BACKGROUND: Micronutrient concentrations in patient cohorts with acute severe (Type 2) intestinal failure have not yet been described. The literature mostly consists of studies of metabolically stable patients with chronic, Type 3, Intestinal Failure. We aimed to characterise micronutrient abnormalities at the point of admission in adults with new Type 2 Intestinal Failure and assess the effects of inflammation on micronutrient concentrations.
METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was undertaken at a national intestinal failure reference centre. Adults admitted with new Type 2 Intest

BACKGROUND: During and after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) surge, a notable increase in mucormycosis was observed, particularly among individuals with metabolic and treatment-related vulnerabilities. Emerging evidence suggests that micronutrient disturbances may also influence susceptibility. This study evaluated clinical predictors and micronutrient patterns associated with mucormycosis in post-COVID-19 patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted at a tertiary care center, including 139 post-COVID-19 patients who underwent testing for Vitamin B

Dietary factors may influence cognitive aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD), but observational associations, mechanistic findings, and intervention effects should not be considered equivalent evidence. This critical narrative review examines how dietary patterns, micronutrient adequacy, and metabolic health may modify AD-related vulnerability. A targeted search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science through April 2026 prioritized systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomized trials, and prospective cohorts. Micronutrient uptake is impaired after pancreatico-duodenectomy (PD) because of malabsorption, reduced absorptive capacity, and poor oral intake. Biochemical depletion is reported in cohort studies, but deficiency states are predominantly reported in case reports, making it difficult to assess occurrence rates. Although national guidelines recommend monitoring of micronutrients, there are no guidelines on what this should consist of. We undertook a narrative review to explore the incidence of deficiency and make recommendations for clinical management using data from randomized controlled tria…

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a significant mental health condition characterized by alternating episodes of mania and depression, impacting millions worldwide. Genetic factors are known to play a major role in BD, but the influence of circulating micronutrient levels remains unclear. Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) and multiple MR were used to assess the impact of 15 circulating micronutrients, including copper, selenium, zinc, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, carotene, folate, and vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, and E on BD risk. Genetic data were sourced from Genome-Wide Association Studi…

We present the case of a 19-year-old female who initially exhibited unilateral orbital symptoms and laboratory evidence of autoimmune thyroid involvement, consistent with a diagnosis of euthyroid Graves' orbitopathy (GO). She responded well to immunosuppressive therapy and remained clinically stable for two years. Subsequently, she developed fatigue, menstrual irregularities, and mild recurrent eye discomfort. Laboratory evaluation revealed biochemically severe hypothyroidism with elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), low free thyroxine (FT4), and persistently high thyroid peroxidase ant

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Micronutrient deficiency (MND) (ie, lack of vitamins and minerals) during pregnancy is a major public health concern. Historically, studies have considered micronutrients in isolation; however, MNDs rarely occur alone. The impact of co-occurring MNDs on public health, mainly in shaping mucosal colonization by pathobionts from the Enterobacteriaceae family, remains undetermined due to lack of relevant animal models.
METHODS: To establish a maternal murine model of multiple MND (MMND), we customized a diet deficient in vitamins (A, B12, and B9) and minerals (iron and zinc) th…

Optimal maternal nutrition, including adequate intake and status of essential micronutrients, is important for the health of women and developing infants. Currently, the World Health Organization (WHO) Antenatal care recommendations for a positive pregnancy experience recommend daily iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation as the standard of care. The use of multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) is recommended in the context of rigorous research as more evidence was needed regarding the impact of switching from IFA supplements to MMS, including evaluation of critical clinical maternal and…

INTRODUCTION: Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic immune-mediated disorder triggered by gluten ingestion in genetically predisposed individuals. Historically, CD was primarily recognized and described as a disease of the Caucasian population. Data from a national survey in 2015 revealed that 0.79% of the population was formally diagnosed with celiac disease, with the non-Hispanic white population having a prevalence of 4-8 times higher than other underrepresented races. Although there is evidence that CD affects minorities at higher than reported rates, there is little data on its effects on mino

Elevated homocysteine (Hcy) levels (≥15 μmol/L) in the elderly are frequently associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline. Several studies have already shown an Hcy-lowering effect of B vitamin supplementation in cohorts deficient in these nutrients. The aim of this randomized, double-blinded 12-week intervention study was to investigate whether Hcy levels in healthy elderly subjects (75.4±4.5 years, n=133) could be lowered with a micronutrient supplement (i.e., 400 μg folic acid, 100 μg cobalamin). Difference in mean initial Hcy levels between intervention (1

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: One of the pathogenetic hypotheses of delirium is the "neuroinflammatory theory" with consequent neurotoxicity of brain connectivity networks. Micronutrients may play a significant role in the prevention of neuroinflammation. This systematic review addresses the role of micronutrients in the development of delirium in older populations.
METHODS: The EBSCO, Cochrane, PubMed, and Web of Science databases were searched for articles on delirium and micronutrients. The methodological quality of the studies included in the review was evaluated with the Newcastle-Ottawa Sc…

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is the leading cause of chronic intestinal failure. The duration of parenteral support (PS) and the long-term micronutrient needs in children with SBS vary, based on their clinical and anatomical characteristics. Our study aimed to review the clinical course and identify high risk patient groups for prolonged PS and long-term micronutrient supplementation.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on electronic medical records of children with SBS and chronic intestinal failure who were enrolled in the multidisciplinary intestinal rehabilitati

BACKGROUND: The anti-Müllerian-hormone (AMH) is secreted by the granulosa cells of the oocytes and can be used as a marker of the ovarian reserve; helpful to estimate female fertility or the menopause onset. Although various factors may influence AMH levels, the correlation with nutritional factors needs more research.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of a micronutrient supplementation on female AMH levels.
METHODS: This retrospective analysis includes a total of 244 women, who attended the Karl Landsteiner Institute, Korneuburg, Austria from January 2013 to June 2019 due to an unfulfilled

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cardiovascular damage could begin early in life. Our aim was to examine the current state of the art related to micronutrient supplementation on vascular health in obese and overweight children. We considered only the studies performed over the past few years.
RECENT FINDINGS: Vitamin D supplementation in the obese pediatric population with vitamin D deficiency could improve the vascular health of these subjects. The evidence is less clear on supplementation with other micronutrients. Zinc supplementation is currently the most supported by the literature.
SUMMARY: As of to…
