Cognitive deficits after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) are common and disabling. Patients who experience delayed deterioration associated with vasospasm are likely to have cognitive deficits, particularly problems with executive function, verbal and spatial memory. Here, we report neurophysiological and pathological mechanisms underlying behavioral deficits in a murine model of SAH. On tests of spatial memory, animals with SAH performed worse than sham animals in the first week and one month after SAH suggesting a prolonged injury. Between three and six days after experimental hemor

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have demonstrated that vitamin A and its active derivatives function as essential competence factors for long-term synaptic plasticity within the adult brain. But little is known if marginal vitamin A deficiency (MVAD) beginning from embryonic period affects the brain development and the ability of learning and memory in young rats. The aim of this study was to identify the effects of MVAD and vitamin A intervention (VAI) on learning, memory and the hippocampal CA1 long-term potentiation (LTP) in young rats.
METHODS: Rats were divided into control, MVAD and VAI gro

With the rapid development of wearable devices and intelligent sensing technologies, the demand for human behavior recognition in rehabilitation medicine and human-machine collaboration has been increasing. To address the issue of high variability in gait features caused by individual differences in cross-population gait analysis, and to tackle the insufficient generalization ability of models due to the coupling of pathological features with normal gait, we propose a multi-dimensional spatiotemporal feature-guided SG-LSTM framework, based on a dual-branch architecture comprising symmetric LST

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Early identification of carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) is critical for preventing cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. Mainstream screening methods (e.g. ultrasound, CTA) are operator-dependent and high cost. This study aimed to propose a novel non-contact facial imaging photoplethysmography (iPPG) approach for CAS risk assessment.
METHODS: A total of 95 middle-aged and elderly participants were enrolled, with synchronous facial iPPG signals and carotid/lower-extremity ultrasound data collected. A deep learning-based Period-aware Autoencoder (PA-AE) with bidirectional cro

Gait analysis is an essential tool in clinical domains for diagnosing musculoskeletal disorders and evaluating rehabilitation, yet traditional marker-based systems are limited by high costs and spatial constraints. To overcome these challenges, this study proposes and evaluates a joint-level hybrid framework that integrates a single RGB camera with two shoe-mounted inertial measurement units (IMUs) to leverage their complementary strengths. The camera-based module estimates hip and knee sagittal joint angles using 3D pose estimation, where the DEAS optimization algorithm aligns estimated coord

Recent studies show the relevance of using sEMG signals and extracted features in powered prosthesis control. However, amputation technique determines the availability of residual muscles, and minimizing sensor number is to be preferred. Therefore, (i) limiting the total number of sEMG muscle inputs, (ii) minimizing the inputs from the lower leg muscles, and (iii) completely excluding the lower leg muscles will make the control algorithm economical, flexible, and practical, respectively. Using healthy population data, the aim was to conduct a systematic analysis for ranking possible muscle com

Health recommender systems (HRSs) enhance prognostication by leveraging clinical information. Existing HRSs often fail to capture the intrinsic correlations between patient phenotypes with similar clinical profiles, necessitating approaches that incorporate patient similarity into prognostic modeling. This work explores such correlations within three classes of biomedical information: diagnosis, procedure, and medication, and the clinical temporality during patient visits to improve diagnostic accuracy. Our approaches include both static and dynamic scenarios. In the static scenario, we propos

Purpose: Traditional wheelchair controls often limit independence and pose safety risks for motor-impaired users. To address these challenges, this study explores the potential of EEG-based control systems that allow users to operate powered wheelchairs through brain signals rather than physical movements. Materials and Methods: We developed a hybrid deep learning model that integrates Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and 1D-Convolutional Neural Networks (1D-CNN) with skip connections to capture both temporal and spatial EEG signal features. The model was trained and evaluated on a public EEG dat

Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II α (CaMKIIα) and nitric oxide (NO) both play vital roles in learning and memory; however, the underlying mechanisms connecting them have remained elusive. To address this question, our study surprisingly observed that during learning and memory tasks, S-nitrosation of CaMKIIα, a key redox-based post-translational modification, significantly increased in mouse hippocampus. We then constructed mice with mutations in the major S-nitrosation sites of CaMKIIα (C280/289V) and found that the mutant mice exhibited remarkable cognitive impairments and attenuat

OBJECTIVE: Memory impairment is common in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy and seriously affects life quality. Chronic stress is a recognized cofactor in epilepsy and can also impair memory function. Furthermore, increased cortisol levels have been reported in epilepsy patients. Animal models have suggested that aggravating effects of stress on memory and synaptic plasticity were mediated via glucocorticoids. The aim of this study was, therefore, to investigate the effect of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) modulation on synaptic plasticity in the human cortex of epilepsy patients.

Some multiplication facts share common digits with other, previously learned facts, and as a result, different problems are associated with different levels of interference. The detrimental effect of interference in arithmetic facts knowledge has been recently highlighted in behavioral studies, in children as well as in adults, both in typical and atypical development. The present study investigated the brain regions involved in the interference effect when solving multiplication problems. Twenty healthy adults carried out a multiplication task in an MRI scanner. The event-related design compr

H2 histamine receptors are localized postsynaptically in the CNS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of acute (1 day) and prolonged (7 day) administration of the H2 histamine receptor antagonist, famotidine, on the anticonvulsant activity of conventional antiepileptic drugs (AEDs; valproate, carbamazepine, diphenylhydantoin and phenobarbital) against maximal electroshock (MES)-induced seizures in mice. In addition, the effects of these drugs alone or in combination with famotidine were studied on motor performance and long-term memory. The influence of H2 receptor antagonist on

The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) kinase is a critical regulator of mRNA translation and is known to be involved in various long lasting forms of synaptic and behavioural plasticity. However, information concerning the temporal pattern of mTOR activation and susceptibility to pharmacological intervention during both consolidation and reconsolidation of long-term memory (LTM) remains scant. Male C57BL/6 mice were injected systemically with rapamycin at various time points following conditioning or retrieval in an auditory fear conditioning paradigm, and compared to vehicle (and/or anisom

Fear memory may undergo a process after memory reactivation called reconsolidation. To examine the roles of ephrinA4 in fear memory reconsolidation an inhibitory ephrinA4 mimetic peptide (pep-ephrinA4), that targets the EphA binding site and inhibits EphA activation, was used. Pep-ephrinA4 was microinjected into the lateral amygdala (LA) of fear-conditioned rats 24 h after training and 30 min before tone CS memory retrieval. Memory retrieval was unaffected by pep-ephrinA4. However, the animals were impaired in fear memory tested 1 h or 24 h afterward when compared to controls. Fear-conditioned

Chronic cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection leads to long-term maintenance of extraordinarily large CMV-specific T cell populations. The magnitude of this so-called 'memory inflation' is thought to mainly depend on antigenic stimulation during the chronic phase of infection. However, by mapping the long-term development of CD8+ T cell families derived from single naive precursors, we find that fate decisions made during the acute phase of murine CMV infection can alter the level of memory inflation by more than 1,000-fold. Counterintuitively, a T cell family's capacity for memory inflation is not

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to test the hypothesis that patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with subjective initial memory complaints (not confirmed by an objective standard assessment) and various phenotypes also show objective very long-term memory deficit with accelerated long-term forgetting. We tested patients with TLE with 2 surprise memory tests after 3 weeks: the standard Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) and Epireal, a new test specifically designed to capture more ecologic aspects of autobiographical memory.

The participation of DNA methylation processes in the mechanisms of anterograde and retrograde amnesia caused by impaired reconsolidation of conditioned food aversion memory by NMDA glutamate receptor antagonists or serotonin receptor antagonists, respectively, were studied on grape snails. Anterograde amnesia was characterized by impaired formation of long-term memory during repeated learning. Administration of a DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) inhibitor to amnestic animals resulted in accelerated formation of long-term memory during 1 day of repetitive training vs 3 days during initial training

Potassium channels regulate many neuronal functions, including neuronal excitability and synaptic plasticity, contributing, by these means, to mnemonic processes. In particular, A-type K(+) currents (IA) play a key role in hippocampal synaptic plasticity. Therefore, we evaluated the effect of the peptidic toxin Tx3-1, a selective blocker of IA currents, extracted from the venom of the spider Phoneutria nigriventer, on memory of mice. Administration of Tx3-1 (i.c.v., 300 pmol/site) enhanced both short- and long-term memory consolidation of mice tested in the novel object recognition task. In co
