A concept-based interpretable model for the diagnosis of choroid neoplasias using multimodal data.

Diagnosing rare diseases remains a critical challenge in clinical practice, often requiring specialist expertise. Despite the promising potential of machine learning, the scarcity of data on rare diseases and the need for interpretable, reliable artificial intelligence (AI) models complicates development. This study introduces a multimodal concept-based interpretable model tailored to distinguish uveal melanoma (0.4-0.6 per million in Asians) from hemangioma and metastatic carcinoma following the clinical practice. We collected a comprehensive dataset on Asians to date on choroid neoplasm imag

Artefact mimicking torsades: treat the patient not the ECG.

ECG interpretation is an essential skill in the management of the acutely unwell patient and in addition to history taking and physical examination has been shown to have a significant effect on referral patterns to cardiologists. One of the basic initial steps in ECG interpretation is assessment for the presence of artefact which if present can dramatically influence the diagnosis. The most common sources of artefact are tremor e.g. in Parkinson’s disease, loose skin electrodes and electromagnetic interference from other medical devices and mobile phones. The Medicines and Healthcare products

Walking the talk: understanding how language barriers affect the delivery of rehabilitation services.

PURPOSE: Individuals who lack proficiency in the dominant language of their region experience difficulty accessing healthcare and exhibit poorer health outcomes. Utilization of professional interpreters can improve health services and outcomes for this population. Most existing studies focus on medical settings, with very little research about language barriers in rehabilitation services such as occupational and physical therapy. The purpose of this study was to explore experiences of English-speaking rehabilitation clinicians working with limited English proficient (LEP) patients, as well as

Medical aspects of rheumatoid arthritis. Diagnosis and treatment.

Rheumatoid arthritis commonly affects the hand and wrist. The differential diagnosis of inflammatory conditions affecting the hand is broad. A proper diagnostic approach necessitates a thoughtful interpretation of the presenting clinical features, laboratory tests, synovial fluid analysis, and radiographic data. Early, aggressive medical therapy with a combination of antiinflammatory and remittive agents may reduce mortality in selected patients and prevent the consequences of uncontrolled synovial proliferation. Despite proper medical therapy, joint destruction often results and surgical trea

Investigation of drug-related deaths. An overview.

Drug-related deaths encompass fatal overdoses, the medical derangements from chronic consumption, and violent death from the alteration of normal behavioral patterns. Determining the extent to which a drug contributed to a death necessitates correlation of all aspects of the death investigation; autopsy and toxicologic findings must be interpreted in the light of antecedent events, medical and social history, and thorough scene investigation. The approach to the medicolegal investigation of drug-related deaths is discussed along with some legal ramifications and certain potential problems of d

Evaluating Medical Biochemistry Teaching and Learning Through Simulation: A Mixed-Methods, Quasi-Experimental Study in Medical Students in Ecuador.

Biochemistry is fundamental to medical education; however, traditional teaching may limit clinical integration and long-term retention. Although clinical simulation has emerged as a strategy to promote active and contextualized learning, its effectiveness in biochemistry teaching remains limited. This study evaluated the impact of clinical simulation on cognitive knowledge, technical skills, and communication among first-semester medical students compared with traditional practical instruction. A mixed-methods, quasi-experimental design was used with 404 students from the Central University of

ClinNetDx: a novel explainable ai framework for acute lymphoblastic leukemia detection using multi-modal clinical data.

Early identification of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is vital to respond on time; yet, presently existing diagnostic procedures still depend on laboratory knowledge, manual interpretation and many supplementary exams. This paper introduces ClinNetDx, a new hybrid deep learning model for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia prediction that combines a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and a Deep Neural Network (DNN) and employs structured blood test data and (optional) medical images to support good health and well-being. The proposed methodology includes a tabular-to-spatial transformation that

A Qualitative Study of Parental Decision-Making Following a Prenatal Diagnosis of Turner Syndrome: "How Serious Is This?".

A prenatal diagnosis of Turner syndrome (TS) presents expectant parents with complex and emotionally demanding decisions under conditions of uncertainty. However, there is limited insight into how parents interpret and integrate medical information, personal experiences, and values during this process. This qualitative study explores how parents who chose to continue a pregnancy following a prenatal TS diagnosis experienced and navigated decision-making. The study was conducted within the Danish healthcare system between September 2024 and October 2025. During this period, we conducted 12 semi

Optimizing vitiligo diagnosis with ResNet and Swin transformer deep learning models: a study on performance and interpretability.

Vitiligo is a hypopigmented skin disease characterized by the loss of melanin. The progressive nature and widespread incidence of vitiligo necessitate timely and accurate detection. Usually, a single diagnostic test often falls short of providing definitive confirmation of the condition, necessitating the assessment by dermatologists who specialize in vitiligo. However, the current scarcity of such specialized medical professionals presents a significant challenge. To mitigate this issue and enhance diagnostic accuracy, it is essential to build deep learning models that can support and expedit

What can we conclude from studies on psychotherapy in bipolar disorder? Invited commentary on...Cognitive-behavioural therapy for severe and recurrent bipolar disorders.

The study by Scott et al is at odds with other published studies. Their design of a mixed group of relatively well or acutely ill bipolar patients who may or may not be on medication leads to difficulties in interpreting the results. Important clinical decisions should not be based on a post hoc analysis with a retrospective variable.

Toward an epistemic grounding of clinical reasoning: artificial intelligence and psychological diagnosis.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used to support diagnosis across medicine, yet extending its success to psychological assessment raises a distinct epistemological problem. Psychological diagnosis requires interpreting subjective experience, contextualizing clinical information, and developing explanatory hypotheses within the clinician-patient relationship. In this Perspective, we compare the inferential structure of medical and psychological diagnosis and argue that psychopathological reasoning relies especially on abduction, namely the generation and iterative revision of plausi

LUS-DET: Liver Ultrasound Open-Vocabulary Object Detection.

In liver ultrasound, the acquisition of standard scanning planes serves as a prerequisite for reliable lesion assessment. In clinical practice, physicians make diagnostic decisions by jointly interpreting the spatial configuration of key anatomical structures within standard planes and local lesion features. However, existing studies commonly treat standard plane recognition and lesion detection as two separate tasks, lacking a unified modeling approach that reflects their semantic continuity and clinical interdependence. Inspired by the diagnostic workflow of liver ultrasound, we propose LUS-

Application of genomic bioinformatic tools in clinical psychiatry and counseling.

Genomic medicine has introduced transformative tools for psychiatric practice, facilitating the diagnosis of complex cases through the identification of genetic variants. The gene encodes a key component of the histone methyltransferase complex. Mutations in this gene have been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders and schizophrenia, particularly in cases with early onset and cognitive impairment. The aim of this article is to describe the application of genomic tools and international criteria for interpreting genetic pathogenicity in psychiatric clinical practice, using as a model. Based on
