in early childhood. We present a 57-year-old woman with symptomatic iron deficiency after recent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory use. After normal upper and lower endoscopy, a capsule endoscopy showed an oozing polyp in the distal ileum. The small bowel was surgically resected, and histopathology
