Craniopharyngioma with midbrain involvement.

An adult patient had a cranlopharyngloma that involved and displaced the midportion of the midbrain, producing Weber's syndrome. Oculomotor paresis in cranlopharyngloma is not always due to parasellar involvement but may be due to midbrain involvement.

Alcohol intake in the rat after lowering brain 5-hydroxtryptamine content by electrolytic midbrain raphé lesions, 5, 6-dihydroxytryptamine or p-chlorophenylalanine.

Voluntary alcohol consumption was measured in male albino rats after selectively lowering their brain 5-hydroxytryptamine concentration (an AA strain of rats was used, selectively outbred for its high alcohol consumption). The brain 5-hydroxytryptamine concentration was reduced using three different techniques: electrocoagulation of the dorsal and median raphé nuclei of the midbrain; injection of 75 mug of 5,6-dihydroxytryptamine into the lateral cerebral ventricle; and oral administration of 300 mg/kg/day p-chlorophenylalanine as a 0.5 per cent carboxymethylcellulose suspension, for 12 days.

Acute, but not repeated, cocaine exposure alters allopregnanolone levels in the midbrain of male and female rats.

RATIONALE: Multiple psychiatric disorders are associated with altered brain and serum levels of neuroactive steroids, including the endogenous GABAergic steroid, allopregnanolone. Clinically, chronic cocaine use was correlated with decreased levels of pregnenolone. Preclinically, the effect of acute cocaine on allopregnanolone levels in rodents has had mixed results, showing an increase or no change in allopregnanolone levels in some brain regions. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that cocaine acutely increases allopregnanolone levels, but repeated cocaine exposure decreases allopregnanolone levels

Immune-related neurodegeneration in the midbrain causes pulmonary dysfunction in murine cryptococcal IRIS.

Cryptococcal immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (C-IRIS) is a condition that affects immunosuppressed individuals recruited to antiretroviral therapy. In a recent publication, Kawano and colleagues used a mouse model to demonstrate that pulmonary dysfunction, one of the fatal complications of C-IRIS, is caused by T cell-driven neurodegeneration in a vital medullary nucleus of the brain responsible for respiratory control.

Age-dependent aggregation of α-synuclein in the nervous system of gut-brain axis is associated with caspase-1 activation.

α-Synuclein (α-Syn) plays a key role in the development of Parkinson' desease (PD). As aging is acknowledged to be the greatest risk factor for PD, here we investigated α-Syn expression in the ileum, thoracic spinal cord, and midbrain of young (1-month-old), middle-aged (6-, 12-month-old) to old (18-month-old) mice. We demonstrated that both the levels of α-Syn monomers, oligomers and ratios of oligomers to monomers were increased with aging in the ileum, thoracic spinal cord, and midbrain. Whereas, the expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate-limiting enzyme for dopamine synthesis, w

Post-stroke palatal tremor as a clinical predictor of dysphagia and its neuroanatomical correlates in patients with midbrain and pontine lesions.

The precise associations between dysphagia and palatal tremor (PT) remain unknown. We aimed to identify the association between PT and dysphagia among patients with midbrain/pontine stroke, compare the characteristics of dysphagia between patients with PT (PT + dysphagia) and without PT (PT- dysphagia), and verify neuroanatomical predictors of PT + dysphagia in this patient population. This retrospective observational study enrolled 40 patients (34 males, 6 females; mean age: 95% confidence interval [CI], 56.6 ± 14.6 years) with first-ever midbrain or pontine stroke exhibiting brain stem lesio

Comparison of operation of spinal locomotor networks activated by supraspinal commands and by epidural stimulation of the spinal cord in cats.

KEY POINTS: Epidural electrical stimulation (ES) of the spinal cord restores/improves locomotion in patients. ES-evoked locomotor movements differ to some extent from the normal ones. Operation of the locomotor network during ES is unknown. We compared the activity of individual spinal neurons during locomotion initiated by signals from the brainstem and by ES. We demonstrated that the spinal network generating locomotion under each of the two conditions is formed by the same neurons. A part of this network operates similarly under the two conditions, suggesting that it is essential for genera

Eye movements and association with regional brain atrophy in clinical subtypes of progressive supranuclear palsy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate oculomotor impairment in subtypes of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and its associations with clinical features and regional brain volumes in PSP. METHODS: We compared the video-oculography (VOG) findings of 123 PSP patients, consisting of 66 PSP-Richardson syndrome (PSP-RS), 28 PSP-parkinsonism (PSP-P), and 29 PSP-progressive gait freezing (PSP-PGF), along with 80 Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. We also investigated the associations of the VOG results with clinical features (disease duration, PSP rating scales [PSPRS] scores for dysphagia and postural stabi

Dysregulation of Decision Making Related to Metabotropic Glutamate 5, but Not Midbrain D3, Receptor Availability Following Cocaine Self-administration in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive patterns of drug use are thought to be the consequence of drug-induced adaptations in the neural mechanisms that enable behavior to be flexible. Neuroimaging studies have found evidence of robust alterations in glutamate and dopamine receptors within brain regions that are known to be critical for decision-making processes in cocaine-dependent individuals, and these changes have been argued to be the consequence of persistent drug use. The causal relationships among drug-induced alterations, cocaine taking, and maladaptive decision-making processes, however, are difficul

An Anatomic Characterization of the Midbrain Near Response Neurons in the Macaque Monkey.

PURPOSE: These experiments were designed to reveal the location of the premotor neurons that have previously been designated physiologically as the midbrain near response cells controlling vergence, lens accommodation, and pupillary constriction in response to target distance. METHODS: To identify this population, the fixed N2c strain of rabies virus was injected into the ciliary body of seven Macaca fascicularis monkeys. The virus was trans-synaptically transported to the brain. Following a 58- to 76-hour survival, animals were perfused with formalin fixative. After frozen sectioning, tissue
