Nailfold videocapillaroscopy in patients with deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2 (DADA2): a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2 (DADA2) is a rare monogenic autoinflammatory disease mainly characterized by the presence of systemic inflammation and vascular manifestations such as vasculitis and early-onset stroke. Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) can occur in up to 22% of DADA2 patients. The aim of this work was to investigate the microvascular status of DADA2 patients by the mean of nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) comparing them with adequate healthy controls (HC) and primary RP patients. FINDINGS: NVC data of 9 DADA2 patients (mean age 18 ± 6 y) followed at the Children Gasl

Microvascular Changes in the Retina Correlate with MRI Markers in Patients with Early-Onset Dementia.

Background and Aims: Recent reports suggest that results from imaging retinal microvascular changes with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in dementia patients reflect cerebral microcirculation changes that occur during dementia. Macula microvascular impairment has been shown in dementia patients compared to controls, but very little is known about its correlation with radiological visual rating scores associated with dementia. We aimed to explore the association between retinal microvasculature and radiological visual rating in early-onset dementia (EOD) patients. Methods: Swept

Nailfold Capillaroscopy as a Biomarker in the Evaluation of Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

BACKGROUND: Noninvasive screening and disease monitoring are an unmet need in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Nailfold capillaroscopy (NFC) is a validated technique for microvascular surveillance in rheumatologic diseases. NFC uses magnified photography to examine nail bed capillaries called end row loops (ERL). We aimed to identify variations in NFC in pediatric IBD patients and their associations with disease activity. METHODS: Pediatric patients with Crohn's disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC) and healthy controls were recruited. NFC was performed on patients with newly dia

Nailfold Capillary Morphology as a Potential Biomarker of Cardiovascular or Metabolic Risk in Children Aged 3-17 Years Prenatally Exposed to Alcohol.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence indicates that individuals with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) may be at risk for cardiometabolic dysfunction. Nailfold capillaroscopy (NFC) is a noninvasive method for visualizing microvascular dysfunction, which often precedes clinical disease. In this study, we examined whether children and adolescents with confirmed PAE differed in nailfold capillary morphology from unexposed peers. METHODS: We used a cross-sectional design to compare nailfold capillary morphology in children and adolescents aged 3-17 years with confirmed PAE versus no or minimal PAE, enroll

Associations between retinal microvasculature and cognition in middle-aged adults with type 1 diabetes without overt neurological symptoms.

AIMS: Type 1 diabetes is a risk factor for retinal microvascular pathology, cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD), and cognitive deficits. In older individuals with type 1 diabetes, decreased vessel densities of superficial (SCP) and deep (DCP) retinal capillary plexuses have been associated with cognitive impairment. We assessed whether these associations are already evident in midlife among individuals without overt neurological symptoms. We also investigated whether cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) and white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), manifestations of cSVD, modify these associations. METHO
