Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) presents in rare instances with focal or multifocal upper limb involvement. We revi … l variant of CIDP begins with upper extremity sensorimotor symptoms, simulates isolated or multiple mononeuropathies, can be distinguished from MMN, and may have a less favorable response to treatment.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic mononeuropathies, which are focal neuropathies, are less common than peripheral neuropathy in diabetes. They are frequently underreported or misdiagnosed due to mild or unnoticed cases. Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent worsening nerve damage and complications.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to compare the effectiveness of conventional treatment with vitamin therapy for improving these neuropathies.
METHODS: Fifty cases of diabetic ocular nerve palsy were stratified into two groups, 25 in each. Group A received steroids, while group B received vitamin B12…

Transthyretin (TTR) gene has a causal role in a hereditary form of amyloidosis (ATTRm) and is potentially involved in the risk of wild-type … ausing mutation Val122Ile (rs76992529) with respect to carpal tunnel syndrome (p = 6.41 × 10-6) and mononeuropathies of upper limbs (p = 1.22 × 10-5). Sex differences were also observed in line with ATTRm and ATTRwt epidemiology. Additionally, we explored possible modifier genes related to TTR function, observing convergent associations of RBP4 variants with the c …

OBJECTIVE: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) represents one of the most prevalent peripheral entrapment mononeuropathies. The purpose of our study was to assess the potential correlation between intraneural hypervascularization, flexor retinaculum bowing, and median nerve cross-sectional area and the severity of CTS in cases confirmed by nerve conduction study.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Sixty consecutive patients with classic or probable symptoms of CTS were enrolled in the study. A control group consisting of 27 healthy volunteers who were never diagnosed with CTS or had any symptoms of CTS was recru…

OBJECTIVES: Functional reorganization in the somatosensory network after peripheral nerve lesions has been suspected to modify the clinical expression of symptoms. However, no conclusive evidence exists to support this notion. We addressed this question by investigating the topographic distribution of the subjective sensory report in various chronic human mononeuropathies.
METHODS: We report the clinical results of 86 patients who were diagnosed with meralgia paresthetica, 86 patients with ulnar neuropathy at the elbow, and 203 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.
RESULTS: In the carpal tun…

Disorders known to be caused by molecular and cytogenetic abnormalities of the proximal short arm of chromosome 17 include Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A), hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP), Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS), and mental retardation and congenital anomalies associated with partial duplication of 17p. We identified a patient with multifocal mononeuropathies and mild distal neuropathy, growth hormone deficiency, and mild mental retardation who was found to have a duplication of the SMS region of 17p11.2 and a deletion of the peripheral myelin …

A 45-year-old man presented with an isolated sciatic mononeuropathy, which then evolved into a lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy. His initial symptoms included lower limb pain, sensory disturbance and later weakness, without autonomic dysfunction. Neurophysiology suggested a postganglionic neuropathy. MR and ultrasound scans of the thighs showed right sciatic nerve thickening, and CSF analysis showed albuminocytological dissociation. Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) was unremarkable. He then developed orthostatic symptoms and urinary disturbance, and was found to h

We present the case of a 67-year-old man in good health with perirenal hematoma due to a ruptured arterial aneurysm in the kidney. The patient developed weight loss, muscle weakness, multiple mononeuropathy, hypertension, anemia, renal insufficiency, and multiple lacuna infarctions about a month ago. He was admitted to the hospital due to worsening of his symptom. After admission, severe right-flank pain suddenly occurred; he was then transferred to our hospital. Renal angiography revealed bilateral multiple microaneurysms, and the patient was diagnosed with polyarteritis nodosa based on the c

Neurologic disorders, mainly Guillain-Barré syndrome and Parsonage–Turner syndrome (PTS), have been described in patients with hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in industrialized and developing countries. We report a wider range of neurologic disorders in nonimmunocompromised patients with acute HEV infection. Data from 15 French immunocompetent patients with acute HEV infection and neurologic disorders were retrospectively recorded from January 2006 through June 2013. The disorders could be divided into 4 main entities: mononeuritis multiplex, PTS, meningoradiculitis, and acute demyelinating

Notalgia paresthetica refers to an isolated mononeuropathy involving chronic localized itch or paresthesia most often at the skin of the scapula or surrounding regions. There are no specific skin manifestations except those arising from chronic scratching and rubbing. The specific etiology remains unknown; however, it has been theorized that the neuropathic itch is caused by sensory nerve entrapment involving the posterior rami of the T2 to T6 nerve root. The entrapment is due to degenerative changes in the vertebrae. We report here a particular case of notalgia paresthetica in a 55-year-old w

Peripheral neuropathy occurs as a component of several common and rare diseases. It is heterogeneous in cause, diverse in pathology, and varied in severity. The term peripheral neuropathy includes symmetric polyneuropathy, single and multiple mononeuropathy, and radiculopathy. The major disorders include diabetic neuropathy, alcoholic neuropathy, and carpal tunnel syndrome. The incidence of cancer chemotherapy-induced neuropathy has been increasing substantially. Although the estimated prevalence of all different peripheral neuropathies is considerably high, possibly affecting 10% of the entir

Dengue infection is a leading cause of illness and death in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Forty percent of the world's population currently lives in these areas. The clinical picture resulting from dengue infection can range from relatively minor to catastrophic hemorrhagic fever. Recently, reports have increased of neurological manifestations. Neuropathogenesis seems to be related to direct nervous system viral invasion, autoimmune reaction, metabolic and hemorrhagic disturbance. Neurological manifestations include encephalitis, encephalopathy, meningitis, Guillain-Barré synd

OBJECTIVES: To describe the range of neuromuscular disorders which may be associated with cryptic coeliac disease.
METHODS: Nine patients were described with neuromuscular disorders associated with circulating antigliadin antibodies, whose duodenal biopsies later confirmed the diagnosis of coeliac disease. Neurological symptoms antedated the diagnosis of coeliac disease in all, and most had minimal or no gastrointestinal symptoms at the onset of the neuromuscular disorder.
RESULTS: Three patients had sensorimotor axonal peripheral neuropathy, one had axonal motor peripheral neuropathy, one h

A retrospective study was conducted to identify the syndromic, topographic and etiological diagnoses made for a group of 209 patients with peripheral neuropathies. Anamnesis and clinical-neurological examination were of fundamental importance for the syndromic and topographic diagnoses. Electromyography played an important role, especially with respect to the topographic diagnoses. The etiological diagnoses depended on additional complementary tests such as: blood glucose levels and blood glucose tolerance test; nutritional evaluation; family evaluation; nerve, skin, pharynx and maxillary sinu

OBJECTIVES: Post-burn neuropathy is a little-known pathology. However, the nerve is the most sensitive organ to burns, especially electrical burns. Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common mononeuropathy worldwide and the most common post-burn neuropathy. The aim of this study is to evaluate, through a review of the literature, the specificities of the management of mononeuropathy of the median nerve at the wrist occurring at a distance from the burn injury.
METHODS: A comprehensive search of the literature was conducted using the Cochrane Library, PubMed, and EMBASE. We included all article

INTRODUCTION: Electric shocks may have neurological consequences for the victims. Although the literature on the neurological consequences of electric shocks is limited by retrospective designs, case studies and studies of selected patient groups, previous research provides some evidence of a link between electric shocks, and diseases and symptoms of the central nervous system (CNS)(e.g. epilepsy, migraine and vertigo) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS)(e.g. loss of sensation, neuropathy and muscle weakness). This study aims to employ a register-based, matched cohort study, to investigate

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), also known as Churg Strauss syndrome, is an uncommon vasculitis associated with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA). The hallmarks of the disease are asthma, eosinophilia, and systemic vasculitis with varying degrees of neurological, cutaneous, cardiac, gastrointestinal, and renal involvement. Diagnosis is often difficult since the symptoms are diverse, and a number of differentials need to be excluded.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we describe a 60-year-old patient who presented with mononeuritis multiplex and a pa
