A nonparametric dependent competing risk method for net survival analysis.

Quantifying disease-specific survival in patients with competing risks is generally done when reliable cause of death (CoD) information is available. With known CoD, cause-specific and cumulative incidence functions for competing risk data are applicable in estimating disease-specific survival. When CoD is unreliable, unknown, or subject to misspecifications, relative survival methods are used for estimating disease-specific survival. This estimator, under the independent competing risks assumption, is the ratio of all-cause survival in the disease-specific cohort group to the known expected s

Optimal subsampling methods for large clustered imbalanced data based on generalized estimating equations.

Generalized estimating equations (GEEs) are widely used for modeling clustered data while accounting for within-cluster correlations. However, fitting GEEs on massive datasets can be computationally prohibitive. Subsampling offers a practical solution, but efficient subsampling strategies for large clustered data, particularly with rare events, remain underexplored. Simple random subsampling can lead to a substantial loss of rare-event information, resulting in inefficient estimation, computational instability, and increased finite-sample bias. Additionally, intra-cluster correlation complicat

Influence Analyses of "Designs" for Evaluating Inconsistency in Network Meta-Analysis.

Network meta-analysis is an evidence synthesis method for comparing the effectiveness of multiple available treatments. To justify evidence synthesis, consistency is an important assumption; however, existing methods founded on statistical testing can be substantially limited in statistical power or have several drawbacks when handling multi-arm studies. Moreover, inconsistency can be theoretically explained as design-by-treatment interactions, and the primary purpose of such analyses is to prioritize the further investigation of specific "designs" to explore sources of bias and other issues t

Testing Risk Difference of Two Proportions for Combined Unilateral and Bilateral Data.

In clinical studies with paired organs, binary outcomes often exhibit intra-subject correlation and may include a mixture of unilateral and bilateral observations. Under Donner's constant correlation model, we develop three likelihood-based test statistics (the likelihood ratio, Wald-type, and score tests) for assessing the risk difference between two proportions. Simulation studies demonstrate good control of type I error and comparable power among the three tests, with the score test showing slightly more favorable performance, particularly for moderate to large sample sizes, supporting its

A contaminated regression model for count health data.

In medical and health research, investigators are often interested in countable quantities such as hospital length of stay (e.g., in days) or the number of doctor visits. Poisson regression is commonly used to model such count data, but this approach can't accommodate overdispersion-when the variance exceeds the mean. To address this issue, the negative binomial (NB) distribution (NB-D) and, by extension, NB regression provide a well-documented alternative. However, real-data applications present additional challenges that must be considered. Two such challenges are (i) the presence of (mild)

Bonferroni's method, not Tukey's, should be used to control the total number of false positives when making multiple pairwise comparisons in experiments with few replicates.

Statistical tests can be used to help determine whether experimental manipulations produce effects. In tests of means, when more than two groups are compared the total number of Type 1 errors (false positive results) increases unless a correction is used. Tukey's method is thought to offer good control of the number of false positives and high statistical power when all pairwise comparisons are made. However, the number of replicates in laboratory experiments is often quite low, and small sample sizes can undermine assumptions underlying statistical methods. I used simulations to investigate h

Ruling out Latent Time-Varying Confounders in Two-Variable Multi-Wave Studies.

There has been considerable interest in estimating causal cross-lagged effects in two-variable, multi-wave designs. However, there does not currently exist a strategy for ruling out unmeasured time-varying covariates that may act as confounders. In this paper, we propose a new strategy for testing whether an unmeasured time-varying covariate explains all covariation between the two "causal" variables in the data. That model, called the Latent Time-Varying Covariate (LTVC) model, can be tested with observations for two variables assessed across three or more measurement waves. If the LTVC model

Defining estimand for the win ratio: Separate the true effect from censoring.

The win ratio has been increasingly used in trials with hierarchical composite endpoints. While the outcomes involved and the rule for their comparisons vary with the application, there is invariably little attention to the estimand of the resulting statistic, causing difficulties in interpretation and cross-trial comparison. We make the case for articulating the estimand as a first step to win ratio analysis and establish that the root cause for its elusiveness is its intrinsic dependency on the time frame of comparison, which, if left unspecified, is set haphazardly by trial-specific censori

Metric Transformations and the Filtered Monotonic Polynomial Item Response Model.

The [Formula: see text] metric in item response theory is often not the most useful metric for score reporting or interpretation. In this paper, I demonstrate that the filtered monotonic polynomial (FMP) item response model, a recently proposed nonparametric item response model (Liang & Browne in J Educ Behav Stat 40:5-34, 2015), can be used to specify item response models on metrics other than the [Formula: see text] metric. Specifically, I demonstrate that any item response function (IRF) defined within the FMP framework can be re-expressed as another FMP IRF by taking monotonic transformati

Structural validity of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fifth Edition: Confirmatory factor analyses with the 16 primary and secondary subtests.

The factor structure of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fifth Edition (WISC-V; Wechsler, 2014a) standardization sample (N = 2,200) was examined using confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) with maximum likelihood estimation for all reported models from the WISC-V Technical and Interpretation Manual (Wechsler, 2014b). Additionally, alternative bifactor models were examined and variance estimates and model-based reliability estimates (ω coefficients) were provided. Results from analyses of the 16 primary and secondary WISC-V subtests found that all higher-order CFA models with 5 group f

Customized charts and their role in identifying pregnancies at risk because of fetal growth restriction.

Customized growth charts reduce complexity in antenatal care for the expectant mother and her clinicians by improving the distinction between physiological and pathological variation in fetal size. Their application in large databases has improved our understanding of the importance of intrauterine growth restriction and its antenatal recognition. Their implementation into clinical practice, together with the appropriate training and referral protocols, has been shown to reduce the risk of stillbirth.

A taxometric analysis of actual Internet sports gambling behavior.

This article presents findings from the first taxometric study of actual gambling behavior to determine whether we can represent the characteristics of extreme gambling as qualitatively distinct (i.e., taxonic) or as a point along a dimension. We analyzed the bets made during a 24-month study period by the 4,595 most involved gamblers among a cohort of 48,114 people using an Internet service to gamble on sporting events. We applied two taxometric procedures (i.e., MAMBAC and MAXCOV) to three indicators of betting behavior: total money lost, total number of bets, and total money wagered. The re

Large trials vs meta-analysis of smaller trials: how do their results compare?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results of large clinical trials vs the pooled results of smaller trials. DATA IDENTIFICATION: Meta-analyses with at least 1 "large" study were identified from the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Database and from MEDLINE (1966-1995). STUDY SELECTION: We used a sample size approach to select 79 meta-analyses with at least 1 large study of 1000 or more patients. We used a statistical power approach to select 61 meta-analyses with at least 1 large study based on statistical power considerations. DATA EXTRACTION: The outcome of interest for each meta-analysis was t

Statistical methods for analyzing change over time of continuous outcomes in observational health studies: a scoping review of suggested approaches.

BACKGROUND: Analyses of within-person change in continuous outcomes are widely used in longitudinal observational health research. However, modeling change presents challenges, particularly regarding questions about when adjustment for baseline outcome values is indicated and how to deal with regression to the mean (RTM) and measurement error (ME). Despite extensive methodological debate, it remains unclear how these issues are addressed in applied studies and what analytical strategies have been proposed to mitigate related biases. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of methodological stu

Nonparametric estimation of average effects of a continuous treatment for survival data with a cured fraction.

Estimating the causal effect of a continuous treatment on survival data, particularly in cases where there is a cured fraction from observational studies, is a significant issue. However, this topic is not well addressed in the existing literature. Current methods either rely on strong parametric assumptions or struggle to effectively control for confounding variables. In this study, we propose a novel nonparametric estimation method that utilizes a weighted generalized Kaplan-Meier survival estimator. This method aims to estimate the average effects of a continuous treatment on both the proba

Optimal Control of Directional False Discovery Rates in Large-Scale Testing.

The high-throughput biomedical technology enables measurement of thousands of gene expression levels contemporaneously. A major task in analyzing these gene expression data is to identify both over-expressed and under-expressed genes. The popular two-group models select the non-null genes without further classifying them as overexpression or underexpression. Consequently, two-group decision rules are unable to constrain the numbers of falsely discovered over-expressed or under-expressed genes respectively. We propose a general three-group model that allows dependence between the test statistic

The correlation between baseline score and post-intervention score, and its implications for statistical analysis.

BACKGROUND: When using a continuous outcome measure in a randomised controlled trial (RCT), the baseline score should be measured in addition to the post-intervention score, and it should be analysed using the appropriate statistical analysis. METHODS: We derive the correlation between the change score and baseline score and show that there is always a correlation (usually negative) between the change score and baseline score. We discuss the following correlations and provide the mathematical derivations in the Appendix: Correlation between change score and baseline score Correlation between

gsem: A Stata command for parametric joint modelling of longitudinal and accelerated failure time models.

BACKGROUND: The number of studies using joint modelling of longitudinal and survival data have increased in the past two decades, but analytical techniques and software shortcomings have remained. A joint model is often used for analysis of a combination of longitudinal sub-model and survival sub-model using shared random effects. Cox regression commonly referring to the survival sub-model, should not be used when proportional hazards assumptions are not satisfied. In such cases, the parametric survival model is preferable. METHODS: We describe different parametric survival models for surviva

A mathematical framework for probabilistic choice based on information theory and psychophysics.

Risky decision-making (e.g. reward dependency) has been associated with substance abuse, psychopathy and pathological gambling; conversely, marked sensitivity to risk and uncertainty have been observed in anxiety disorder patients. In economic decision theory, probability and uncertainty have been dissociated. Frank Knight defined uncertainty as loss of information on the probability distribution of outcomes for choices (i.e., unpredictability), which is referred to as Knightian uncertainty (also as ambiguity). However, even when the probability distribution of outcomes is known, there are dif
